Reflexión Magnánima de Padre John Robert Skeldon
La imagen de la puerta es sorprendente en el pasaje del Evangelio de Marcos: "El
pueblo entero se reunieron en la puerta." Jesus estaba en la casa de Simon Pedro,
y acababa de traer la recuperacion y restauracion de la salud de la suegra de
Simon. En ese momento, la ciudad entera se reunió en la puerta del lugar de la
sanacion y de la vida. La puerta es una poderosa imagen en las Escrituras. El evangelio de Juan se refiere a
Jesus como la puerta de las óvejas: "Yo soy la puerta; si uno entra por mí, estara a salvo; y entrara y saldra, y
encontrara alimento" (Juan 10: 9). Entonces, no es, la puerta de la casa de Simon Pedro; es mas bien porque
Jesus esta allí en la puerta que le da un significado especial. Jesus es la puerta/el portal por el que los seres humanos entramos a conocer íntimamente la vida de Dios.
Y la puerta no se queda en un solo lugar por mucho tiempo. Se mueve/el se traslada a otros lugares para
que los seres humanos en esos lugares puede entrar en la vida que solo Dios puede dar. De hecho, Jesus le dice a
Simon: "Vamos a ir a los pueblos cercanos para predicar tambien allí. Para este fin he venido. "Las enfermedades y adicciones, temores y posesiones de estas personas no los tienen que controlar mas. Pueden dejarlos en la
puerta y caminar libremente al saber su verdadera identidad como hijo o hija de Dios, un hermano o una hermana del Senor Jesus. Jesus es la puerta en donde podemos dejar todas nuestras cargas y a traves de la cual podemos viajar a una vida nueva y mas abundante. De nuevo, como el Evangelio de Juan dice en el siguiente versículo, donde Jesus dice que el es la puerta: "Yo he venido para que tengan vida y la tengan en abundancia" (Juan 10:10).
Job, en la primera lectura, se queja amargamente de las interminables faenas de los seres humanos. La
vida no es justa, y parece que nuestras vidas padecen de tanta miseria y monotonía. Es casi como si Job se estuviera preguntando: ¿Que sentido tiene la vida? Tal vez, muchas veces nos hemos preguntado esto tambien o nos
hemos sentido tan abrumados que de pronto nos queremos dar por vencidos.
Hay una historia que se cuenta de un hombre con una imagen de chaman como uno muy sabio o un rabino. Un día le dijo a su discípulo, su alumno, "Tengo dos lobos dentro de mí, y siempre estan luchando por el
control. Uno de ellos es el lobo de la ansiedad, el miedo, el resentimiento, los celos, la ira y la amargura. El otro
es el lobo de la compasion, la bondad, la mansedumbre, la misericordia, el autocontrol, la confianza y la paz. "El
aprendiz, perplejo por esta confesion de su amo, le pregunto:" ¿Cual va a ganar? "El maestro, con un brillo en su
ojos, respondio: "El que me alimente. Ese es el que va a ganar. "¿A cual lobo vamos a alimentar? ¿A que lobo estamos alimentando?
Hay una puerta cerca en la que nos podemos reunir, si somos lo suficientemente valientes, para cruzarla. Nuestras vidas no tienen que seguir en la miseria y la angustia y el dolor. A pesar de que son parte de nuestras vidas,
no las tenemos que dejar gobernarnos. Llegamos a la puerta en donde nos toman de la mano y nos ayudan a
levantarnos, para que podemos empezar a servir en el amor. Nos reunimos alrededor de la puerta en la que se
curan nuestras enfermedades, dolencias y nuestros demonios son expulsados. Caminamos a traves de la puerta
por la cual-no por la cual no- hemos buscado todos estos anos y la cual predica a este nuestro pueblo y nos da la
Buena Nueva aquí en este mismo lugar.
Pablo conocía esta puerta tambien, y la conocía muy bien, tanto así que el—como la suegra de Simon, que comenzo a servir despues de su encuentro con Jesus--: "... hizo todo para todos..." por el bien del evangelio, como
la segunda lectura dice. Y nosotros lo sabemos tambien. El es Cristo Jesus, nuestro Senor y Salvador, el Hijo de
Dios, amigo de los pecadores, Buen Pastor y la puerta de las ovejas ... una puerta para que nos reunamos a su
alrededor y entrar, unicamente si tenemos el valor.

