Magnanimous Musings of Fr. John Robert Skeldon
March 24th, Tuesday this year, marks the 35th anniversary of the
assassination and martyrdom of Archbishop Oscar Romero of San
Salvador, El Salvador. His martyrdom was just promulgated by Pope
Francis last month. He truly died as a martyr, expressed in the Latin term
in odium fidei (in hatred of the faith…that is others saw his practice of the faith and hated it and him). His
beatification has been scheduled for May 23rd in San Salvador.
The soon-to-be Blessed Oscar Romero was in the process of celebrating mass at the chapel of a hospital when he was murdered by an assassin’s bullet. The following is some of the text of his homily up to
the point where he is killed as the mortal shot rang out:
“You have just heard in Christ’s gospel that one must not love oneself so much as to avoid getting
involved in the risks of life that history demands of us, and that those who try to fend off the danger will
lose their lives, while those who out of love for Christ give themselves to the service of others, will live,
live like the grain of wheat that dies, but only apparently. If it did not die, it would remain alone. The harvest comes about only because it dies, allowing itself to be sacrificed in the earth and destroyed. Only by
undoing itself does it produce the harvest....
“This is the hope that inspires us as Christians. We know that every effort to better society, especially when justice and sin are so ingrained, is an effort that God blesses, that God wants, that God demands of us.... Of course, we must try to purify these ideals, Christianize them, clothe them with the hope
of what lies beyond. That makes them stronger, because it gives us the assurance that all that we cultivate
on earth, if we nourish it with Christian hope, will never be a failure. We will find it in a purer form in that
kingdom where our merit will be found in the labor that we have done here on earth....
“Dear brothers and sisters, let us all view these matters at this historic moment with that hope, that
spirit of giving and of sacrifice. Let us all do what we can. We can all do something, at least have a sense of
understanding and sympathy....
“[I]t is worthwhile to labor, because all those longings for justice, peace, and well-being that we
experience on earth become realized for us if we enlighten them with Christian hope. We know that no one
can go on forever, but those who have put into their work a sense of very great faith, of love of God, of
hope among human beings, find it all results in the splendors of a crown that is the sure reward of those
who labor thus, cultivating truth, justice, love, and goodness on earth. Such labor does not remain here below but, purified by God’s Spirit, is harvested for our reward.
“The holy Mass, now, this Eucharist, is just such an act of faith. To Christian faith at this moment
the voice of diatribe appears changed for the body of the Lord, who offered himself for the redemption of
the world, and in this chalice the wine is transformed into the blood that was the price of salvation. May
this body immolated and this blood sacrificed for humans nourish us also, so that we may give our body
and our blood to suffering and to pain --- like Christ, not for self, but to bring about justice and peace for
our people.
“Let us join together, then, intimately in faith and hope at this moment of prayer....”
It is at this point that Archbishop Romero is mortally wounded. He died minutes later. The gospel
for the day was the same one for this 5th Sunday of Lent: “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless the grain of
wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.
Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life.
Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor
whoever serves me.”
A martyr’s death, a death like unto Jesus. What more can be said?

