Session I : Data protection and business needs
The session will underline the importance of the information society for economic growth

in the Charter of fundamental rights and the in the Treaty: personal data protection is
fundamental right of the European individuals. Over the last decade information on users
and data in general has become a commodity with true economic value. The discussion
will focus on how individuals as well as businesses can protect themselves. The consumer perspective will reflect on both the benefits and disadvantages to the consumer of targeted advertising. The discussion at the end of the session should focus on the technical
and political-regulatory challenges around future challenges or lessons learned from the
past.
