GrandKnight Message
Greetings Brothers! As we begin the
shortest month of the year, there is no
shortage of activities for our council.
Valentine’s Day approaches and we have
scheduled a Sweetheart’s Dinner at
Tavern on the Rail for Sunday evening
February 15th starting at 5:30pm. The
menu choices are Beef Tips, Chicken and
Salmon. Many thanks to Bob Harvey for
his planning, scheduling and ticket selling.
He has also come up with an after dinner
program that Bob Weiner will emcee in
his usual inimitable style. But Brother
Weiner assures me that this is absolutely
his last hurrah in this capacity.
Lent begins on February 18th and with
Lent comes our world famous Fish Fry
dinners on Fridays. Because of the Parish
Hall fire we cannot follow our former
dinner processes. The first major change
is that only carry-out meals will be
available. The second change is that the
meals will be prepared and distributed
from Verbeke Hall. The third change is
that we will initially be preparing meals
on the first two Fridays. After that we
will assess the profitability of the effort
and decide whether or not to continue for
the rest of Lent. Stay tuned and advise
your neighbors!!
I’d like to publically thank Brother Joe
Milkevitch for his generous donation to
the council!!
I sadly report the death of the Associate
State Chaplain Fr. Frank Ready. He has
faithfully served the Knights of Virginia
for many years. Father Ready has had a
huge impact on Virginia Knights, families
and the State Council throughout his years
of service here in Virginia. He formed
three new councils, served as the District
Friar for the 4th Degree and faithfully
served as our Associate State Chaplain for
ten years, providing wise and thoughtful
counsel to two State Chaplains and ten
State Deputies, as well as participating at
conferences for Chaplains at Supreme. He
frequently led our regular State meetings
and State Officers’ meetings in prayer and
reflection that provided focus and set the
atmosphere for productive sessions. Please
pray for the repose of his soul.
In January we tallied up the number of
volunteer hours that our members gave to
the council, church and community in
calendar year 2014. The total was 5627, a
10 percent increase from the prior year.
The most hours (3310) were tallied in
support of church activities.
The second state fundraiser for the
fraternal year is here. It is similar to the
football sweeps in the fall but is called the
Basketball Slam. Each ticket is $10.00
and the council keeps $2.00. Each ticket
has four college teams on it. If your set of
four scores the most points across the
entire NCAA tournament then you win
$500, the second highest $400, etc. The
question for the council is, shall we
participate? The answer is no, unless
someone comes forward to lead the sale of
tickets. If no one comes forward before
the end of the council meeting on

February 11th, then we will not
participate.

leading this effort, let me know at 540 894

in person. Keep warm and dry!! (Bob

COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES
Red Cross Blood Drive
Our Council and the American Red
Cross will conduct a Louisa County Blood
Drive on Saturday, February 14, 2015,
from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Verbeke
Hall at St. Jude.
The demand for blood continues to
outpace donations. About 5% of the
people, who are eligible to donate, do so.
Please consider joining this wonderful
group of contributors. When you donate,
your blood is broken down into three

components. That’s why you often hear
that when you donate blood, you can help
save up to three lives. Red blood cells
(45% of your donation) can go to people
who need blood transfusions in traumas or
surgery. White blood cells and platelets
(1% of your donation) can be used for
people suffering from cancer or anemia.
And Plasma (55% of your donation) can
help primarily burn victims. YOU CAN
HELP if you are at least 17 years old;
weigh a minimum of 110 pounds; are in
relatively good health; and have not
donated blood in the past 56 days. For
further information or to make an
appointment to give blood, please call
Larry Fridley at 540-894-8375 or email
him
at
[email protected].
PLEASE CONTRIBUTE!
If you cannot contribute, please help
your Council prepare for and conduct the
blood drive. We will need volunteers to
take sign-ups after Masses, make reminder
telephone calls to our past contributors, set
up the Verbeke Hall before the event, and
put the Hall back the way it was after the
event. If you can help in any way, please
contact Larry Fridley.
