SAINT PATRICK and SAINT JOSEPH
St. Patrick is one of the world’s most popular saints. His feast day, March
17, has taken on many secular features, such as parties and parades due to
the influence and political power of Irish Americans after their
immigration during the 19th century. He is their patron.
Much of what we know of St. Patrick comes from his own writings,
especially from his Confession. He was born to wealthy Roman citizens
living in Scotland around 385. In his teens, he was kidnapped by Pirates
and sold as a slave in Ireland. He worked there as a shepherd for about 6
years when he escaped and eventually reunited with his family.
While in captivity, he learned the language and practices of the Irish
people. He also experienced a spiritual awakening and had dreams that
were divinely inspired. He turned to God and prayed.
After his escape, he continued to have dreams and one was about the
people in Ireland calling out to him to come and walk among them again.
He began his studies for the priesthood under St. Germanus. Later Patrick
was ordained a Bishop, and was sent to take the Gospel to Ireland. He
arrived there in March 433. He ministered there for over thirty years,
baptizing thousands and establishing parishes and religious communities.
His efforts were resisted in an organized way by the Druids, pagan
religious leaders and sorcerers among the Celts. Through his miracles, he
gradually undermined the power of the Druids among the people and
converted them. After his death in 461, his disciples completed the
conversion of the Irish people.
St. Joseph is the husband of Mary and the foster father of Jesus. His
solemnity is celebrated on March 19th. There is very little known about
St. Joseph. What we know comes from Scripture, which says very little
of him. Scripture does not record even one word said by Joseph, and yet,
even without words, the depth of his faith is shown.
We know he was a carpenter, a working man, as the Nazarenes ask about
Jesus, “Is this not the carpenter’s son?” (Matthew 13:55)
We know he was a compassionate, caring man as when he found Mary to
be pregnant; he decided to divorce her quietly so that she would not be
stoned to death for committing adultery.
We know that he was a man of faith and that he respected God, as he did
whatever God asked of him, without knowing the outcome. His faith and
obedience was shown through marrying Mary, naming Jesus, shepherding
Mary and Jesus to Egypt for their protection, bringing them to Nazareth
and leaving behind all of his possessions, going to Jerusalem for Jesus’
circumcision and Mary’s purification, and celebrating the Passover in
Jerusalem every year. Since Joseph does not appear in Jesus’ public life,
at his death, or resurrection, it is believed that he probably died in 27
A.D., before Jesus entered His public ministry.

Let us rejoice in the Lord!
Today is Laetare Sunday, so called because the entrance antiphon begins with
the word "Rejoice" (Laetare). It is a respite in this time of penance. We see that
the priest and deacon wear a different color at Mass today. In some parishes,
flowers adorn the altar.
So what is the reason for this joy? Our opening prayer provides an important
clue. We pray to God who through His Word reconcile humankind to Himself in
a wonderful way. God, throughout salvation history, has reached out in mercy to save his people,
continually summoning us to return to him.
In today's Gospel, Jesus reminds us of the acts of mercy during the stay of the Israelites in the
desert. When Israel cried out to God to give them something, God commanded Moses to make a
serpent (which he did, in bronze) and mounted it on a pole (Numbers 21). This precursor of the
cross of Jesus was a means of healing for those who were to die.
So many times, -as the Israelites did-, we mounted in rebellion, and want to turn away from God,
to keep our wicked ways…this is the perfect recipe for disaster. In our young lives we believe that
trusting more in our friends will get us more from them than our parents, in our mature age, the
distractions of the world make our hearts lead to disorderly passions, and false gods. We welcome
the advice from retirement counselors and brokers, but we forget about the meaning of the Word
within us. The One who allowed God’s people to return home and rebuild their temple, is giving
us again an opportunity to be with Him.
The most “wonderful way” in which God reconciles is set forth in both the second reading and
today’s Gospel. Paul, in the reading from Ephesians, describes God as “rich in mercy.” God’s
“great love” is manifested in his bringing us to life “when we were dead in our transgressions.”
The evangelist John expresses this mystery more simply: “God so loved the world that he gave his
only Son.” God holds nothing back, not even his beloved Son, in order to extend his
compassionate hand to us, to bring us back to life, to restore our relationship with him and with
one another. It is because God is so forbearing, magnanimous, and compassionate that we have
reason to rejoice — not only this Laetare Sunday, but every day!
We will return to the Gospel of John on Holy Thursday, when we will hear that “Jesus loved his
own and loved them to the end” (John 13), following the humble act he washed the feet of his
disciples. Sisters and brothers, this is the same love of Jesus we are invited to give today. Thank
you for answering the call, and participating in the Walk of Hope, of Catholic Charities led by our
team Captain, the boy Jose Rivas. Thanks also to those who provide food for the poor under the
program of "the Mount Carmel Guild"; or to those who give their time and talents to serve in one
way or another in many ministries, associations, or services needed in the Church!

