Lent is a season that invites us into conversion and deep personal reflection. It is a time of new beginnings, new starts and new life. One important way that the parish supports this invitation is through our ongoing Adult Faith Formation events. These opportunities give us time to reflect on our faith or some aspect of our Catholic tradition with other people of faith. Such opportunities can provide a new start, aid our reflection, or be a sign post giving us direction along the way. We hope that you would take the opportunity to participate in one or more of these events. Here are the different events we have planned—winter/spring 2015. Please check the parish bulletin and the church website for details, times and dates. All are welcome! In January and February, we complete our Christian Art Series with lectures on Church Architecture and Pilgrimage, by parishioner Aneta Samkoff. We continue our exciting Wednesday evening scripture study on the Gospel of John led by parishioner Fred Vasapolli. Parishioner, Dr. Laura Dunham, who is writing a new book on Mary, will help us experience Lent with Mary, a six week course offered both in the day and evening to accommodate parishioners. Laura will also help us find and appreciate what particular Catholic prayer practice we are best suited for in a mini-workshop, Exploring Prayer Practices. Fr. Vince will return to facilitate an evening of reflection during Lent for the men of the parish, Preparing Our Lenten Journey. And, once again the women of the parish will come together for a day of reflection. Kean University Church historian Dr. Chris Bellitto returns to focus on the Church and reform, Reforming a Challenged Church: Six Lessons From Church History. This is a timely presentation that follows the World Synod on the Family (Fall 2014), as we await Pope Francis’s visit to Philadelphia in 2015 to address the family. On Passion Sunday, our Adult Choir presents The Shadow of the Cross—A Contemporary Tenebrae Service by Lloyd Larson. Sr. Rita Woehlcke, SSJ, will join us to facilitate a workshop for all those who participate in a parish ministry, The Body of Christ at Work, as we explore what it means to work together for a common purpose or mission. Our science and faith offering is Evolution and Theological Identity which explores the relationship between science and faith, asking the question, “What does it mean to be made in the image of God if we accept that human beings have evolved?” Our goal is to update participants on the Catholic approach to the relationship between science and faith, and the Church position on biological evolution. For the fourth consecutive year, we will offer small groups and participate in Living the Eucharist, a program designed by the Paulist Fathers. This six week Lenten program introduces participants to the practice of lectio divina, a unique way to pray and experience God’s active presence through scripture. Groups start meeting the week of February 15. Today’s bulletin has an insert with more information and a way to sign-up for a small group. How will you participate? We regret any misspellings in the Mass intentions. #562 St. Ann - P.2 . NEXT WEEK’S GOSPEL ALTAR SERVER SCHEDULE February 7/8, 2015 5:00 PM 7:30 AM When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons. The whole town was gathered at the door. He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak because they knew him. Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. Simon and those who were with him pursued him and on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.” He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.” So he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee. REFLECTION QUESTION Notice that Jesus gives all of us a perfect example. Jesus does what he needs to do and then takes time to be in pray. How often do we set aside quality time for prayer? Remembrance in Your Will A remembrance for your parish in your will is a wonderful way to provide for the future well-being of your parish community.
