Se January 29, 2015 Centennial School District’s graduation rate continues to improve There are lots of good things happening in the Centennial School District. Earlier today, the state of Oregon released the graduation rates for the 2013-‐2014 school year showing the number of students graduating up to 72 percent from 68.7 percent a year ago, reflecting steady growth over the last five years. In Centennial the district’s four-‐year cohort graduation rate increased eight points from 65 percent to 73 percent and Centennial High School’s rate went from 79 percent to 82 percent. Over the past five years, the district’s four-‐year graduation rate has gone from 57 percent to 73 percent – and this was during a time of significant budget challenges. The increase in graduation rate is a credit to the focus and dedication of staff and improvement of how we identify and support students. The message we want to get out is that Centennial’s graduation rate is above the state average. Our five-‐year rate dipped slightly this year, but that was expected since last year’s four-‐year cohort rate had a slight dip as well. There is still work to be done. Gaps still remain for students in underserved groups in both our four-‐year graduation and five-‐year completer rate. However, one celebration is a Black/African American five-‐year completer rate that exceeds the All Students rate – 81 percent for the district and 93 percent at CHS. We expect the graduation rate in Centennial School District to continue to improve. The district has made significant changes in the structures that support students that have yet to be reflected in our graduation rate. These include: • • • • Use of early warning indicators to identify and serve students before they experience continued failure: Students into OPEN school coming out of sixth grade Centennial Park School shifting the service model to begin supporting students at the transition point between middle school and high school, and Addition of targeted ninth grade support to increase the number of students on track to graduate. According to Superintendent Sam Breyer, “This is a tangible recognition of our good work and the progress we’re making in Centennial. It’s also a call for continued improvement as one out of four students are still not graduating on time.” Centennial High School’s FBLA hosts regional competition Approximately 45 of Centennial High School’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) members competed in last Saturday’s FBLA Mt. Game Night at Centennial Middle School was a lot of fun,” said wellness teacher Mike DeLeon. About 75 seventh graders stayed after school on January 15 to be part of the games. Those in attendance had the opportunity to play alongside peers and teachers from their teams. They also enjoyed some laughs! Activities included an energetic 3-‐on-‐3-‐basketball challenge, volleyball game action, a captivating capture the flag game, and a very exiting prison ball (dodge ball) game. Students “had a blast” moving and increasing their physical activity. The CMS wellness teachers coordinated the event with support from SUN Community Schools. The eighth grade will have its turn to get moving in March when the year’s second P.E. Game Night comes to CMS. Middle school students bring in pennies for blood cancer research The students at Centennial Middle School have been participating in the Pasta for Pennies fundraiser for as long as anyone at the school can remember. In the past five years alone, the students have donated just under $12,000 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The money raised is used to fund research that will someday find a cure for blood cancer. It also helps families struggling to pay medical costs. Earlier this week, the school sent a check to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for $1,753. Although it was a combined effort by all students at CMS, Mrs. Rouffy’s Advisor class deserves a standing ovation for donating more than $380. They have earned an extra special lunch, catered by the Olive Garden. CHS sophomore places in top six Congratulations to CHS sophomore Mariya Dumitrash who placed in the top six in expository with her speech on Moldavia at last weekends McMinnville Speech and Debate Invitational. Dumitrash was one of 11 Centennial High School students that competed. Middle School math department multiplies It’s not that uncommon that there are multiple pregnancies in one school. It seems to happen every year. However, the odds that all three expectant parents are math teachers do seem a little less likely. . So we think it’s worth mentioning. If you do the math, that’s half of the math department at CMS – which means there are how many math teachers at the middle school? Three is one half of? If you answered six – you are correct Pictured are Alex Macke (due June 25th), Beth Reddekopp (due February 9th), and Kristen Poe (due May 22nd).
