Steve March 15, 2015 Page 2 Liturgy Corner MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS FOR LENT 2015 “Make your hearts firm” (Jas 5:8) “If one member suffers, all suffer together” (1 Cor 12:26) The Church The love of God breaks through that fatal withdrawal into ourselves which is indifference. The church offers us this love of God by her teaching and especially by her witness. But we can only bear witness to what we ourselves have experienced. Christians are those who let God clothe them with goodness and mercy, with Christ, so as to become, like Christ, servants of God and others. This is clearly seen in the liturgy of Holy Thursday, with its rite of the washing of feet. Peter did not want Jesus to wash his feet, but he came to realize that Jesus does not wish to be just an example of how we should wash one another’s feet. Only those who have first allowed Jesus to wash their own feet can then offer this service to others. Only they have “a part” with him (Jn 13:8) and thus can serve others. Lent is a favorable time for letting Christ serve us so that we in turn may become more like him. This happens whenever we hear the word of God and receive the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. There we become what we receive: the Body of Christ. In this body there is no room for the indifference which so often seems to possess our hearts. For whoever is of Christ, belongs to one body, and in him we cannot be indifferent to one another. “If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy” (1 Cor 12:26) The Church is the communio sanctorum not only because of her saints, but also because she is a communion in holy things: the love of God revealed to us in Christ and all his gifts. Among these gifts there is also the response of those who let themselves be touched by this love. In this communion of saints, in this sharing in holy things, no one possesses anything alone, but shares everything with others. And since we are united in God, we can do something for those who are far distant; those whom we could never reach on our own, because with them and for them, we ask God that all of us may be open to his plan of salvation. Pope FRANCIS March 15, 2015 Worship Please remember that the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. Readings for the Week Our next HOLY HOUR will be on THURSDAY, MARCH 19th, from 7:00 PM until 8:00 PM in the church. All are welcome! Second Reading: Hebrew 5:7-9 The passage from Hebrews reminds us that Jesus was obedient to his Father in order to save us. The reflection question for this week is: Jesus is the light that drives away the shadows in our hearts. WHAT SHADOWY AREAS IN ME HAS CHRIST’S LIGHT BEEN SHINING INTO THIS LENT? There will be a COMMUNAL CELEBRATION of PENANCE on TUESDAY, MARCH 31st, at 7:30 PM in the church. “A bright sadness is the true message and gift of Lent. Little by little we begin to understand, or rather to feel, that the sadness of Lent is indeed ‘bright,’ that a mysterious transformation is about to take place in us. It is as if we were reaching to a place to which the noises and the fuss of life, of the street, of all that usually fills our days and even nights, have no access -- a place where they have no power. All that which seemed so tremendously important to us as to fill our mind, that state of anxiety, which has virtually become our second March 15, 2015 nature, disappear somewhere and we begin to feel free, light, and happy. It is not the noisy and superficial happiness which comes and goes twenty times a day and is so fragile and so fugitive; it is a deep happiness which comes not from a single and particular reason but from our soul having, in words of Dostoyevsky, touched ‘another world.’ And that which it has touched is made up of light and peace and joy, of an inexpressible trust.” (Alexander Schmemann) “Why should we Christians feel joyful today? In the first place, this Sunday is a festival of spring. At least it was so in the early church. In olden times the first roses were brought to church for a blessing on this Sunday. (In Mediterranean lands spring comes much earlier.) Christians of former times lived much closer to nature than we do. When after the cold of winter spring comes to our land like a smiling youth, when in the fields, God begins the miracle of multiplying bread, when God spreads a great table from which all creatures, from the lowest to the highest, can eat their fill, when God lifts the white pall of winter from the earth and restores life in abundance to plants and animals -- then Christians have cause to experience heartfelt joy, for they have presentiment that Paradise is not far away.” (Pius Parch) “We pray for these, your servants, who have opened their ears and hearts to your word. Grant that they may grasp your moment of grace. Do not let their minds be troubled or their lives tied to earthly desires. Do not let them remain estranged from the hope of your promises or enslaved by a spirit of unbelief. Rather, let them believe in you, whom the Father has established as universal Lord and to whom he has subjected all things. Let them submit themselves to the Spirit of grace, so that, with hope in their calling, they may join the priestly people and share in the abundant joy of the new Jerusalem, where you live and reign forever and ever.” (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Thank you to all who participated in the Parish Mission. I appreciate Fr. Steve’s