Moralism Versus Gospel Senior Pastor Dan & Rhonda Backens All religions, other than Christianity, operate on the premise, “If I am good, I am accepted by God,” which is at the heart of moralism. Irreligious people, on the other hand, live as if they themselves are god and have the philosophy, “I don’t need to please anyone but myself.” The gospel is a radical departure from both of these worldviews, for it asserts, “I am fully accepted by God through Jesus Christ alone, not through anything I have done or can do.” Unfortunately, many born-again, Spirit-filled, believers live day-to-day out of a deep-seated moralism, since they act as if all blessing, acceptance, and favor from God comes through their own effort and moral living. This kind of life is never joyful, since it inevitably produces a fear of being constantly graded by God on our performance. KEMPSVILLE Campus Pastor Joel Solomon We believe… You matter to God. Heaven and Hell are real. Jesus, God’s Son, died because of your sin, and rose again. When you believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you are saved. The Bible is true and relevant for your life. The Holy Spirit will give you the power to live a life of victory. Martin Luther wrote, “All those who do not at all times trust in God’s favor, grace, and good-will, but seek his favor in other things or in themselves…practice idolatry.” If we seek any justification or acceptance by God outside of Christ’s atonement, we put something higher in our lives than Christ Himself, and that is nothing less than idolatry. The gospel declares you justified, accepted, forgiven, blessed, secure, assured, reborn, adopted, and free all through the gift of salvation purchased by Jesus Christ and through nothing of yourself. The more you reflect upon the truth of the good news, the more you understand why Scripture calls it the glorious gospel! January 31 & February 1, 2015 Welcome, Guests!
