As part of its Small Renewable Energy Programme (SREP), the Government
of Malaysia implemented a programme that encourages private entities to
generate power using renewable fuels and to sell part or all of the power
generated to Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd
(SESB).

The objectives of the SREP are to help increase
fossil fuel efficiency and reduce the financial
burdens placed upon TNB and SESB for
electricity generation and distribution.
The SREP recommends using residues from
agricultural activities or production processes for
fuel, because their combustion provides triple
benefits to the country: it reduces environmental
pollution; decreases waste disposal costs; and
saves money spent on both indigenous and
imported fossil fuels.
Agriculture waste, such as palm oil waste, has a
reasonable and fairly consistent heat value and
moisture content, making it a reliable biomass fuel
and a sustainable energy alternative for Malaysia.
The Solution
The plant was built with two Dresser-Rand
Guascor® SFGLD 560 biogas generator sets as
part of a biogas capture and utilization project
using the palm oil mill effluent (POME) for the
generation of biogas. Malaysia-based Veolia
Water Solutions & Technology is supplying the
technology to capture the biogas.
Waste water from palm oil production is collected
in closed tanks, whereby the biogas produced
by the decomposing water is combusted in a 2
MW biogas plant. It can then be used to produce
sustainable energy.
