Help others in need to help feed those in
need. We ask that families take advantage of the
BOGO (buy one get one) offers at the local
supermarkets, and donate the second item to
the St. Louis Food Pantry. They can be dropped
off in the bins located in the vestibule of the
church. We will then collect them and store them
for others that come to the parish office in need
of food. What a great way to help our neighbors
and set an example to those around us to do the
same!

Lecturas Del Dia
PRIMERA LECTURA (Isaías 25: 6, 7-9)
El profeta Isaías, a través de la elocuente imagen del banquete con alimentos suculentos y vino excelente,
anuncia la vida y el gozo que provienen de la acción salvadora de Dios. El Señor salva, y destrye todo
signo y presencia de muerte, dolor y luto. Quien ha experimentado la salvació de Dios debe proclamarlo a
todoas las naciones. Todos los pueblos están llamados a gozar de esta salvación universal, de esta vida en plenitud por toda
la eternidad.
SEGUNDA LECTURA (1 Tesalonicenses 4:12-17)
San Pablo responde a la cuestión a cerca del destino de los que mueren, afirmando la participación de los cristianos en la
muerte y resurrección de Cristo. El Señor Resucitado, en su venida gloriosa destruirá de forma definitiva el mal, la muerte y
el pecado. Dios Padre, por medio de la resurrección de Cristo, ha hecho posible que nosotros participemos de esa esperanza
viva, de esa vida nueva. Jesucristo resucitado es el fundamento de nuestra fe.
EVANGELIO (Lucas 24: 13-35)
Jesús resucitado se aparece a los discípulos de Emaús. La presencia del Señor, su palabra, sus gestos, fortalece su fe y
les devuelve la esperanza. Lo reconocen al partir el pan. Su cercanía los llena de alegría, y corren a comunicar a los demás
discípulos la noticia de la resurrección del Señor Jesús. Cristo ha resucitado. Creer en El es tener vida, su misma vida. La
comunidad cristiana, animada y guiada por el Espíritu Santo, es continuadora de la misión de Jesús.

Christmas Star Ball. The event is scheduled to take place on
Friday, December 19, 2014 at eight o’clock in the evening at The
Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables. Our special guests for the evening
will be Monsignor James Fetscher, Fr. David Russell, and Fr. Paul
Vuturo.
The Christmas Star Ball will be a fundraiser to benefit our
capital campaign project. As such, we will be selling individual
tickets for $150.00 or tables for $1,500, and we will be offering
sponsorships levels beyond that in the event others might be
interested in supporting the Capital Campaign. 100% of the
proceeds will go towards the capital campaign as this event
has been generously underwritten by Dr. and Mrs. Percy & Ilsen
Aitken.

Midnight Musings / Pensamientos de Media Noche
A Witness to Hope
Here’s a follow-up to the retreat
week that Fr. Biju and I did together
with other priests of the Archdiocese
October 20 to 24 at Our Lady of
Florida Spiritual Center, which for over
fifty years has been administered by the
Passionist Community of priests and
brothers. As I mentioned in the “Midnight Musings” last
week, our retreat director was Fr. Paul Zilonka. He is a
member of the Passionists himself, as well as a professor
of theology and scriptures. He has used his gifts to serve
the Church in the United States and in the Caribbean. He
has worked in seminaries in the formation of diocesan
as well as religious order priests. Seventy-one years old,
he has been dealing with cancer for the past three years.
His treatments including chemotherapy had removed him
from ministry over the past year; he said he could not
even stand up. He had no idea until five weeks ago that
he might do our retreat. Since he felt strong enough and
was in between treatments, he came to South Florida.
Although he is going back North for more treatments, he
explained that the cancer had spread even to his brain;
consequently he thought this could be the last retreat he
would ever give. We were blessed to share that week with
him.
Father Zilonka used themes from the gospel of Mark;
he thought this would be helpful for our priestly spirituality
and practical for our preparation for the next liturgical
year’s use of Mark’s gospel. But in his reflections he not
only drew on his more than forty years of priesthood and
religious life, but also on his own experience of dealing
with life and death issues on a very personal level. He
spoke to us about faith in God even in the face of tragedy
and suffering. He commented that God does not keep
tragedies out of our lives, but he challenged us to see how
God is revealed and found in these difficult situations. We
live in a world without ultimate answers, he said, if we stay
just on the physical level. Only by faith in God and in his
Son Jesus, can we see the ultimate meaning of this life
and grasp the ultimate hope for eternal life.
Remember this phrase from the book and movie:
“Dead Man Walking”? The description of a convict walking
to his execution. The retreat could be described as “dead
man talking” or even “dead man preaching” or it should
be stated better: we did not listen to a man dying but to a
faithful Christian really living and proclaiming Jesus Christ
as our Lord.

Un Testimonio de Fe
He aquí un seguimiento del retiro que el Padre
Biju y yo compartimos con otros sacerdotes de la
Arquidiócesis en la semana del 20 - 24 de octubre en el
Centro Espiritual de Nuestra Señora de la Florida, el cual
por más de cincuenta años ha sido administrado por la
Comunidad Pasionista de sacerdotes y hermanos. Como
mencioné en mis “Pensamientos” de la semana pasada,
el director del retiro fue el Padre Paul Zilonka, miembro de
los pasionistas. El es profesor de Teología y Escrituras. El
ha hecho uso de sus dones para servir a la Iglesia de los
Estados Unidos y el Caribe. El ha trabajado en seminarios
en la formación diocesana así como con ordenes religiosas
sacerdotales. A sus setenta y un años de edad está
luchando contra el cáncer por los últimos tres años. Sus
tratamientos, incluyendo la quimioterapia lo ha alejado de
su ministerio por más de un año; él dice que casi no se
podía mantener en pie. Hasta hace unas cinco semanas
no se podía imaginar que podría hacer este retiro. Ya
que se sentía lo suficientemente fuerte y estaba entre
tratamientos, vino al Sur de la Florida. Aunque regresará
al norte para seguir sus tratamientos, él dice que el cáncer
se ha extendido a su cerebro, consecuentemente él
piensa que este será el último retiro que dirija. Fuimos
bendecidos al poder compartir esta semana con él.
El Padre Zilonka usó los temas del Evangelio de
Marcos; él pensó que nos sería de utilidad para nuestra
espiritualidad sacerdotal y práctica en preparación para
el próximo año Litúrgico donde usaremos el Evangelio
de Marcos. Pero en esta reflexión él no sólo se basó en
los más de cuarenta años de experiencia sacerdotal y de
vida religiosa, sino también en su propia experiencia confrontando la vida y la muerte a un nivel muy personal. El
nos habló de la fe en Dios aún afrontando la tragedia y el
sufrimiento. El comentó que Dios no elimina las tragedias
de nuesta vida, pero si nos desafía a ver cómo Dios se
revela y le encontramos en estos momentos difíciles. Vivimos en un mundo sin respuestas, dice él, si nos mantenemos en el nivel físico. Sólo con la fe en Dios y en su Hijo
Jesús, podemos ver el significado definitivo de esta vida y
ultimadamente abrazar la esperanza de la vida eterna.
¿Recuerdan la frase del libro y la película “Dead
Man Waking”? La descripción del convicto caminando
hacia su ejecución. El retiro se puede describrir como “el
hombre moribundo caminando” o mejor dicho: no escuchamos a un hombre moribundo sino a un fiel Cristiano
realmente vivo y proclamando a Jesucristo, como nuestro
Señor.
