The Unexpected Journey Attendance & Prayer Slip It is amazing how many books one can read that are about someone living an ordinary life and then BAM the unexpected happens and the main character goes off on an adventure. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. Chyna Shepherd was going to enjoy a weekend with her friend’s family when, BAM, she follows their killer to have a one on one showdown in Dean Koontz’s Intensity. Jack Ryan was with his family in London when, BAM, he stops an IRA assassination and becomes the new target in Tom Clancy’s Patriot Games. Harry Potter had accepted the fact his life would be miserable with the Dursley family until he grows up when, BAM, owls, letters, a half giant, and the news he is a wizard in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books. Jonathan Harker was going on a simple business trip to see a client named Count Dracula when, BAM, he is kept prisoner by vampires and the Count travels to England and causes all sorts of havoc in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. A great story can come from the unexpected. Dean Koontz (mentioned earlier) is a great example of an author that repeatedly crafts stories from random events that happen to ordinary people. Many of his characters are not thrill seeking adventurers, but rather husbands, wives, parents, children, young people, and older people that have to react when various unexpected adventures happen to them. This type of literature imitates life. Every day is a new adventure. We do not know what will happen on any given day, we just get to react to it and respond in the best way we can. When we are caught off guard by life, do we respond in Godly ways? Are God’s word and the Holy Spirit so much a part of our lives that even when we are surprised by an unexpected journey we can respond and handle it with God’s righteousness? Paul and Silas were ready to stop a Roman guard from killing himself in Acts 17. They went to his house where they taught his family the gospel and they were all baptized. Stephen was suddenly arrested in Acts 6-7 and then spoke bravely for Christ in the face of the Sanhedrin before becoming the first martyr. Peter was rejoicing over the baptism of Cornelius’ household in Acts 11 and then he has to explain his actions to circumcised believers who were not happy with him. Unexpected journeys do not just happen in fiction, we will all face them. If we dedicate ourselves to the teaching and models of Christ and to the power of the Holy Spirit, we can handle it and respond as good representatives of Christ. Blessings to you all, we are all in this together. Jeff PRAYER REQUESTS Chris Nuse: Recovery from port removal surgery last Tuesday.
