LAS VEGAS HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES
TURNED MILITARY SERVICEMEN
ARE SURPRISE GUESTS FOR PAL PROGRAM’S 16TH ANNUAL
“BE A PAL COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY”
FEBRUARY 10, 2015
The 16th annual “Be a PAL Community Service Day” sponsored by the nationally-recognized
PAL (Partnership at Las Vegas) Program at Las Vegas High School will serve as a loving kickoff to Valentine’s Week. The event is set for the Tuesday before Valentine’s Day, February 10th.
A reception will take place at 7:00 a.m. in the Las Vegas High School cafeteria (6500 E. Sahara
Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89142) where individuals who are LVHS graduates & former PAL Program
members turned military servicemen will return in uniform to their alma mater as special,
surprise guests.
Following the reception, nearly180 students will scatter to more than 20 non-profit organizations
for a day of community service. Non-profit organizations expected to participate include:
Candelighters for Childhood Cancer
Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary
Blind Center of Nevada
Spread the Word
Three Square
Nevada State Veterans Home
Opportunity Village
East Valley Family Service
Rape Crisis Center
Saint Therese Center HIV Outreach
The Shade Tree
Make a Wish Foundation
St. Jude’s Ranch for Children
Assistance League Operation School Bell
Since 1999, PAL students have served non-profit organizations throughout the Las Vegas valley
on this special day. For example, PAL students sorted canned food donations at Las Vegas
Rescue Mission, landscaped for Nevada Paralyzed Veterans of America, packed bag lunches at
Three Square, cleaned house at Shade Tree, painted at YMCA, and helped Opportunity Village
prepare for a special event. No job has ever been too grubby, tedious, or difficult.
The PAL Program at Las Vegas High School is the oldest Career & Technical Education
program of its type in Southern Nevada. In preparation for demanding careers, PAL students
complete semester-long, weekly, unpaid internships at over 100 public and private sector job
sites, including law firms, auto repair shops, City Hall, veterinary hospitals, and pharmacies.
Student Chairmen Angelica Aniciete, Anthony Canseco, Victor Castenada, and Joseph
Gervacio have been planning this year’s event for months. “We’re going to show Las Vegas
some love!” said Canseco.
