Redeemer extended a call to Pastor Brett Krause from Zion Lutheran Church in Denver, CO. Adiaphoron (ah-dee-AH-fouron; plural: adiaphora) is not a word you run across very often, but it’s something important to help you understand what it means to be Lutheran. An adiaphoron is something neither commanded nor forbidden in God’s Word. An adiaphoron is something God’s Word has no direct comment on; God does not say it is right or wrong, that we have to do it or that we cannot do it. How we design and decorate our church buildings is an adiaphoron. How we structure the way we worship is an adiaphoron. The times and seasons of our worship— these are adiaphora. Even the special services we have and our individual roles in them are all adiaphora. Lutherans do not look at adiaphora and ask, “How much can we get away with?” The Bible has some advice about that attitude: “You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.” (Galatians 5:13) Bible Study Opportunities Sunday Eckert: Gospel of Luke Terrell: Living My Faith Each Day – Managing Stress Mueller: Gospel Bible Lessons Mueller: Afternoon youth confirmation classes Monday Eckert: Once a month women’s study, 6:30 pm. Countdown to Kindergarten Friday Night Seminar UNDERSTANDING AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER FRIDAY SUPPER SEMINAR Friday, January 23, 2015 Eegee’s Sandwich Buffet Supper: 6:30pm Seminar: 6:45pm – 8:15pm Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Autism is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder in the United States. It affects 1 in 88 children by 8 years of age, with onset between 1-3 years of age. ASD often results in a child’s experiencing difficulties with social communication and relationships, along with various behavioral patterns. Given ASD’s growing prevalence among children in the United States, it behooves us as members of Shepherd of the Hills to gain a basic understanding of Autism—as staff, friends, Sunday School teachers, fellow members, etc. This will allow us to better support our parents and children as they deal with the daily life disruptions associated with this disorder. Sign-up lists for this seminar are posted on the bulletin boards on the patio and across from the kitchen. Heart to Heart: Parent Conversations In the January issue, Forward in Christ (FIC) magazine is debuting a new column devoted to parenting topics. Titled Heart to heart: Parent conversations, the new column is designed to have the feel of a conversation between parents. Each month one topic will be discussed by a diverse group of parents. Nicole Balza, FIC’s staff editor of the column, says that the editors want this column to be an honest forum for Christian parents to build each other up and support each other. An important component of that support will be the opportunity for readers to join the conversation online. Visit: www.wels.net/forwardinchrist and look for the link to the Heart to heart site. Read uncut versions of the articles, learn more about the authors, and share your thoughts and reactions.
