She was launched in April 1813 from Dobbins’ shipyard at the foot of Myrtle Street and continued to sail until 1873. Porcupine served successfully in four War of 1812 campaigns, the Battle of Lake Erie, Recapture of Detroit, Battle of Tecumseh, and Defense of Fort Erie. When the war ended in 1820, the U.S. Government used her as a coastal survey ship. In 1825 she was auctioned to a merchant and continued as a commercial sailing schooner until 1873, ending her long tenure as a Lake Michigan lumber-lugger for the D.M. Ferry Seed Company. Porcupine’s importance to Erie re-emerged during the summer of 2014, when an educational donation of a fiberglass hull was made to the Erie Bayfront Maritime Center. The hull is currently being transformed into a 19th century schooner. Join us as Dr. David Frew describes the rich history of the Schooner Porcupine, including the Great Lakes coastal survey and revenue cutter services, as well as merchant sailing economy during the 1800s, and then explains the modern dream that inspired the creation of a second Erie tall-ship. *Reservations will be put into tables of 10, so please specify with whom you would like to sit. *Dietary Restrictions must be specified when making your reservation. *Due to demand, “no shows” & cancellations within 24 hours will be billed.