Reflexión Magnánima de Padre John Robert Skeldon
El martes 24 de marzo de este año, se cumple el 35 aniversario del asesinato
y martirio del Arzobispo Oscar Romero de San Salvador, El Salvador. Su
martirio fue recientemente promulgado por el Papa Francisco el mes pasado.
El verdaderamente murió como un mártir, expresado en el término latino en
odium fidei (por odio a la fe… es decir que otros vieron y odiaron como el
practicaba su fe y a el también). Su beatificación ha sido programada para el 23 de mayo en San Salvador.
Quien pronto será San Oscar Romero estaba celebrando misa en la capilla de un hospital cuando fue asesinado por la bala de un asesino. Lo siguiente es parte del texto de la homilía, hasta el momento en que él muere
al sonido mortal del disparo:
"Usted acaba de escuchar en el evangelio de Cristo, que no hay que amarse a sí mismo tanto, como para evitar verse involucrado en los riesgos de la vida que la historia exige de nosotros, y que aquellos que tratan de
defenderse del peligro perderán sus vidas, mientras que los que por amor a Cristo se entregan al servicio de
los demás, van a vivir, vivir como el grano de trigo que muere, pero sólo en apariencia. Si no muere, se quedaría solo. La cosecha se produce sólo porque se muere, destruyéndose, dejándose sacrificar en la tierra. Sólo
al deshacerse a sí mismo se produce la cosecha....
"Esta es la esperanza que nos inspira como cristianos. Sabemos que todos los esfuerzos son para mejorar la
sociedad, especialmente cuando la justicia y el pecado están tan arraigados, es un esfuerzo que Dios bendice,
que Dios quiere, que Dios exige de nosotros.... Por supuesto, hay que tratar de purificar estos ideales, cristianizarlos, vestirlos con la esperanza de lo que hay más allá. Eso los hace más fuertes, porque nos dan la seguridad de que todo lo que cultivamos en la tierra, si lo alimentamos con la esperanza cristiana, nunca será un
fracaso. Lo encontraremos en una forma más pura en ese reino donde nuestro mérito se encuentra en el trabajo que hemos hecho aquí en la tierra....
"Queridos hermanos y hermanas, veamos estas cuestiones en este momento histórico con esa esperanza, ese
espíritu de entrega y sacrificio. Vamos todos a hacer lo que podamos. Todos podemos hacer algo, por lo menos tener un sentimiento de comprensión y compasión....
“Vale la pena el trabajo, porque todos esos anhelos de justicia, paz y el bienestar que experimentamos en la
tierra se convierten en una realidad para nosotros si nos iluminamos con la esperanza cristiana. Sabemos que
nadie es eterno, pero los que han puesto en su trabajo un sentido de gran fe, de amor de Dios, de esperanza
entre los seres humanos, encuentran el resultado en los esplendores de una corona que es la segura recompensa de los que trabajan, en el cultivo de la verdad, la justicia, el amor y la bondad en la tierra. Ese trabajo no se
queda aquí abajo, sino que, purificado por el Espíritu de Dios, es cosechado para nuestra recompensa.
"La Santa Misa, hoy, esta Eucaristía, es justamente un acto de gran fe. Para la fe cristiana en este momento la
voz de la diatriba (injuria) se presenta cambiada por el cuerpo del Señor, que se ofreció a sí mismo por la redención del mundo, y en este cáliz el vino se transforma en la sangre que era el precio de la salvación. Que
este cuerpo inmolado y esta sangre sacrificada por los seres humanos también nos nutra, para que podamos
dar nuestro cuerpo y nuestra sangre al sufrimiento y al dolor --- como Cristo, no para sí, sino para lograr la
justicia y la paz para nuestro pueblo.
"Unámonos, pues, íntimamente en la fe y la esperanza en este momento de oración....”
Es en este momento que el Arzobispo Romero está herido de muerte. Él murió minutos después. El evangelio
del día fue el mismo que el de este quinto domingo de Cuaresma: "En verdad, en verdad os digo, que si el
grano de trigo no cae en tierra y muere, permanece solo un grano de trigo; pero si muere, da mucho fruto. El
que ama su vida la pierde, y el que aborrece su vida en este mundo, la conservará para la vida eterna. Si alguno me sirve, que me siga, y donde yo esté, allí estará también mi servidor. El Padre le honrará el que me
sirve”.
La muerte de un mártir, una muerte semejante a Jesús. ¿Qué más se puede decir?

The CLP is an integrated course leading into

CCD EARLY REGISTRATION
On Sundays, March 22nd and 29th there
will be CCD registration for next year after all Sunday Masses in the Great Hall.
All children in grades K thru 5th(will be in
sixth grade in the fall) can register. Families must be registered in the church in
order to enroll in CCD classes. The cost for CCD classes is
$35 per child and $35 per sacrament per child.
INSCRIPCIONES TEMPRANAS PARA EL CATECISMO (CCD) Los domingos 22 y 29 de marzo

Sacrament of Baptism (newborns - age 6): Parents requesting the Sacrament of Baptism should be either living within parish boundaries or be registered in the parish. Parents and godparents are expected to attend a baptism class for an infant to be baptized. Parents are required to bring a signed photocopy of the child’s state-registered birth certificate to the baptism class. Godparents who are not registered at St. Bartholomew must provide a letter from their parish which verifies that they meet the godparent
requirements. All paperwork must be turned into the office before scheduling your child’s baptism date. The next class will be 7 p.m.
on Thursday, April 9th in the church hall. Call the office to sign up for this class. Parents also need to call the office if you need to
use the nursery while attending this class. For more information, call Art and Cecilia Villa, 817-292-3897. The next English Baptism
ceremony will be Saturday, May 2nd at 10 a.m. in the church for those who have attended the class.
Sacramento del Bautismo (Recién nacidos hasta 6 años): Los padres que soliciten el bautismo deben vivir dentro de los

Peter Flynn Retirement Party This Sunday
We have been blessed as a parish and as a Diocese that
one of our own St. Bartholomew parishioners has served
the Church in many significant roles for 30 years. Peter
Flynn, CFO and Vice Chancellor of Administrative Services for the Diocese and President of the Advancement
Foundation, has retired.
There will be a very special Retirement Celebration on
Sunday, March 22, from 2-4 p.m. at the Catholic Center and you are all invited.

Peter is well known to all of us in the Diocese and we
want to express our deepest gratitude for his devoted and
sustained service as well as his leadership, friendship and
erudite knowledge. Thirty years is a long time and he has

St. Andrew Happy Hearts senior group is sponsoring a one day
bus trip to the Kiowa Casino. The trip is planned for March
24th. We leave St. Andrew at 8:00 AM and arrive back at the
church about 7:30 PM. The bus is free and all riders get 10.00

Men’s Retreat, Spring 2015
The ACTS Retreat is an experience you owe to yourself and your
family. It’s a unique program that provides opportunities for each
retreatant to form deeper relationships with their families and our
Lord through Adoration and daily prayers; through Community
with others from our parish; through Theology and study of our
Christian faith; and through Service to our family, our church, and
each other.
ACTS is primarily a parish-based retreat for St. Bartholomew Catholic Church. There will be 40+ men as retreatants, and while most
will be Catholic, it is definitely not a requirement to be Catholic to
attend. All are welcome and encouraged to attend . For questions,