St. Joseph, husband of the Virgin
Mary and foster father of Jesus. He is
known as the patron of the Universal
Church. During this month, let us turn to him with
some sign of devotion, love and veneration. A Solemn
Mass will be celebrated at Saint Joachim Church at
7:00PM (Trilingual), with the traditional blessing and
distribution of bread. A collection in support of the
Walk of Hope of the Catholic Center will be taken up
at the Mass. The OLA Children Choir will be singing
at this Mass. Sweet Table will follow in Centennial
Hall.

IL SIGNIFICATO DEL NOSTRO
SOLLEVATO DAL MESSIA
La settimana scorsa, quando Gesu’ si
riferi’ alla distruzione del Tempio, il
resoconto dalla prima lettura di oggi
e’quello che sarebbe venuto in mente ai suoi
ascoltatori. Ma, come Gesu’parlava ad un livello
piu’ profondo, cosi’ e’ la prima lettura di oggi. Nel
primo paragrafo sentiamo che Israele era, infatti,
”caduto” a causa della sua infedelta’ all’Alleanza.
Per evitare di diventare troppo comodi, questo
resoconto ci ricorda che Dio, per quanto giusto,
amoroso, e misericordioso, e’ capace di punire il
peccato quando il peccato e’ impenitente. Ma
siamo anche rammentati che Dio, ricco in
misericordia, consacra individui ad essere portatori
di salvezza nello stesso tempo (In ebraico, il re
Ciro di Persia e’ chiamato “messia”). Nella lettura
del Vangelo, udiamo di un altro Messia che e’
“sollevato” per la nostra salvezza in uno dei piu’
conosciuti brani del Nuovo Testamento. Come la
Quaresima si conclude ed entriamo nella
Settimana Santa, dobbiamo mantenere lo sguardo
diritto sulla croce di Cristo, il Figlio di Dio che
venne nel mondo per sollevare noi che eravamo
caduti.

2015. Blessed palms will be distributed at
each weekend Mass in remembrance of Jesus’
triumphal entrance into Jerusalem. Masses follow the
Regular Weekend Schedule. The Liturgy will begin
at the gathering area at SJC or the Main plaza at ICC,
weather permitting where palms will be blessed and
carried in procession.

READING OF THE DAY
RAISED UP BY THE MESSIAH
Last week, when Jesus
referred to the destruction of the
temple, the account from today’s
first reading is what would have
come to the minds of his listeners.
But, as Jesus was speaking on a deeper level, so
does today’s first reading. In the first paragraph
we hear that Israel had, in effect, “fallen” already
through its infidelity to the covenant. Lest we get
too cozy, this account reminds us that God,
though just, loving, and merciful, is capable of
punishing sin when that sin is unrepentant. But we
are also reminded that God, rich in mercy, anoints
individuals to be vessels of salvation as well (in
Hebrew, King Cyrus of Persia is called
“messiah”). In the Gospel reading, we hear of
another Messiah being “lifted up” for our
salvation in one of the best-known passages from
the New Testament. As Lent concludes and we
enter Holy Week, we need to keep our gaze
steadfast upon the cross of Christ, the Son of God
who came into the world to raise us who had
fallen.

