From Pastor Stephen Springer FEBRUARY 2015 Lent begins on February 18 this year. Does that seem early to you? It feels that way to me, but let’s look at the facts. Ash Wednesday can fall as early as February 4, or as late as March 10, a range of 35 possible days. On that basis, February 22 would be about “average.” This year, Lent is beginning about four days earlier than “average.” Objectively, that’s barely worth noticing. In 2008, Ash Wednesday fell on February 6. Now THAT was early, and rare. That won’t happen again until 2228! If I’m still the pastor of Dove of Peace in 2228, I’ll really be complaining about that, just like I did in 2008. However, in 2014, Ash Wednesday came very late, on March 5. That’s quite unusual. But I suppose some of us will live to see that happen again. In 2038, Ash Wednesday will fall on the latest possible date: March 10, 2038. If you based this year’s plans on last year’s, Lent would feel noticeably earlier. Dove’s “Mardi Gras” celebration came on March 2nd last year, giving us a bit more time to prepare. This year, it’s on February 15. The “culprit” in all of these changes isn’t really Ash Wednesday. The culprit is Easter, which is calculated using an astronomical formula. Unlike Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day, and All Saints’ Day, which are fixed calendar dates (December 25, March 17, and November 1), Easter varies over a range of 35 possible calendar dates, and is always a Sunday. By definition, Ash Wednesday comes 46 days before Easter. So depending on whether Easter falls earlier or later, Ash Wednesday falls just as early or late, only 46 days ahead. Easter itself falls on: (1) The first Sunday following (2) The first full moon following (3) The vernal equinox (stipulated as March 21). Scientifically speaking, the equinox this year will be March 20; but the Church always pretends that it’s March 21. The first full moon this year, after the equinox, is Saturday, April 4. Therefore, Easter comes on the first Sunday after April 4– which this year happens to be April 5. The Eastern Orthodox Easter is calculated differently, in at least two ways that I am aware of. First, they use the Julian Calendar (as opposed to the Gregorian calendar that we use in the West). And second, they calculate the full moon and the equinox from Jerusalem. 3 THANK YOU FROM ICS Interfaith Community Services would like to Thank Dove of Peace for our part in the generous support to the Gifts of Love Program. This year a total of 185 families were adopted, plus over two dozen more were provided gifts by ICS. For those who brought your gifts here for client pick up, we wish you could have seen the happiness and tears of joy. Some of the comments we received form the families were: “My husband left us. The night before you called to ask if we would like to be a recipient, I had explained to my children that there would be no Christmas this year. And now all this. My prayers have been answered. “I have absolutely nothing and I just got laid off last night.” One family who came to pick up their gifts commented, that they had an artificial tree but couldn’t bring themselves to put it up because they had nothing to put under it, “until now.” February Anniversaries Robert & Marcie Oropeza Lars & Mary Andersen Brad & Nancy Schwab Donald & Lorna Kraemer SAVE THIS DATE Sunday, February 15, 2015 - Mardi Gras Jazz Mass and Brunch The Jazz Mass is at the 11:00 a.m. service with Brunch following in All Saints’ Hall. Valentine’s Day thoughts [This may be] one of the reasons why Valentine’s Day comes as such a momentary delight: because its bright red hearts and its bouquets of bright flowers give a welcome contrast to the prevailing austerity of February [in much of the country]. The colors, of course, are only symbolic. The bright red of valentines stands for the warmth of affection, for the blessing of fellowship and loving kinship. The brightness of the flower colors hints at the springtime soon to come. Human affection is like an island of warmth in a sea of indifference, like a campfire in a wintry wilderness. Valentine’s Day is simply an occasion set aside for the celebration of that precious affection. We who feel the affection make a move in midwinter to convey some of that warmth; we send a card, write a note, telegraph some flowers or make a long-distance call. It takes off the chill; it gives us a stepping-stone to spring. Originally a period of preparation for the Easter baptisms, and a time when the whole Christian Community fasted and prayed to support the new members, the period of Lent has varied from two days (at the end of the first century) to 70 days (in mediaeval times), before settling on the 40 days we observe now. When most of the world became Christian, and the number of baptisms fell off, the baptismal character of Easter became lost, and so the period of preparation took on a penitential character. In the last few decades Easter (especially the Great Vigil) has recovered its baptismal character, and so Lent takes on again its two fold character: preparation for Easter with penitence, and the communal preparation of candidates for baptism. The tradition of fasting is being recovered today, especially to provide for the hungry out of our abstinence. Sometimes ideas are born and then take on a life of their own; such was the case with the Primavera “Cookie Project”. When Dove serves a monthly meal at Primavera Men’s Shelter, dessert is a small package of store bought cookies. Idea #1: For December’s meal let’s serve homemade Christmas cookies in a holiday gift bag. Idea #2: Prior to tying off the gift bag, let’s attach a mini candy cane to the green ribbon. Idea #3: Connie Farugia, having extra Christmas cards on hand, thought to also give each man a card. 26 Dove women responded to the call to donate two dozen or more cookies! (A Primavera staff person suggested six cookies per bag as the men aren’t allowed to take food to their sleeping area). Two long tables in All Saints Hall were laden with an overwhelming number of donated cookies. Alice Hinton and I filled two snack bags of various cookies for each of the 116 gift bags and then Connie Farugia, tied them off as in Idea #2. I had originally hoped to put a dozen cookies, or at least nine, in each bag but since the decision was made for six, there were plenty of “leftover” cookies. Idea #4: Alice Hinton’s light bulb flashed on and she was sure the women and children at the Gospel Rescue Mission would also appreciate Christmas cookies. She was correct; having personally made that delivery, the cookies were gratefully received (multiplication one). At Primavera also the cookies were much appreciated and the men were especially pleased to receive a Christmas card as well. One staff person said he watched as the men sat down and observed that often the cards were opened before they even started to eat. One particular man came up to me and was so very grateful for his beautiful card. Multiplications two and three occurred when one young man asked if we had two extra cards, we did. Another man asked if we had four or five extra “candy bags”; again affirmative. It was heartwarming to see how these men “paid it forward”, by multiplying and sharing Christmas love, God’s love, which our Dove women first shared with them. Idea#5: Sometime after this project, Alice Hinton mentioned to Pastor Springer how generously Dove’s women had responded to the “cookie call”. Pastor became very interested in the project and thought to make it into a Christmas video (curtesy of his friend, Richard) available at Dove’s website. If you have a computer I invite you to enjoy the “cookie project” online at www.doveofpeacetucson.org. Scroll down to and click on dove of peace – You Tube, then click on our church. Idea #6: One of the cookie donators suggested that the Primavera “Cookie Project” become an annual event; I second that! (Idea #7.) What about you ladies…may the “Cookie Call” be extended again December 2015? Think on these things. APOLOGIES for the record setting length of this report but that’s what happens when ideas take on a life of their own or when loaves & fishes (cookies) multiply! Happy 2015, Diane Hoelter 7 8 9
