ST. ANNE CATHOLIC COMMUNITY BASILIAN FATHERS ARCHDIOCESE OF GALVESTON-HOUSTON LA COMUNIDAD CATÓLICA DE SANTA ANA PADRES BASILIANOS Of about 3,800 registered families at St. Anne, approximately 1,600 are contributing to St. Anne. Our goal is for at least half of those contributing, or 800 families, to be enrolled in Faith Direct online giving by Easter 2015. Help us reach our goal! www.faithdirect.net V SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME V DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO St. Mark is interested in the link between the miraculous activity of the Messiah and the awakening of faith. Faith leads people to ask Jesus for healing. Healing leads them to the total commitment of faith. The cure of Peter’s mother-in-law suggests more than Christ’s extraordinary power over a sick body. Mark demonstrates his interest in the meaning of the event: the healing of bodies is aimed at wholeness of spirits. Made whole by the power of Jesus, we too must devote our full energy to serving the Lord. ST. ANNE CHURCH / LA IGLESIA DE SANTA ANA 2140 Westheimer Rd. Ana MENSAJE PASTORAL God is goodness. It is best to choose to be at peace than to be right. Clinging to anger or believing that others are always wrong does not allow us to have peace of mind or emotional peace. The first step is willingness to forgive. God is forgiveness. When we recognize that thoughts of revenge makes us suffer, it is easier to want to forgive and forget past resentment. God is peace. We know that even if we forgive, the other person will not necessarily change. It’s only about changing our thoughts and attitudes. Forgiveness does not mean you have to match the other’s behavior. Forgiveness raises self-esteem and reduces anxiety and depression. God is joy. Thinking in the present is good for healing emotional wounds. If you are angry about something that happened in the past, ask yourself what good it does to be angry today. If it are not improving your life, don’t stay angry. God is mercy. Suffering a crime, a sentimental problem or any other situation where you feel powerless, resentment is common. Often in these instances, you need to forgive yourself, because people tend to blame themselves for what they could have done and didn’t. God is wisdom. Perhaps the act of forgiving is not actually just an altruistic fact oriented toward others, but it benefits physically, spiritually and emotionally the one that forgives because it eliminates the negative feelings that can hurt. It has a boomerang effect that strengthens the welfare of both people. God is compassion. Forgiveness takes practice. A decision must be made to have the desire, make a commitment, repeat it many times to master it and incorporate it as natural. This healing is experienced in the sacrament of reconciliation. If we live in forgiveness as God forgives us; we will live...! Perhaps not; they are very similar to the ones we replaced, in fact they are reconstructed from pieces of the former candlesticks which, in turn, had been made from candlesticks original to the church in 1940. The new candlesticks are taller and slightly wider around with a base that helps them stand up straight all the time. The candlesticks were donated to St. Anne Catholic Church in memory of Betsy Sauer, who led our Buildings and Grounds Committee for some 15 years and served as Project Manager for all our major construction – think church renovation, Parish Center, and lastly the new church offices and the school administration building! Betsy was raised at St. Anne Church, went to school here and made all her sacraments here. She loved her parish and was instrumental in making sure that the buildings and grounds were maintained, and kept up to her high standards. St. Anne Parish is grateful to designer Bill Peck and all the members of Betsy’s Birthday Club – Catholics and nonCatholics- who honored Betsy with the newly-designed candlesticks. Check This Out… The primary and indispensable role of women in transmitting the faith to new generations was the focus of Pope Francis’ remarks during a weekday Mass last week. “Faith is a gift. It is not possible to study Faith. We study things of faith to understand it better; but with study alone, one never comes to Faith and is a gift that passes from generation to generation.” He specifically mentioned mothers and grandmothers. RESPECT LIFE NEWS In January, Project Gabriel helped a teenage mother, “Kelly,” (name changed for privacy) obtain necessary baby items, both for her newborn and for her other young child. Please pray for Kelly and her growing family, as well as for her Gabriel “Angel” (i.e., her project contact and mentor) as she plans a baby shower to celebrate Kelly’s decision to choose motherhood and collect gifts for both mom and baby! Moms of the parish: Please stay tuned for an upcoming Gabriel Angel training at the parish, where you can learn more about how to help and mentor mothers like Kelly! The time commitment is small and is on your own schedule. WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES Philadelphia, September 22-27, 2015 with Pope Francis. More information at http://www.worldmeeting2015.org/. At this time that the final preparation for the sacraments takes place with great intensity. This step is called election because the acceptance made by the Church is founded on the election by God, in whose name the Church acts. This step is also called the enrollment of names because as a pledge of fidelity the catechumens inscribe their names in the book that lists those who have been chosen for initiation. In the coming weeks the parish will be celebrating a number of rites, in which the Rite of Christian Imitation of Adults (RCIA) will be taking part. Starting on February 7, the Rite of Acceptance into the order of catechumen will take place. This is when the person who has not been baptized declares their intention to the Church, and the Church in turn accepts them as persons who intend to become its members. It is our belief that God showers His grace on the catechumen since the celebration manifests their desire publicly and marks their reception and first consecration by the Church. On Sunday, February 8, the Rite of Welcoming will be celebrated for those Christians who were baptized in another denomination. The Church in turns welcomes these candidates as they declare their intentions to become members. There will be three Sundays during Lent that the rites belonging to the period of purification and enlightenment will take place. They are referred to as the Scrutinies. The Scrutinies are rites for selfsearching and repentance. They are meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect—to help bring out all that is upright, strong and good. These rites are to help with the conversion of the elect and deepen their resolve to hold fast to Christ and to carry out their decision to love God above all. On Saturday, February 21, the Rite of Sending will be celebrated. At this time we, the Church, send the Catechumens and Candidates to the Rite of Election with the Bishop. This Rite is seen as both election and the enrolment of names, closing the period of the During the season of Lent the Church is asked to place the concerns of the Catechumens and Candidates in your daily prayers as they continue their faith journey to join the Church as full members. At this time we have 16 individuals who are seeking to join the Roman Catholic Church. Many of these who are thinking of entering the Church are in need of a sponsor. The role of a sponsor is one who will serve as a bridge for the candidate or for the catechumen to the greater community of the Church. Your role is to become the extension of the parish and the universal Church to them. You are not expected to know every aspect of the Church’s teaching, but rather simply to be a guide, an example of a Catholic living your faith as best as you can. Some of the ways that you will do this is by sharing prayer, listening, and walking with them through the formation process to become Catholic.
