With the opportunities for growth presented by digital markets, the privacy and data protection question is becoming increasingly important. This is recognized in the Charter of fundamental rights and the in the Treaty: personal data protection is fundamental right of the European individuals. Over the last decade information on users and data in general has become a commodity with true economic value. The discussion will focus on how individuals as well as businesses can protect themselves. The consumer perspective will reflect on both the benefits and disadvantages to the consumer of targeted advertising. The discussion at the end of the session should focus on the technical and political-regulatory challenges around future challenges or lessons learned from the past. The session will then show an example of an initiative on avoiding unwanted surveillance from the perspective of the citizen and finish with an outlook on what the debate on privacy means for the future governance of the internet. The final discussion will focus on the usability of single approaches and the need for political intervention in the fast moving world of cyber security.
