If you aren't familiar with his name, you've probably heard his music on the radio, on films like "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption video game. His sound can be hard to categorize but it borders on Alternative Soft Rock and Indie, making for some thought provoking music. His newest release Vestiges & Claws isn't quite as mellow as his previous work but he does stick to his winning formula. His music has the ability to make you feel nostalgic and, for better or worse, solitary – but there is some bite in some of his new work which sounds right at home with his whispery voice. Vestiges and Claws will make you think and contemplate your life, which is a nice side effect compared to the lifelessness of some modern music. The announcement came after The Los Angeles Times published a series of stories following an 18-month investigation that revealed laborers were not being properly paid and were being held in labor camps, many of which did not have beds, reliable water or adequate food supplies. MERCADO BILINGÜE FEBRERO 2015 7 DALLAS CITY FC: THE FACE OF EMERGING FÚTBOL I t’s a great time to be a soccer fan in Dallas/Ft. Worth. We have FC Dallas, the Fort Worth Vaqueros and now a new team is returning for their second season of fútbol: Dallas City FC. Competing in the National Premier Soccer League, the 4th division of Us Soccer under the United States Soccer Federation, Dallas City FC is drawing on local talent to provide the community with a unique soccer club that represents the “true face of Dallas”. “Dallas has always been known for talented soccer players and great soccer atmosphere, those components made our decision to invest in soccer in Dallas easier,” says Dallas City FC President Nicolas Ayala. Ayala comes to the Dallas City FC with some heavy hitting sports experience: he spent a year obtaining his Sports Management MBA working alongside the Real Madrid CF management staff. He’s used the expertise he gained in Spain to bring world class talent to Dallas City FC. “I’ve always wanted to contribute to the growth of this sport in this great country and we are doing exactly that at Dallas City FC. Our players are the true face of Dallas, a multicultural group of people. In our roster we have players from Mexico, El Salvador, Colombia, Bosnia, Zimbabwe, Senegal, USA, and more,” says Ayala. A year ago, Dallas City was holding tryouts for their 2014 inaugural season and Ayala says he’s proud that the club is providing a platform 8 FEBRERO 2015 for local and international talent. This year, the squad has a roster of key players that include the likes of Marlon Duran, Bryan Leyva, and Alex Molano. Marlon Duran played a U-17 World Cup in Nigeria where he defended the U.S. colors. Meanwhile, Bryan Leyva has previously played on the Mexican National team at the U-15 age group and played professionally with FC Dallas. Alex Molano also played with the US National Team U-20 and played in Croatia. “In less than a year we were able to catapult players from our team to sign professional contracts in Europe and Mexico,” says Ayala. “Recently, our club has signed partnerships with Chiapas Jaguar FC of the Mexican 1st Division and Turkspor Augsburg of the German 5th Division. Dallas City FC is a true international soccer organization.” Last year, Dallas City FC helped to create what should remain an entertaining city rivalry with the Ft. Worth Vaqueros. In a two game series (home/away) dubbed the DFW Trinity River Cup, Dallas City FC defeated the Vaqueros twice to earn the title of 2014 Champions. Ayala calls their rivalry with Ft. Worth Vaqueros a friendly one. “It has been a good rivalry for us but our biggest rival is Tulsa, since they eliminated us at last year’s conference semifinal,” says Ayala. “We always strive for the best so we want to beat the best, so Tulsa Athletics is our biggest rival.” Dallas City FC kicks off the 2015 season with a game against the Ft. Worth Vaqueros on May 9th followed by a rematch game with Tulsa Athletics on May 16th. Home games are played at Bishop Lynch High School in east Dallas. Aside from the Premier League team, Dallas City FC also has a soccer academy system for youth player development. For more information on Dallas City FC visit www.DallasCityFC.com. MERCADO BILINGÜE MIS MOTORES Lexus knows “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. That’s why when it came to the 2015 IS 250, Lexus merely had to build upon a solid redesign from last year to make this sporty sedan seem brand spanking new. I realize many of you sports car enthusiasts are eyeing the IS C coupe, but the overall design wasn’t refreshed for 2015 – I’ll admit, that might not matter when it comes to the IS C. However, the updates in the four door IS 250 are welcome additions that crank up the cool a few notches and are worth a second look. But does the IS driving experience keep up the pace? Before I dive into the driving experience, I’d be hard-pressed not to mention the new design feature Lexus brought to exterior and interior of the 2015 IS 250. It all starts with the “spindle grill” that makes its first appearance on the IS this MERCADO BILINGÜE 2015 LEXUS IS 250 By Fabian Campos year. I’ve said before, I’ll say it again: I love the “spindle” grill design and here in the IS, it compliments the car’s design perfectly. The F Sport package kicks the grill into ultra “hip” mode with a very modern but sporty all-black mesh grille. Lexus typically does a fantastic job of balancing the right amount of class, style and aggressiveness and that’s the first thing you’ll notice in the 2015 IS. The body of the vehicle sits at a lower, grounded stance that leans closer to the ground near the front of the car, which gives it the appearance of always being ready to take off. Look at the IS head on and you get a contempary , slightly menacing front end that is uniquely Lexus. Look at the IS from the side, in a profile view, and the fluid angles and smooth curves remind me of a blade – a sharp exterior indeed, FEBRERO 2015 no pun intended. Inside, the IS offers a cabin filled with refined comfort and enough tech goodies to keep you entertained on the road. I’ve never been specifically disappointed with the build quality of the IS interior and again in 2015, Lexus has improved in many areas. With a few exceptions – like the buttons on the steering wheel - none of the materials feel cheap or flimsy. Lexus also managed to squeeze a few more inches of legroom for both front and back passengers. The trunk space leaves much to be desired so keep that in mind. Under the hood, not much has been changed from last year’s IS and this comes with some positives and negatives. The familiar 2.5-liter V-6 is back with the 204 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque. There is an all-wheel drive model that 9 combined with the F Sport package can certainly add a more robust driving experience. The IS 250 is rear-wheel drive and while it was pleasant to drive, the “fun factor” didn’t really kick in until I switched into “sport mode”. Meanwhile, I found gas mileage to be so-so. It’s a shame that the 2015 IS 250 isn’t a more “threatening” driving experience because I feel like this car has potential to compete with the likes of its German target competition. I also found the nearly 4K “luxury/technology” package to be a little steep but then again it’s hard not to fall in love with the LED headlamps, leather trimmed interior and the long list of features you get for that price. Even without this package, at around 38K the 2015 Lexus IS 250 is arguably a competitive value for the type of sporty luxury sedan you get. It’s a well-balanced car and if you’re willing to shell out the extra cash for the amenities, it can zip you around in style.