God pardons and raises up those who have been
unfaithful, those who have loved the darkness
rather than the light. For God so loved the world
that he sent his only Son to deliver the world from

¡Alégrate en el Señor!
Hoy la Iglesia llama a este domingo “Laetare”, pues la antífona de entrada
comienza con la palabra "Alégrate" (Laetare) como queriendo ofrecer un respiro
en este tiempo de penitencia. El sacerdote y el diácono llevan un color diferente
en la Misa. En algunas parroquias, flores adornan el altar.
¿Cuál es el motivo de dicha alegría? La oración inicial nos da una buena pista
para ello: “Oramos a Dios quien a través de su Palabra quiere reconciliar a la
humanidad consigo mismo de una manera maravillosa”. Las lecturas dan testimonio cómo de
varias maneras Dios, a través de la historia de la salvación, ha obrado su misericordia
continuamente en su pueblo, invitándonos a que volvamos a Él.
Dios a través del signo de la serpiente elevada en el desierto (Num 21,4), presenta un prototipo de
lo que será el levantamiento redentor de su Hijo en la Cruz. La sanación que nos da Jesús nos
libra de las nuevas mordidas que vienen del demonio, de las tentaciones que nos hacen caer, de la
maldad que nos esclaviza. El nuevo árbol de la Cruz, derrota el poder incluso de nuestro enemigo
¡la MUERTE!
El seguir en los malos caminos, no nos va a conducir a nada bueno. Hoy debemos pensar más en
las cosas bellas y alegres que podemos conquistar. ¿Cómo puedo lograr una mejor preparación
para mi escuela, mi estudio o mi trabajo? ¿Hay algo que debo cambiar en mí para lograr mi
cercanía a mi familia o para no impedir su cercanía a mí? ¿Cómo puedo considerarme una
persona dadivosa, cuando solo retengo y no pienso más que en mis propios intereses?
La “manera maravillosa” en la que Dios reconcilia se ve en la lectura de Efesios, cuando Dios
describe su “Gran amor” manifestado al traernos a la vida, y luego como lo dirá el evangelista
Juan “estando nosotros muertos en pecados.”: “Tanto amó Dios al mundo que dio a su Hijo
unigénito.” Dios no retiene ni guarda nada, el solo da, porque en su Amor generoso está la
identidad misma de su persona. Por eso tenemos razones grandes para alegrarnos, pues su acción
salvífica se sigue sintiendo también en la mano generosa de los ángeles que encontramos en
nuestro camino y en la palabra y atenta escucha de quien nos consuela; en la Iglesia donde
domingo tras domingo nos seguimos nutriendo unos a otros de esa fuerza especial del Espíritu.
Al Evangelio de Juan volveremos el Jueves Santo, donde escucharemos que “tanto amó a los
suyos, que los amó hasta el extremo” (Juan 13). Luego seguirá el acto de lavar humildemente los
pies a sus discípulos. Ese amor de Jesús hermanas y hermanos es el mismo, que estamos
invitados a donar hoy. Gracias por responder al llamado para participar en la Caminata de la
Esperanza, guiados por el Capitán de nuestro equipo el niño José Rivas. Hoy usted tendrá la
oportunidad de dar su aporte para ésta causa. Gracias igualmente a los que brindan alimento a los
pobres bajo el programa del “Monte
Carmelo”, ¡gracias a los que dan su
tiempo para servir de una u otra manera
en los tantos ministerios, asociaciones, o
necesidades de la Iglesia! Como ven, son
muchas las razones para estar agradecidos, por eso nuestros corazones se regocijan en alegría. Si

SOLEMNIDAD DE SAN JOSÉ
El mes de marzo está dedicado a San
José, esposo de la Virgen María y padre
adoptivo de Jesús. San José es conocido
como Patrono de la Iglesia Universal.
Durante este mes honrémoslo con algún signo de
devoción, amor y veneración. El jueves 19 de marzo
una Misa Solemne (trilingüe), será celebrada en la
Iglesia San Joaquín a las 7:00PM con la tradicional
bendición y distribución de panes y recepción a
continuación en el Salón Parroquial. Se tomará una
colecta en respaldo de la Caminata de la Esperanza
de Caridades Católicas. El Coro de Niños de la
parroquia cantará en esta misa. Todos son
bienvenidos.

