Dear Applicant, Our fall application period is from Monday, February 2 to Monday, March 16. We look forward to hearing from you. Answers to most or all of your questions can be found on this page, the application itself and especially in “HSC FAQ’s” found in the sidebar. Please read each of these before applying. Home schooling for High School? Each year, many people contact us who are thinking of home schooling a high school student for the first time. We offer a helpful document titled “High School at Home” in the “Home School Support” section in our website. Application Time Frame This application period from 2/2 – 3/16 is the only one we guarantee holding for the ’15-’16 school year. We occasionally hold an additional application period in the summer and/or fall. We will let you know by the end of March if your family is accepted. We will not review your application unless you attend an open house. This year, our open house dates are Mondays 2/23 and 3/9 from 10 a.m. to noon at Knox Church in Ann Arbor. (More information on open houses and how to R.S.V.P. is below!) Class offerings for Fall 2015 Fall classes are posted on our website a few weeks prior to sign up. To get an idea of possible offerings for the Fall, you can talk to a program planner at an open house. Meanwhile, our Sequence Subjects document explains how we offer courses in literature, history, and science on a regular cycle and lists other classes we offer yearly. Application Processing HSC gives priority for acceptance to families with older students, and we evaluate all applications using a detailed priority system that takes many factors into consideration. We want to be up front. We don’t usually accept more than one or two families per year with no middle or high school students. If you have a younger family, you will certainly want to explore other options. Click on Home School Support for contact information on similar groups in the area. If you decide you would like to start a co-op yourself, we would be happy to give you information and a jump-start on how to do it. HSC Co-op Commitment Please read our approach to co-op service by clicking “Your Co-op Service”. On the application indicate your job preferences. Space is quite limited and we are looking for members who can contribute to specific needs. So, please fill this section in carefully and completely. Although we have many jobs at HSC, all members are expected to be willing to teach at some point in their HSC ‘career.’ With more than a hundred course offerings, we need all willing hands on deck! Besides the two co-op jobs, we expect all members to attend members’ meetings (usually three per year) and help with a service requirement twice a year. Money Application fees are non-refundable once you have accepted our offer of membership. Class fees vary depending on what you sign up for. To get a feel for what it might cost, go to the current schedule and create a mock lineup of classes; then, add up the costs. Open Houses As noted above, attending an open house is required. Reserve a spot by filling out and attaching Open House RSVP (Word) or Open House RSPV (pdf – scan and return) emailing it to [email protected]. If you have trouble with the attachment, type the information into an email and be sure to type “Open House RSVP” in the subject line. On the day of your open house, meet in the main lobby of Knox Presbyterian Church, 2065 South Wagner Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48103 at 10 a.m. (9:30 if you have a student visiting a second hour class) and look for “Open House” signs. Park upstairs; click here for directions. Once here, you’ll get a tour and a presentation. Please plan to attend for the whole two hours. This is an important time for us to meet you and will give you a better feel for the program. The open house is geared toward adults. However, we welcome your middle and high school students as well with an opportunity to visit classes while you meet with our team. Look at the class schedule on our home page and let us know 5 days in advance on your R.S.V.P. Please do not bring elementary and preelementary students to the open house. The Application! Below you will find our HSC application to download. Applications are due IN PERSON at the time of an open house. Bring your application, a check for $30 per child (refunded if not accepted), and a family photo to the Information Center found in the Knox lobby. We will want to review it with you (which could save you a trip later!). Additionally, some applicants decide to revise or add more to their application after attending an open house, specifically after hearing our presentation. The Information Center will receive applications from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on 2/23, 3/9 and 3/16. Click here to access our HSC application. If you have questions, please contact us at: [email protected]. Thank you for your interest in HSC! We look forward to meeting you.
