TAPS Royal Canadian Legion Branch “6” Cloverdale 17567 - 57th Avenue Surrey, B.C. V3S 1G8 Lounge: 604-574-4828 Office: 604-574-5300 [email protected] www.cloverdale.bc.ca/legion Chairperson – Marie Noseworthy Editor – Pat Sharkey February - April 2015 President's Report – Cde Pat Ostrom Happy New Year everyone! We recently received a few interesting memo’s to note from BC Yukon command: Tickets $15, now on sale at the bar • The Moptops Sunday, March 22 Elvis Tribute by Ben Klein • Sunday, March 1 Tickets $15 at the bar Tickets $15 at the bar #144.14 - Are we too grumpy? Legions struggle with the reception people get at some of our branches. Put bluntly, the Legion cannot survive on its current membership alone; to continue our mission of remembrance, we must embrace those that walk through our doors, regardless of background, age, or profession. Please do your part to ensure that we are a friendly accepting branch! #159.14 - Visitors register and signing in of guests. This memo will be posted at the main door. Please review it. • #09.15 – Family events. The Legion expects that every branch will fully embrace this initiative of having family events and minors in the licensed premises. Branch 6 has formed a sub-committee to determine how we can implement this initiative in our branch. Please let the branch secretary know if you want to be on this sub-committee. Upcoming meetings include the Annual General Meeting on Wednesday February 25, branch general meeting on Wednesday March 25, branch general meeting on Wednesday April 22, and the Branch Elections meeting on Saturday May 30 (please note that the elections meeting starts at 10 am). Last Post Allen Scott Jean Riddler John Ewert Isabella Kilroe “We Will Remember Them” Ladies Auxiliary – Cde Marilyn Chepil The Question is: What did the Groundhog REALLY see? The holiday season is over for another year, and our Back Door Christmas Bazaar was an outstanding success! Thank you again to all our community members who donated towards our biggest ever Silent Auction, as well as those vendors who added to the festivities of the day by presenting a wide variety of items for sale. Plans are already underway to make next year's even better! We have had several new members join our LA in the last months of the year, and some have already been busy contributing their services through our luncheons for the vets of both George Derby and Brock Fahrni and also other events. If you are in the Branch on a Friday or Saturday evening you will have met our many volunteers selling the 50/50 tickets, headed up either by Rosemary or Zandra, and we thank you for your continued patronage! Our LA members will be assisting the Dominion Darts Tournament in May by helping to supply souvenirs for their goody bags. We will gladly accept donations from businesses representing Cloverdale. Once again our great cooks will be making the WORLD FAMOUS MEAT PIES, which will be available starting March 30-April 1 in the Legion auditorium. The pies are chicken or beef and sell at 3 for $10. They are great to keep on hand for a quick meal. Mark your calendar as they sell fast, so don't miss out. Pre-orders can be made by calling Donna at 604-576-3932 or Jan at 604-575-2065. At our last meeting, two delegates and one flag bearer were elected to attend the upcoming convention in Parksville, May 2-6, 2015. We look forward to expanding our knowledge at the forthcoming seminars! Our regular Ladies Auxiliary meetings are the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 1:00 pm in the auditorium of the Legion. Membership is only $20 for a year. New members are always welcome (men can also become members). If you are in need of catering for a banquet, party or Celebration of Life, our experienced LA cooks can provide delicious meals, finger food or just desserts for your event. Please call our President Jan Campbell-Brewer at 604575-2065 or our Catering Committee head, Janet Kozakow at 604-838-1005 for further details. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to our LA Members who are not well enough to attend our meetings and we wish them all the best. Looking forward to our new spring flowers blooming! Membership – Cde Deana Johnson Greetings Comrades and Happy New Year! January has been very busy with renewals and new membership applications. To date we have 1,350 members that have paid 2015 dues. A “Time Is Running Out” reminder notice will be mailed out at the end of January to our 500+ members who have not had the opportunity to renew their membership yet this year. Postage has increased so much. Please try to be prompt with your membership renewals so that we can avoid unnecessary postage expenses. We worked very hard again last year to increase our member base. We hosted a successful Legion Week Open House in June, had the biggest turn out ever for our Remembrance Day ceremony and we continue to participate in the ongoing “One by One Campaign”. At the end of December 2012 we had 1852 paid members, in December 2013 we had 1906 and on December 31, 2014 we had 1951 paid members. We continue to grow our numbers albeit very modestly at a time when many service organizations are experiencing declining membership. Thank you to everyone who signed up or recommended a new member to join our Branch!! As always, Debbie our Branch Secretary, all of our bar staff or any Executive member would be pleased to take your dues payment and provide you with your new membership card and door pass. We can accept cash, cheque, debit and credit cards. Don’t forget, if you are not able to drop by the branch to renew your membership in person you can send us a cheque and we will gladly mail your membership card out to you. 2015 dues are $55.00. Make your cheque payable to RCL Branch 6 and mark “Membership” on the memo line. You can find the branch address located on the front page of this TAPS Newsletter. Please note that you must pay your 2015 dues by January 31, 2015 to remain a member in good standing. To maintain our current dues schedule we must retain all of our existing members in addition to signing up new members. If you have any suggestions or ideas that would help us with recruitment or retention, we would love to hear from you! Entertainment – Cde Jay Fisher The committee is bringing in new bands and special events throughout the winter & spring: • February 8: Country Queens Tribute with Bonnie Kilroe • March 1: Elvis Tribute with Ben Klein • March 22: Beatles Tribute with the Mop Tops • May 10: Mothers Day with Elvis Elite Steve