a beautiful reminder that all the good we
seek to do for others bears abundant fruit
when done in the Lord’s name. You are
invited to explore the BAA site to learn
more details about where the funds are used and the
impact of your generosity. The BAA concludes March
22, 2015. Online donations can be made at the

have any questions, stop by the BAA table located in the
gathering area. Thank you for your generosity. The Holy
Family 2015 BAA Committee.
ARE YOU READY FOR THE LENTEN
SEASON? THEN LET US BEGIN!
Fasting and Abstinence Are Required: The Church
emphasizes the penitential nature of Ash Wednesday by calling
us to fast and abstain from meat. Catholics who are over the
age of 18 and under the age of 60 are required to fast, which
means that they can eat only one complete meal and two
smaller ones during the day, with no food in between.
Catholics who are over the age of 14 are required to refrain
from eating any meat, or any food made with meat, on Ash
Wednesday.
Taking Stock of Our Spiritual Life: This fasting and
abstinence is not simply a form of penance, however; it is also
a call for us to take stock of our spiritual lives. As Lent begins,
we should set out specific spiritual goals we would like to
reach before Easter and decide how we will pursue them—for
instance, by going to daily Mass when we can and receiving
the Sacrament of Confession more often.
What are the rules for fasting and abstinence in the
Catholic Church? In the United States, the U.S. Conference
of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has declared that "the age of
fasting is from the completion of the eighteenth year to the
beginning of the sixtieth." The USCCB also allows the
substitution of some other form of penance for abstinence on
all of the Fridays of the year, except for those Fridays in Lent.
Thus, the rules for fasting and abstinence in the United States
are:
Every person 14 years of age or older must abstain from meat
(and items made with meat) on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday,
and all the Fridays of Lent.
Every person between the age of 18 and 60 must fast on Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday.
Every person 14 years of age or older must abstain from meat
(and items made with meat) on all other Fridays of the year,
unless he or she substitutes some other form of penance for
abstinence.

on Friday at least 2 weeks prior to the event or as soon as
possible. Send emails to [email protected]
(Attn: Bulletin Editor). Thank you.
In preparation for the next assembly of the Synod Bishops,
Bishop Burbidge seeks your participation by answering an
online questionnaire on matters of The Vocation and Mission of
the Family in the Contemporary World. This questionnaire
may be filled out by an individual or by a representative of a
group through February 15, 2015 and may be found at
www.dioceseofraleigh.org. If you are a member of a group,
you are invited to host a listening session to consider the questions. After compiling the answers of the group, you may fill in
the questionnaire as a representative. Answers from this Questionnaire will help to inform the preparatory document used by
the Synod Bishops, who will meet in the fall of 2015 to formulate a pastoral response to the challenges faced by families in
living their vocation and mission in Christ.
MINISTERIO HISPANO- FEBRERO 08, 2015
