Message from Club President
VOLUME 42 ISSUE 1
December has arrived and your BOD hopes all the members and their
families had a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday. I believe we can all agree that the
weather this fall and early winter has been fairly warm for this time of year. Let’s
hope that this winter we do not have any record snow falls, sorry skiers. If we could
keep it on the slopes and not on the roads you can have any amount you want. As
we move closer to the Christmas and New Year seasons, it would be a good time to
reflect on how fortunate we are, even with some of the issues we all seem to face
from time to time. I can tell from my experiences during 40 years of global business
travels and over 4 million miles flown, there is no place on earth like the United
States of America. The freedoms, the opportunities and life style we have cannot be
matched anywhere in the world. Even though we have heard how bad this country
is by some Americans, they should try and live in places where I have traveled,
places I would not even wish on a dog. So let’s take this time of year to stop for a
moment and look at the good things we all have living here in the United States
and share some joy with others less fortunate.
With the winter time comes the storage issues we have with our cars, for
us northerners, on what is the best way to manage these areas. Everyone has their
own ideas and what works best for them or what other professionals have conveyed
to them on proper storage of our cars. It, also, gives us time to review what we need
to do in the spring when we once again wake-up this beast for feeding and turn
them loose on the open roads. Even though I keep my car in our garage and start it
up on a regular basis, it does provide me with time to compile a list of things to do
when it is taken back out for its first state inspection of the New Year. I am not
sure there is one better way to handle the car’s storage; however, we all want to
ensure that come spring we have the least amount of problems when we take these
cars out of storage and back on the road. Think spring as we watch the snow come
down!!!!!!!
From the clubs stand point we do have winter activities to think about.
There is a club Valentine Dinner in February which Ron & Deb Leofsky and
Kevin & Robin Kelly have been kind enough to offer to be in charge of (more on

this in the coming weeks). There will also be the March bowling party which always has a good turnout. E-mail
notifications on both functions will be coming out as we get closer to these dates. Let’s also not forget the track time
in April at Watkins Glen which is generally our clubs first official function of the season. You are reminded that
we do not have any December or January meetings and our February Valentines Dinner replaces any meeting for
that month as does the March Bowling party. That means that the April meeting will be the clubs first meeting in
2015. Dates for all of the early 2015 activities will be provided as noted earlier. As a reminder, we are in the
planning stages for a spring trip in May which would likely be around May 6th departure and May 16th return date.
The exact route has not been determined, however, it will be a southern direction toward Charlottesville, VA and
further south in the direction of Hilton Head, SC and onto Savannah, Georgia. Once I have a better idea of the
travel areas to be visited, I will send out this information to everyone. If anyone is interested in this trip just let me
know so we have some idea of the number of members that may want to be part of this 2015 May trip and let’s not
forget that we will also be planning our annual fall trip. Please don’t forget that your annual club dues are due by
the end of January.
Your clubs BOD wants to wish each and every one of our members
lies a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and we are looking
forward to a fun filled 2015.

The annual club Christmas Party was very well attended this year, as usual. We did have our nomination
and election of officers and the one director position. Above are your new club officers. Top row from left
to right: Stuart Delaplaine, Director ; Andrea McLean, Treasurer ; Jane Anderson, Secretary ; Ted Okerlund, Director ; Fred Mackowiak, Director ; Seated left is Ron Leofsky, Vice President and Gary
Baldensperger, President.
The Officers were elected to serve a 2 year term and the Director
was elected to serve a three year term. The club Director positions
are for three years, however, they are staggered so a director position is available each year.
Special thanks for Laurel Lucas for being our club treasurer for the
past couple of years.

Road trips and neat places to drive:
Article and pictures submitted by Vic Anderson
I think we should start a list of roads driven that would be enjoyed by just about anybody that likes to get off the intestate in a Corvette. We can put the list on our web page, on our newsletter or on Facebook. I have photos of some of
these. I love road trips. I love them even more in my Corvette.
Here is my list in no particular order.
Arizona:
Start in Prescott Arizona Route 89a North to Sedona and Flagstaff, Route 89 to Navajo Bridge & 89a to Kanab UtahSubmitted to me by Guy and Norma Lombardo. I have driven this many years ago in my van, but will plan to retrace my
route in my Corvette. I would also add route 67 which takes you to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and back.
Another option would be off 89 go East on Route 160 past Tuba City then Northwest on 98 back to 89 in Utah and
Kanab. Norma sent pictures on FB and it is a beautiful area.
West Virginia:
US 219 - This adds about 3 hours to a trip south but is way more fun and scenic than going down the interstate. We
were there in July. The road surface was good, twisty, up and down with great scenery. Better than the PA section.
Virginia ,Tennessee and North Carolina:
Shenandoah National Park, Blue Ridge Parkway, Highway 441 thru Great Smokey Mt National Park. This route is a low
speed scenic drive with lots of great scenery. A side trip to Luray Caverns is worth the time. Route 129 Deals Gap between Tennessee and North Carolina. This is the “ Tail of the Dragon “ but there are many other neat roads to explore
in the area.
South Dakota: Route 240 Badlands National Park and Route 16 with side trips to Mt. Rushmore, Jewel Cave and Crazy
Horse monument. Custer State Park the Needles Highway and a drive thru Wind Cave National Park.
Colorado: Route 6 Loveland pass, Route 34 from Granby to Loveland thru Rocky Mt. NP , Route 160 from Walsenburg to Durango, and Cortez with a side trip to Mesa Verde National Park.
US Route 2 From Mackinaw City Michigan to Snohomish Washington or better yet catch Route 20 in Newport Washington at the Idaho Border to Anacortes Washington. Unlike the interstate there is very little traffic west of the Mississippi. No highway patrol or anybody else for that matter.
8
Montana: A side trip off Route 2 in Browning Montana to route 89 and the Going to the Sun Highway in Glacier NP
then back to Route 2 and a stop at Kootenai Falls before you leave Montana.
Idaho: Thompson Pass with a stop at the bar and mining museum in Murray Idaho
Washington State: US 20 as above to Anacortes, Route 20 from Anacortes to Port Angeles via the Port Townsend Ferry. This
puts you at Olympic National Park. Drive down 101 to Astoria Oregon. Another neat drive is Route 410 to Mt. Rainier NP.
Oregon: Drive Route 101 to California. An epic drive with many stops along the way.
California: Route 101 to Route 1 then Route 1 south. Route 101 has side trips to the Redwoods. Check out Jedediah Smith
State Park and Humbolt Redwoods SP. In Leggett get on Route 1. The first 25 miles down through the woods on Route 1 are a
Corvette drivers dream. Last time we had to drive it twice. Route 1 has some of the best views of the Pacific Ocean anywhere. If
you get to SF drive over the bridge and go ride the Cable Cars. Other roads to check out California route 36 and Route 3.
Winding and twisty. The Tail of the dragon has nothing that these don’t have except for the photos and the T shirts. Route 120
visit Yosemite then on to Mono Lake. From Mono Lake take 167 to Nevada 359 to Hawthorne Nevada. Do not expect to see
any other cars, but there is a neat sand dune on the North side of the road. You can drive as fast as the road surface will allow.
I have many other drives not listed that have been amazing and have photos of many places I have driven. I have been in all of the
lower 48 states. I think that Chautauqua County Corvette Club should start a “ Bucket List “ or maybe a map of all the neat roads
in the USA to drive and share the best with our members. This could be on our web page.
