Stambaugh’s 3-Pointers Propel Cats To Victory
The Pinelands boys’ basketball team pulled off an exciting 53-50 comeback victory against
Barnegat on Friday, January 30. Pinelands came out of the gate a bit sluggish and trailed 14-10
after the first quarter and then the Cats trailed 23-21 at the half. As the second half ensued, the
Wildcats still seemed to lack the intensity and emotion it takes to win a basketball game. Once
again Barnegat outscored Pinelands 11-10 in the third quarter and they continued to outscore
the Cats early on in the fourth. But with two minutes left in the game, trailing by eight points,
Pinelands guard Luke Stambaugh took over. Stambaugh drained four 3-pointers in the final
minutes helping his team outscore the Bengals 22-14 in the final quarter. Guard Chris Burke
and forward Michael Saurez had huge assists on two of the Stambaugh threes. Stambaugh finished the game with 16 points and Milanj Coursey led all scorers with 17 points before fouling
out late in the fourth. The Wildcats are now 7-7 overall and 3-6 in the division.

The Lady Cats hosted Jackson Liberty on Thursday, January 29. Thanks to team high10 points from

lead by the end of the first quarter and then played the Bengals even in the second. In the second

Lady Cats Breaking Records
The girls bowling team faced off against Central Regional on Thursday, January 29 and added another win to their record. The Lady Cats beat Central 2-1. Lauren Kopf led Pinelands with a total
match score of 578 and a high game score of 199. These wins allowed the 2014-2015 girls’ bowling
team to tie the school record for wins. The Lady Cats only have one game remaining in the regular
season and they look to surpass the school wins record in that next match against Donovan Catholic.
Pinelands will then move on to the state sectional tournament where they will once again compete
against divisional rivals, Central Regional and Manchester. The Lady Cats are now an impressive
32-10 on the season.
The boys also played Central Regional and won 3-0. The boys have one game left and will finish
their season against Donovan Catholic on Monday February 2.

Senior Night Proves Victorious For The Wildcats
The Pinelands wrestling team’s match on Wednesday, January 28, against Neptune was exciting and
victorious. This match recognized the three seniors, Thomas Poklikuha, 4-year varsity starter cocaptian; Mike Heck, 4-year varsity starter co-captain; and Sam March, on injured reserve. The Advanced Sports Marketing class helped with the celebrations by orchestrating a “Sweep ‘Em and Keep
‘Em” themed t-shirt toss and candy toss. The Wildcats had everyone on the edge of their seats while the
match was kept close. But in the end, Pinelands came out victorious, beating Neptune by a final score of
41-25. Riley Stephenson (106 lbs) won by a pin at the 1:55 mark; Mike Heck (113 lbs) won by forfeit;
Nick Shano (120 lbs) won by a pin at the 1:06 mark; Brennan Richardson (132 lbs) won 14-2 by major
decision; Shane Johnston (145 lbs) won 9-4 by decision; Andrew Albanese (152 lbs) won 8-4 by decision; Thomas Poklikuha (160) won by a pin at the 5:18 mark; Jacob Mena (170 lbs) won 9-3 by decision; and Chris Neilson won 12-2 by major decision. The Wildcats then went on to face Pemberton on
Friday, January 30 but came up short, losing by a score of 51-22. Heck and Albanese both won by a
fall; Poklikuha won 12-4 by major decision; Richardson won 12-7 by decision and Mike Frezza won 71 by decision as well. The wrestling team is now 4-7. They will now face the lighter part of their schedule and hope to add a few more wins to their record.
