Coming soon to the Vatican: haircuts for Rome's homeless
The Vatican’s continued efforts to help the homeless of Rome have expanded beyond
showers and bathrooms at St. Peter’s Square, with a barber shop set to open soon.
“Our primary concern is to give people their dignity,” Archbishop Konrad Krajewski,
head of the Office of Papal Charities, told the Italian news agency ANSA.
In November, construction started on new showers and bathrooms for the homeless under
the colonnades of St. Peter’s Square. The archbishop, who oversaw the project, set aside
space for a barber.
He noted the difficulty that the homeless face in washing themselves, which in turn helps
cause others to reject them—or causes them to fear rejection.
“A person needs to keep their hair and facial hair tidy, also in order to prevent diseases,”
the archbishop said. “This is another service that homeless people do not have easy access
to. It is not easy for them to enter a normal shop because there may be a fear of customers
catching something…”
…The Poland-born Archbishop Krajewski is the papal almoner, who conducts acts of
charity for the poor and raises money to fund the charitable work. When the archbishop
was appointed, Pope Francis urged him not to stay at his desk but rather to be an active
worker for the benefit of the poor.
Many barbers have volunteered with enthusiasm, including two barbers from the national
Italian organization that transports the sick to Lourdes, France and other international
shrines. Other volunteers are finishing their final year in barber school.
The barber service will be open on Mondays, when barber shops in Italy are traditionally
closed. It is scheduled to open in several weeks.

Ladies Guild
Coffee Social: The Ladies Guild has arranged for King
Soopers to deliver fresh, baked goods for our Sunday
coffee social. To offset the cost of these items, the Guild is
asking that those individuals (both children and adults)
who enjoy these refreshments contribute $1 each, on every
Sunday that they partake. Please place donations in the
marked containers on the coffee and pastry tables. -For the convenience of those who prefer to pay by check,
$1 tickets may be purchased, in advance and at a discount:
$10 for 11 tickets or $20 for 22 tickets. Tickets are
available in the gift shop. Please make checks payable to
Holy Protection Ladies Guild and drop in the gift shop drop
box.
Coffee Social Set up and clean up: While King Soopers
delivers our coffee social food, we still need volunteers to
setup and cleanup before and after the social. Please see
Joyce Andrews to sign up for this easy and quick volunteer
opportunity.
!
Roster: If your family’s address, phone number or email address
has changed in the last 18 months, please update this

Parish Growth Update
Please continue praying for the future of our beautiful
parish! Continuing to consider all available options for
providing space for our growing community: -We are awaiting specifics about the possibility of
rebuilding on our present location. We have been in
contact with an architect. We are in the process of finding
out how city regulations for available parking will affect
this possibility.
-Our realtor has sent the Advisory Board info. on some
other potential properties.
-We are considering the possibility of having multiple
communities throughout the Denver Metropolitan area.
See our policy in the stairwell.
-The Advisory Board has viewed the property south of the
church for possible purchase. -We are continuing to look into other options for finding
much needed worship and gathering space for our
community.
