The team anticipated high quality competition with games against St. Johns the Baptist (who defeated us 3 times last year) and two games against unknown St. Jerome’s and St. Odilia. Strategy for the team was simple; put consistent pressure on the ball for most of the game, make them play a full court game and be patient on offense. The boys responded to the challenge. They came out strong against St. John’s on Friday night. They built a half time lead at 25-12 before pulling away in the second half with a 43-18 victory. Saturday morning’s game presented a new challenge against St. Jerome’s athletic squad that included a tall lefty at center and savvy ball handler/shooter at point guard. The team was unfazed and came out with pressure, hustler and discipline on defense. Even though the team only had a 15-12 lead at half time, they managed to get the two main stars on St. Jerome’s with four fouls. The Tigers pulled away in the second half and ended the game with a convincing 39-17 victory. Finally, the boys competed against St. Odilia in the third game of the tournament. Again with team defense and patient offense, the team built a 25-16 half time lead. The Tigers must have worn out the opponent since the team cruised to a 51-16 victory to take first place in the tournament. Overall the team played outstanding together with different players stepping up each and every game to play a significant role in the victories. With the team’s consistent and disciplined full court defense, the Tigers were able to hold their opponents to a total of 11 second half points scored in three games. The Tiger’s opponents scored an average of 17 points per game while the Tiger’s scored an average of 46 points. Great job guys. The Tiger’s ended the week hosting MPA at Mount Tabor Hall on Wednesday evening; at least we thought we were hosting. After no team showed up on Wednesday evening, we found out that they mistakenly thought it was on Thursday evening (guess folks forgot to check the website. Hmmmm) Instead of taking the forfeit, the team overwhelmingly lobbied to play the game; and we agreed to play on Thursday evening with a “special” edition of Boys Basketball. As the team decided to prepare for the MPA game, they agreed to play the teacher’s in a warm up scrimmage earlier in the afternoon. After taking it easy on the teachers, the boys started their game against MPA with their normal full court pressure and built a 29-5 half time lead. MPA, as a taller team, played zone defense for 28 minutes giving the tigers amble time to work on the multiple ways to break through a zone defense. Through patience and persistence, the Tigers continually fed the forwards for easier shots inside as well as mixing it up outside. Heyabe ended up being the high scorer inside with good feed passes from his team mates and Adley hitting three big three pointers outside for the guards. In the end, the Tigers won 52-27. The Tigers are 4-2-1 with 2 games left in the season. The Tiger’s next play on Thursday evening at Mount Tabor Hall @ 5:15 PM against Northern Heights. See everyone there. In a two day span the Tigers traveled to two out of town venues for matchups. On Sunday, the Tigers caravanned out to White Castle Coliseum on campus of IC to take on Friendly Fridley’s 5th grade squad. From the moment the Tigers took the court with the PA system blaring, “Just give me a reason” by Pink, they were ready for the competition. “We wanted to take the ball and shoot it.” said shooting guard Luke Weber. The Tigers sure did, as they dismantled the Fridley 5th graders 51-14. On Monday night, the Tigers again were away from the friendly confines of Mount Tabor Hall, but this time they journeyed to Frasatti Academy in White Bear Lake. The Tigers were taking on the recently relegated squad. Despite knowing that they would be taking on some 7th graders, that didn’t intimidate the Iron 7. “We are always prepared. We watched film, were in the weight room, and took extra shooting practice.” said, Henry Votel. Unfortunately the result of this game didn’t turn out on the positive side for the Tigers. Frasatti Academy, received a disputed bucket at the buzzer, and ended up winning by one point. “Very difficult to swallow tonight.” said an emotional Asst Jim Yanz after the contest. New Life is up next on Monday at Mount Tabor Center! 