Page 1 February 15, 2015 Catholic Parish of St. John Neumann ASH WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 18 “Go into your room, shut the door, and pray to your Father.” Matthew 6:6 Mass Schedule and Distribution of Ashes 7:00 a.m.; 8:30 a.m.; 12:00 Noon and 6:00 p.m. English and 8:00 p.m. Spanish Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent when we are marked with the ashes as a symbol of penance. It is a season of reflection, penance and fasting which prepares us for Christ’s Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Ashes are an ancient symbol of repentance. They help us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice. They also remind us of our mortality (“remember you are dust and to dust you shall return”) and thus of the day that we will stand before God and be judged. To prepare well for the day we die, we must die now to sin and rise to new life in Christ. Being marked with ashes at the beginning of Lent indicates our recognition of the need of deeper conversion of our lives during this season of renewal. Prayer, fasting and almsgiving make up the traditional practices of Lent. Prayer nourishes our spirits; Fasting disciplines our bodies, helps us seek the Lord with greater intensity and puts in solidarity with those who suffer; Works of charity enlarge our hearts as we commit ourselves to the good of others. A heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who has made a commitment to the 2015 Archbishop’s Charities and Development Drive (ABCD). To date, 230 + of our 2800 parish families have responded and have generously donated approximately $150,000 toward our goal of $256,135. We are more than half way to our goal. Imagine the ‘heart’ work that could be done with the support of every family. Now is the time to make a return to the Lord for all He has given us. Even a small gift can make a big difference in the lives of those in need. Whether your gift is $50, $365, $1,000 or even $5,000, it is truly impactful and appreciated. If you have not yet responded to the 2015 ABCD, please consider making a gift—a gift from the heart—by using the pledge envelopes you received or by making a gift online at www.isupportabcd.org. Pledge envelopes are also available in the Parish Office or the literature rack. Thank you for all that you do and the spirit in which you do it! God bless you! Page 3 February 15, 2015 PASTOR’S REFLECTION Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 15, 2015 Dear Friends, In the Sacrament of Baptism, Jesus does for us what He does for the leper in the Gospel proclaimed today: we are healed of our spiritual infirmities so that we can become a part of the community of those who worship God. To each of us who ask Him for cleansing from sin He says: “I do will it. Be made clean.” • How willing am I to let go of the ties that bind us...away from God? As you reflect on God’s Word, may He strengthen you with His peace. May the good Lord bless you and your dear family abundantly each day. Please pray for me. In Christ, Msgr. Pablo A. Navarro AN EMMAUS EXPERIENCE A RETREAT FOR WOMEN MARCH 6 – 8 What is so great about making a retreat? On a retreat you’ll be free from the distraction of your daily routine. With your whole self relaxed, you will be able to open your heart and listen to Jesus and the Holy Spirit. That is the deep satisfaction, inner peace and joy you will find. Take time out to make an Emmaus retreat. If you haven’t registered yet, you still have time. Registration after all Masses through March 1. For more information, call Tracey Fernandez (305) 799-7147 or email [email protected]. Catholic Parish of St. John Neumann A MINUTE IN THE CHURCH; ONE MINUTE CATHOLIC APOLOGETICS Apologetics- the branch of theology concerned with the defense and rational justification of Christianity (in our case, Catholicism). Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks for a reason for your hope. 1 Peter 3:15 Lent What is Lent, and what are the rules for Catholics during Lent? Well, Lent is the forty day liturgical season leading up to Easter. The reason we observe it is to imitate Christ, who fasted and prayed for forty days in the dessert before beginning his public ministry. The three pillars of Lent are almsgiving, prayer and fasting. What are the rules for fasting for Catholics? The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops says that all Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59, who are able, must fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. That’s all just two days. Now if you are physically unable to fast because of a medical condition or some other legitimate reason, then you are not bound to fast. A fast means having one full meal and two smaller meals, the total of which should not exceed the larger meal. Further, all Catholics between ages of 14 and 59 are to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday and all Fridays in Lent. This includes meat or anything made with meat. The reason we do this is to offer up a small sacrifice to God, and unite that sacrifice with the sacrifice of Christ. JUSTICE CORNER Power to Heal Us Today’s Scriptures reminds us that some diseases, like leprosy, have social consequences. In Biblical times, lepers were ostracized from their communities and forced to identify themselves as being unclean. Thankfully, the Scriptures do not force us to expose the wounds of our souls in such a public way. Yet, sins like gossip, slander, hatred, and violence often lurk within us producing social consequences like animosity, divisions, prejudice, impatience, broken relationships, abuse, etc. The Gospel reminds us that Jesus has the power to heal us. The Sacraments have the power to heal us – especially the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Jesus can bring us back into right relationships with others if we ask for his help. Think about difficult or broken relationships in your life. How might you have contributed to the strain? Then, like the leper, go to Our Lord and ask Him to heal your wounded soul so that you might be reconciled with your enemies.
