Police Officer Review: February 20, 2015 (Job #15-06) Police Officer $4,325-$5,961/month. Appointments are typically made at the beginning of the salary range. The Humboldt State University Police Department (UPD) invites full-time entry level and lateral police officers. We are seeking interested candidates who are already attending a California POST law enforcement academy, recent California POST academy graduates still eligible for employment as a California peace officer, and lateral California police officers. This recruitment is for one full-time, benefitted, 12-month, probationary position in the University Police Department. Duties and Responsibilities: As a sworn police officer on an assigned shift, patrol University properties and the perimeter of the campus by vehicle, foot, or bicycle for the prevention of crime, enforcement of state and federal laws and campus rules and regulations, detection of safety hazards, respond to emergency calls and alarms, investigate personal injury and vehicle accidents, prepare reports and various activity logs, complete investigations, make arrests, transport prisoners, serve warrants, direct traffic, fingerprint, use photography/recording equipment, perform rescue work and administer first aid, make public safety presentations to campus personnel and the general public; participate in training programs; be responsible for maintenance of department equipment, may have the responsibility for the assigned shift as well as other related work/duties as required. Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience: At the time of application, applicant must possess a high school diploma or GED, have a valid California Drivers license, be at least 21 years of age and a U.S. Citizen. Applicant must be currently enrolled in a California POST-certified law enforcement academy, or, be an academy graduate currently employed as, or eligible for immediate employment as, a California police officer in a POSTcertified agency. Applicant must not have been convicted of a felony. Humboldt State University hires only individuals authorized to work in the United States. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: The applicant must have the knowledge of basic English and correct spelling, have the ability to read, interpret, and apply laws and rules. The applicant should have the ability to carry out complex oral and written instructions and the ability to analyze problems. Applicant must be able to complete a Field Training Program in police duties including law enforcement methods applicable to a campus environment, must be able to relate to, and gain confidence and cooperation of the members of the campus community, prepare clear and concise reports, take effective actions in emergencies, learn arrest and safety procedures, gain a working knowledge of existing criminal codes and laws, general knowledge of crime prevention and first aid. Must be willing to participate in training on a continuing basis in public safety and related subjects. PHYSICAL STANDARDS: Height and weight proportional, normal hearing, normal color vision correctable to 20/30 with refractive eye surgery or soft contact lenses. Preferred Qualifications: Past experience in Law Enforcement or Corrections; past experience as a law enforcement trainer/instructor; POST Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced Certificate; Bachelor’s Degree in related field; public speaking skills; bilingual skills. Method of Selection: Applicant must successfully complete a reference check; a physical agility test; a modified assessment process to include a written exercise, a video taped oral presentation, and an oral interview. The successful candidate will be subject to a thorough background investigation including fingerprint check for criminal history, pass a polygraph examination, and upon receiving a conditional job offer must pass a psychological evaluation, medical examination and drug screen (candidate responsible for any travel expenses). Failure of any part of the selection method is automatic disqualification for further consideration.