El Retiro de Confirmación se llevará a cabo el viernes

LECTURA DEL DÍA
LEVANTADOS POR EL MESÍAS
La semana pasada, cuando Jesús se
refería a la destrucción del Templo, el
relato de la primera lectura de hoy es lo
que les hubiera venido a la mente a sus oyentes. Pero,
dado que Jesús estaba hablando en un sentido más
profundo, así también debemos entender la primera
lectura de hoy. Escuchamos en el primer párrafo que
Israel en efecto ya había “caído” a causa de sus
infidelidades contra la alianza. Para no ponernos
demasiado cómodos, este relato nos recuerda que Dios,
aunque justo, amoroso y misericordioso, es capaz de
castigar el pecado cuando es un pecado no arrepentido.
Pero también nos recuerda que Dios, rico en
misericordia, unge a individuos para que sean a su vez
instrumentos de salvación (en hebreo al Rey Ciro de
Persia se le denomina “mesías”). En la lectura del
Evangelio, escuchamos de otro Mesías que debe ser
“levantado” por nuestra salvación, en uno de los pasajes
más conocidos del Nuevo Testamento. Al terminar la
Cuaresma y entrar en la Semana Santa, debemos
mantener nuestra mirada fija en la cruz de Cristo, el Hijo
de Dios que vino al mundo para levantarnos a todos los
que habíamos caído.

SAN PATRICIO Y SAN JOSÉ
San Patricio es uno de los santos más populares del mundo.
Su festividad es el 17 de marzo, ha asumido muchas funciones
seculares, como fiestas y desfiles debido a la influencia y el
poder político de los americanos-irlandeses después de su
inmigración durante el siglo 19. Él es su patrono.
Mucho de lo que sabemos de St. Patrick proviene de sus
propios escritos, especialmente de su confesión. Él nació en
una familia de ricos ciudadanos romanos que vivían en
Escocia alrededor del año 385. En su adolescencia, fue
secuestrado por piratas y vendido como esclavo en Irlanda.
Allí trabajó como pastor durante unos 6 años, hasta que
escapó y, finalmente se reunió con su familia.
Durante su cautiverio, aprendió el idioma y las prácticas de
los irlandeses. También experimentó un despertar espiritual y
tuvo sueños que fueron inspirados divinamente, por eso se
acercó a Dios y oró.
Después de escapar, siguió teniendo sueños y uno de esos
sueños fue acerca de la gente de Irlanda que lo llamaba para
caminar entre ellos. Comenzó sus estudios para el sacerdocio
en San Germán. Más tarde, Patrick fue ordenado obispo, y fue
enviado a llevar el Evangelio a Irlanda. Llegó allí en marzo de
433. Realizo su ministerio allí por más de treinta años,
bautizando miles de personas y estableciendo parroquias y
comunidades religiosas.
Sus esfuerzos fueron resistidos en forma organizada por los
druidas, los líderes religiosos paganos y hechiceros entre los
celtas. A través de sus milagros, gradualmente le quitó poder
a los druidas entre el pueblo y los convirtió. Después de su
muerte en el año 461, sus discípulos completaron la
conversión de los irlandeses.
San José es el esposo de María y padre adoptivo de Jesús. Su
solemnidad se celebra el 19 de marzo. Se sabe muy poco
acerca de San José ya que lo que sabemos proviene de las
Escrituras. En ellas no se registra ni una palabra dicha por
José, sin embargo, aún sin palabras, la profundidad de su fe se
muestra.
Sabemos que era un carpintero, un hombre de trabajo, ya que
los nazarenos preguntaban a Jesús: "¿No es éste el hijo del
carpintero?" (Mateo 13:55)
Sabemos que era un hombre compasivo, cariñoso como
cuando encontró a María que estaba embarazada, decidió
divorciarse en secreto para que ella no fuera apedreada hasta
morir por cometer adulterio.
Sabemos que era un hombre de fe y que respetaba a Dios, por
eso hizo lo que Dios le pedía, sin saber el resultado. Su fe y
obediencia se muestra a través de su casamiento con María,
dándole un nombre a Jesús, y sacando a María y a Jesús de
Egipto para su protección, y llevándolos a Nazaret, dejando
atrás todas sus posesiones, a Jerusalén para la circuncisión de
Jesús y la purificación de María, y celebrando la Pascua en
Jerusalén cada año. Puesto que José no aparece en la vida
pública de Jesús, en su muerte, o la resurrección, se cree que
probablemente murió en el 27 DC, antes de que Jesús entrara
en su ministerio público.

for a slot. To allow each and everyone to participate,
please choose only ONE (1) of the available masses