7th Grade The 7th grade boys took on fellow eastside rival, Presentation, at Mount Tabor Hall on Thursday evening. Coach Schoenecker returned from his sabbatical as a Grand Master Sudoku Expert and was well rested and ready to go. The sensation in the gym was electric, intense, palpable, kinetic, enthusiastic, fervent and focused (thank goodness for a thesaurus) and that was just from the Tiger Nation fans. From the tip-off to the final horn, the boys never let off of the intensity accelerator. Coach Shriver preaches it dayin and day-out: “On the court, you have a responsibility for yourself and your team. As one finger, you cannot do much damage, but ball those fingers up into a fist of five and the world is yours.” The first half was a back and forth game with the Tigers leading for most of it. The boys went into halftime with a 19-17 lead. Joe “General Patton” Schoenecker’s aggressive play landed him on a seat on the bench for the end of the first half and most of the start of the second half. Ted “Motivation is my Passion” Muetzel brought the team together for a pep talk “Joe’s our floor general. He’s out for now. It’s go time for the rest of us.” That was all that the rest of the team needed. They proceeded to break the will of Presentation allowing them only 6 points through the first 15 minutes of the second half. All the while, they pushed the ball up the court, ran the floor and were patient on offence to come away with a 43-33 victory. Sam “The Score-enator” Prokott lead the team with 16 points. The boys, along with the girls, are hosting a 7th grade basketball tournament this weekend at Mount Tabor Hall. Games are Friday night and all day Saturday. The next game is 5 pm on Wednesday February 4 at North Dale Community Center against St Odilia. TIGERS SWIMMING NEWS The swim team is looking good! Seed timing took place over the last two practices and went well. The first swim meet is 8 days away. Sign-up deadline is today. Please encourage your children to sign up for the meet regardless of ability. Children of all abilities will be at the meet and each one is as important as the other. The kids have a lot of fun and the team environment is great. Being part of relays is a great way to get to know the kids from other schools a little bit better as well. Hope to see a strong Transfiguration showing at the All Saints meet on Saturday, February 7th. The Tigers opened up the 2015 Tournament against St. Charles and a packed Mount Tabor Center! The fans were excited and the chants of “Let’s Go Tigers!!” could be heard from the parking lot! “We were ready for everything.” said, Lauren H. In the end the Tigers fell to the eventual champion out of St. Charles. That was the only game the Tigers lost over the weekend beating St. John's the Evangelist and Blessed Trinity. The 8th/7th grade girls took 3rd place in their hosted Transfiguration tournament. “We were happy to keep some hardware at the school, but it made us hungry for more.” said, Hayley P. On Wednesday the Tigers, lost to Community of Saints 41-21 at Mount Tabor Hall. The girls played very well but went up against a very good shooting team. “They were a tough team, but we can’t wait to get back to the court and show our fans how well we can play this weekend!” said, power forward Gracie K. This weekend is the 7th grade tournament with games at 4pm on Friday and 8am on Saturday morning. Go Tigers! They are going tonight to support Hill-Murray Varsity girls basketball team by sitting on the bench and going into the locker room with the team. The girls are very excited for the opportunity to see the Varsity team in action! T I G E R S B OY S B A S K E T BA L L N E W S 5th Grade The 5th Grade Tiger boys took a small hit their pride on both Sunday and Monday this week with two very difficult losses. At IC, we played a great game against a Fridley 6th grade team. The boys played hard and were within a point of winning the game when Nolan C. stole the inbound pass and threw up a last second shot at the buzzer. The shot was not successful but the boys should not hang their heads on a well fought game against an older team. On Monday we met our arch rivals, St Ambrose. They had been our only loss of the CAA league games this year, and unfortunately we were dealt a second defeat. After leading for much of the game, our aggressive play got the boys got into a bit of foul trouble with Nino N. and Jamie M. both fouling out late in the game. St Ambrose capitalized on our fouls and scored and impressive 9 of 13 free throws in the second half alone. We finished down by 7 points. But not to worry, the boys will likely see St Ambrose again in the playoffs and we can't wait to get the bad taste of defeat out of our mouths.