Magnanimous Musings of Fr. John Robert Skeldon
The image of the door is striking in the gospel passage from Mark: “The whole
town was gathered at the door.” Jesus was in the house of Simon Peter, and
had just brought recovery and restoration of health to Simon’s mother-in-law.
Now, the whole town is gathered at the door of the place of healing and life.
The door is a powerful image in the Scriptures. The gospel of John refers to Jesus as the door of the
sheep: “ I am the door; if any one enters by me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture” (John 10:9). It is not, then, that it is the door at Simon Peter’s house; it is rather because Jesus is there
that the door takes on special significance. Jesus is the door/gate through which human beings enter to know
intimately the life of God.
And the door does not stay in one place for very long. It moves/he moves to other places so that human beings in those places can enter into the life that only God can give. Indeed, Jesus tells Simon, “Let us
go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.” These people’s illnesses and addictions and fears and possessions do not have to control them anymore. They can leave them
at the Door and walk freely knowing their true identity as a son or daughter of God, a brother or sister of the
Lord Jesus. Jesus is that door where they can leave what weighs them down and through which they can
journey to a new and more abundant life. Again, as John’s gospel says following on the verse where Jesus
says he is the door: “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10).
Job, in the first reading, complains bitterly about the lot of human beings. Life is not fair, and our
lives seem so much misery and drudgery. It’s almost as if he is asking: What’s the point to life? Perhaps,
many times we have asked that as well or felt so overwhelmed that we just wanted to give up.
There is a story told of a very wise man—a shaman-like figure or rabbi. One day he told his disciple,
his student, “I have two wolves inside me, and they are always fighting for control. One is the wolf of anxiety and fear and resentment and jealousy and anger and bitterness. The other is the wolf of compassion and
kindness and gentleness and mercy and self-control and trust and peace.” The apprentice, perplexed by this
in his master, asked, “Which one will win?” The master, with a glimmer in his eyes, answered, “The one that
I feed. That is the one that will win.” Which wolf will we feed? Which wolf do we feed?
There is a door around which we can gather, and if we are courageous enough, can step through. Our
lives do not have to continue to be misery and trouble and sorrow. Though they are part of our lives, we do
not have to be ruled by them. We come to the Door at which our hands are grasped and we are helped up, so
that we can begin to serve in love. We gather around the Door at which our illnesses and sicknesses and diseases are cured and our demons are driven out. We walk through the Door whom—not which—whom we
have sought these many years and who preaches to us in our village and tells us Good News in our place.
Paul knew this door too. Paul knew him well, so much so that he—like Simon’s mother-in-law who
began to serve after her encounter with Jesus— “…became all things to all…” for the sake of the gospel, as
the second reading says. And we know him too. He is Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior, Son of God, Friend
of sinners, Good Shepherd and Door of the sheep…a door for us to gather around and to enter through if we
but dare.

It’s Not Too Late to Join the Joy of the
Gospel Classes by Fr. John Robert

easily join in the class. Fr. John Robert is leading
a reading and discussion about this most
substantial papal document that we have seen in
a long time. These classes are on Thursdays at
7 pm and repeat on Fridays at 9:30 am. The Joy of the Gospel. will meet weekly for six weeks. You are encouraged to purchase a copy of the document for yourselves.

Sacrament of Baptism (newborns - age 6): Parents requesting the Sacrament of Baptism should be either living within parish boundaries or be registered in the parish. Parents and godparents are expected to attend a baptism class for an infant to be baptized. Parents are required to bring a signed photocopy of the child’s state-registered birth certificate to the baptism class. Godparents who are not registered at St. Bartholomew must provide a letter from their parish which verifies that they meet the godparent
requirements. All paperwork must be turned into the office before scheduling your child’s baptism date. The next class will be 7 p.m.
on Thursday, February 12th in the church hall. Call the office to sign up for this class. Parents also need to call the office if you need
to use the nursery while attending this class. For more information, call Art and Cecilia Villa, 817-292-3897. The next English Baptism ceremony will be Saturday, May 2nd at 10 a.m. in the church for those who have attended the class.

Retreat Center weekends next year (2015) as follows:
Women (in English): Thursday March 5 – Sunday March 8
Men (in English): Thursday May 21 – Sunday May 24
Hispanic Men, Women and Couples: Friday Aug. 7 - Sunday Aug. 9