Elliot Finance – Cde Glenn Thomsen It is always difficult to make money in December because of holiday closures, the lack of days open, statuary holiday pay, etc. As a result the Branch shows a loss of ($6908) before Donations, Amortization, and Investment Gains. After these components are included, the Branch has a net loss of ($8890) bringing the YTD profit to $2627. This is an improvement over last year, but still a very dismal performance to say the least. The Net Profit from the Licensed Premise continues to be a concern with a drop of $14,535 or 31% over last year. Membership dues continue to be a large component of our revenues with a net contribution of approximately $30,000 after the per capita tax. The contributions of the Ladies Auxiliary, Keno sales and Ways & Means are all positive and equally important. The Branch Expenses are up $8130 or 4%. This increase needs to be aggressively addressed by our Executive. The Rodeo band will be Retro Sonic. We will be working to bring in Music Bingo every month. The first Music Bingo was a great success, with lots of prizes to the winners. Please see our website for a complete calendar of events. To mark the 75th anniversary of Canada's engagement in the Second World War, beginning September 10, 2014, living Canadian Veterans of the Second World War may request a special commemorative lapel pin and certificate of recognition. For more information phone 1-866-5222122 or go to www.veterans.gc.ca Much money and many volunteer hours have been spent in the Kitchen in 2014, and 2015 will be much more positive. We have to encourage Ways & Means to host more special events to increase their contribution. Meat Draw sales have increased $12,887 or 18%. A big thanks goes out to those volunteers. The year 2015 will be a big challenge for your executive as the Branch requires ongoing maintenance and faces declining revenues. Building Committee – Cde Glenn Thomsen I met with the Surrey City Development Corporation and a new potential developer for the Phase Two of Cloverdale West. After some discussion it was decided that the Building Committee should survey the Branch membership to help decide the best direction for the Branch re-development. The survey will ask questions such as: what size of facility could the membership accept? Should some of the reserve be used to bridge the short fall of finances required to build a new branch? Should the Branch remain on its present location and use reserve funds to upgrade the building? We will be doing a mailed survey to every member. SCDC has agreed to share in the expense. In addition, more for information than anything, I communicated with Townline Housing Solutions to ask about their progress on Phase One of Cloverdale West. They are still planning on a sales office this Spring and if pre-sales meet their expectations then construction will start in the fall of 2015. The building has been reduced from four floors to three and there have been some roof design changes. The area of the building in which the Branch was to be located will become more commercial/retail space. If they start in the fall of 2015 they hope to complete by the Spring of 2017. TAPS Chairperson Marie Noseworthy and editor Pat Sharkey would like to thank our volunteers who get this newsletter out: Wayne Dermody, Barb & Gord Kendrick, Mary & Ed Burchnal, Ron Waugh, Linda & Ed Giesbrecht, and Hubert Slaght. Publicity – Cde Anne Sharkey Here we are in 2015 - where did 2014 go? Comrades, it may be a little late, however I would like to wish you all the best and a healthy happy New Year. As we move in to the new year we have many challenges ahead of us. We need the support of the membership to attend the General Membership meetings. If you have concerns with regards to the recommendations the executive present at the meetings, that is the time for you to speak up or make a motion from the floor. As a part of your Executive I know we will listen to your concerns, and the membership as a whole will have the opportunity to speak to your concerns. That being said, my comments are made without prejudice, it is time that we all work together for the betterment of the Branch. The editor of Taps has been busy preparing this issue for you, and we have submitted an entry to the BC/Yukon Top Ten Newsletter contest. We now have 500 members receiving their Taps by email. Thanks to our advertisers who help pay the cost of printing and mailing the newsletter, please give them your support. We continue to advertise with the Cloverdale Reporter once a month. Monthly calendars are available for you as you leave the branch, they are in a folder under the General Membership notice. For those of you who wish to have a Table Topper promoting the monthly events, they are on the Publicity table. The Military Recognition Service books are also available and they are free - I encourage you to take a copy. I have attended the following meetings: planning meetings for Open House, publicity meetings in regards to Dominion Darts, and I volunteered for New Years Eve. On January 3rd, the following Comrades volunteered to judge the Zone Poster and Literary Contests: thank you to Zone Commander Dale Johnson, Comrades Joan McLennan, Patrick Sharkey, Linda Hudson, and Pat Keeping. I am pleased to report that the participating entries came from Whalley, White Rock, Richmond, Delta, and Cloverdale. You will be pleased to know that we have entered the following from Branch 6 to go on to the Provincial Command level: Intermediate Black and White Poster, Katherine Inglis; Black and White Poster Primary, Rebecca Jouzy; Colour Poster, Anastasia Sergeyenko; Colour Poster Intermediate, Sophie Soellig; Colour Poster Junior, Jed Okello; Colour Poster Primary, Konori Takayama. We wish to thank the students and the teachers for participating. Good luck in the competition. Congratulations to the Open House chair and committee for making the news as one of the the top ten special events of 2014 in the Cloverdale Reporter - you really put us on the radar! Poppies – Cde Pat Keeping I hope everyone had a good Christmas and New Years – it seems like a long time ago. I think everything is finally in for the Poppy Campaign - looks like we made over $66,627.40. We did very well this year, in fact we did better than last year. There may be a few dollars still coming in. The poems, essays and poster entries were up from last year – we had 319 entries compared to 114 last year. Quite a number were picked at Zone to go to Provincial Command. Did you know?