invitation to preach the mission and his hospitality. Thank you very much for your support of my ministry. May you all continue to have a grace – filled Lent and have a joy – filled Easter. Fr. Andy O’Reilly, C.PP.S. Community Life Dear Friends, Today we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Lent. It is also known as Laetare Sunday. It is a day to rejoice. This is a day of radiant joy for the great feast of Easter is quickly approaching! The readings this weekend proclaim the slow development of our understanding of salvation. The first reading this weekend comes from 2 Chronicles. It sums up so much of the Old Testament’s understanding of God: God gives the people good things, the people turn away from God, God punishes them and then they are saved again by their forgiving and loving God. It happens time and time again in the Old Testament. That’s the outline for the first reading today from 2 Chronicles. The people’s sense of salvation at this time is elementary. God is the author of the good, but the people sin, rejecting God and therefore the people suffer the necessary consequences of their actions. Again Page 5 and again, God comes to save them to their original blessing and all hope that these beloved people have learned their lesson. Paul goes much further than Chronicles as he reflects on the gift of salvation. Whereas Chronicles saw salvation largely in physical and geographic terms, Paul sees salvation as the intimate experience of knowing the love of God and what it entails. For Paul the description of salvation can be summed up in the phrase, “in Christ.” In Christ we are to participate in the unity of the Holy Spirit, manifesting the glory of God in our world. Paul proclaims that in Christ we are brought to life, raised beyond our mortality, and we share in the power of Christ to overcome evil. We are not only saved, but we are called to continue the work of salvation. Paul underlines this by saying that we are God’s “handiwork.” For Paul we are God’s work of art, filled with grace to carry on the good works that God has in mind. In the gospel of John the conversation of Jesus and Nicodemus deepens this theme. Jesus proclaims his vocation to Nicodemus: God’s love for the world could not be fully expressed by anything less than the Incarnation. Jesus describes himself as the one who is sent to give flesh to God’s great love. God does not come to judge, but rather to offer the life that is salvation. The gospel goes on to speak about the cross. In John’s gospel, the cross was Jesus’ hour of glory. Yet, John proclaims that it is not his glory alone. We can, too, share in his freedom and life if only we believe. But this belief is more than assenting to dogmas. It means that we bet our lives on the belief that Christ lifted up has overcome every evil and that we have nothing, absolutely nothing to fear. That doesn’t mean that we will not suffer, but in the end God’s love is stronger than death. This love is always available to us. To know this is to know that salvation changes everything. This understanding of salvation leads us to be God’s handiwork, continuing Christ’s mission in our world. March 15, 2015 Page 6 So let us truly rejoice on this day, rejoice in the gift of salvation! CaringHands Corner The woman called the CaringHands Prayer Chain in desperate need of our prayers. It was a call for help. She was scared and in pain. It was difficult to understand her as the stroke took away her speech. Listening attentively and asking God to help say the right words to her she was assured of the many prayers that were about to surround her with. In her panic all she could do was reach out to us. It was enough. By the time the phone call ended, her anxiety and fears had diminished. Now it was up to us. Calls went out and prayers followed. Time passed and we were updated with her slow progress. The road to recovery is long and can be exhausting. One must have faith to recover from any form of disability. It can’t be done alone. This is where we come in to intervene with our love and our prayers. We can walk the journey with them asking God to surround them with his healing mercy and love. Many months later our sister in Christ called again, her fear gone and the speech had returned to normal. You could feel her tears of JOY as she told her story. Her faith through our prayers sustained her. She reached out to us and we took her hand. She still has some hurdles and we will continue to pray for her, but we know that God has her in the Palm of his hand. This is not a story, it is a true journey in the life of our ministry. As you read this today (I hope you are), may you feel the impact it had not only on her life, but also on her family and on our life of prayer and reflection. Open up your heart. If you have not signed up to become a part of CaringHands Prayer Chain Ministry now is the time to do so. Make it a part of your Lenten Journey. Please pray for our sick and homebound along with you. They can’t make it on their own. We are their HOPE. Help them to see the Light of Christ. Please call Marge Walsh for information about CaringHands Prayer Chain at (516)767-2936 or email at: [email protected]. March 15, 2015 Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who remain steadfast in their Lenten promises through increased prayer, sacrifice and almsgiving. Alcoholics Anonymous Meet for a closed step meeting every Sunday starting at 7:00 PM in the Parish Center. Welcome to Life…
