Simsbury Land Trust Movie – Green Fire
From the Green Fire website: 'Green Fire was produced in partnership between the
Aldo Leopold Foundation, the Center for Humans and Nature, and the US Forest
Service. The film provocatively examines Leopold’s thinking, renewing his idea of a land
ethic for a population facing 21st century ecological challenges. Leopold's biographer,
conservation biologist Dr. Curt Meine, serves as the film's on-screen guide. Green Fire
describes the formation of Leopold’s idea, exploring how it changed one man and later
permeated through all arenas of conservation. The film draws on Leopold’s life and
experiences to provide context and validity, then explores the deep impact of his
thinking on conservation projects around the world today. Through these examples, the
film challenges viewers to contemplate their own relationship with the land community.'

They Called Me Lizzy…From Slavery to the White House
In this 1-hour 'living history' narrative written and directed by Kandie Carle, produced by
the East Haddam Stage Company, and performed by Stephanie Jackson, the story of
Elizabeth Keckly's life as a woman of color during the 19th century is told. While she
was best known as Mary Todd Lincoln's dressmaker, the story of her life before and
beyond her connection to the White House is a compelling one. The dramatic
recounting is not just a slave narrative, but a human story that follows Elizabeth Keckly's
rise from slavery to entrepreneurial freedom, then scandal and decline. It is at times
tragic, at times triumphant, always fascinating. This performance has received rave
reviews at libraries, historical societies and museums throughout the state. We present
it in honor of Black History Month. The performance will be followed by a Q&A session.

Sibelius, Gallen-Kallela, and the Kalevala
The Kalevala, meaning 'Land of the Heroes', is a compilation of Finnish Viking
Mythology. The stories were collected by Joseph Lonnrot, written in the Finnish
language for the first time, and published on February 28, 1835. The spirit of
nationalism gripped Finland in the late 19th century, when the country was under the
heel of Russia. The leading Finnish artist at the time was Akseli Gallen-Kallela and the
leading Finnish composer was Jean Sibelius. They both drew on the Kalevala for much
of their subject matter. This program, 'Sibelius, Gallen-Kallela, and the Kalevala'
introduces the legends in music and painting simultaneously. Join us for this unusual
presentation.
Presenter Jack Brin was drawn to classical music in his teens, with Sibelius being his
favorite composer. While working as a professor of math at Western New England
College, he had the opportunity to share his love of classical music through a Music
Appreciation course that he developed. Following a visit to Sibelius' home in Helsinki,
he decided to create an audio-visual biography of the composer. Since retiring in 1996,
Jack and his wife have been part of the docent corps at the Wadsworth Atheneum. He
shares his knowledge of both art and music through an extensive video series that he
created. Registration is suggested at 860-658-7663 x2200 or www.simsburylibrary.info.

Friends Coffeehouse: Bobby and the Gadgets
The harmonica is a worldwide instrument voicing the music of hundreds of cultures, and
one simple reason could be its SIZE. It fits in your pocket like a cell phone. What has
intrigued many in the music community is its ability, when played by masters, to
encompass all genres of musical style with not just credibility but with critical acclaim from Classical to Jazz to Near Eastern to Irish to Blues to Country. The list grows day
by day.
Bobby and the Gadgets' 'The World of Harmonica' program is an effort to expand the
awareness of the instrument. Using Story Telling, Historical Facts and playing the
instrument in many styles. Bob Hennessy tells the story and plays the music that will
open your ears and minds to 'The World of Harmonica'.
His fast paced program is both entertaining and educational. The show will delight and
perhaps even move you to try the instrument once again. As Bob Hennessy says, 'As a
16 year old having an encounter with a Hohner 260 Chromatic at a New York City Pawn
Shop through today has been a journey of love, pain, joy and heartache all expressed
through my instrument. I hope it’s a story you can hear as I play for you all the emotion
of a lifetime of music.'
Doors open at 7:30. Reserve a seat at 860-658-7663 or www.simsburylibrary.info. Free.
