Success stories
Arts Council
A partnership of cultural organisations and children’s services providers, led by East
Sussex County Council have received 75,000 funding from Arts Council England for a
two year programme of arts and culture for very young children (0-2) and children with
special needs, and a creative programme of professional development for cultural
organisations, early years practitioners, and families.
Open Sesame builds on the success of the previous Open Sesame partnership project
managed by Culture Shift (2011-13) and will include:






Partnerships between children’s centres, museums and libraries in areas of need
(Eastbourne, Hailsham, Bexhill (Sidley), Hastings and St Leonards in the first year)
A series of participatory events for families and young children, ‘Sorted’, devised by
Octopus Inc, to be adapted and developed for children with disabilities
New immersive, tactile and multisensory spaces specifically for under 2s, to be
shared in museums and libraries along with audience development activities and
interactive workshops
A programme of professional development for early years practitioners and cultural
organisations enabling them to extend their knowledge of working with under 5s,
including a series of Creative Practice sessions with Octopus Inc, and a Level 4
course at University of Brighton in ‘Nurturing Possibility and Creativity in Early
Years’
The opportunity for a group of young parents to pursue Arts Award, improving their
confidence in learning and parenting, helping them achieve an accredited Award
and equipping them with skills to engage creatively with their children
Academic research led by the University of Plymouth
This programme will be managed by Culture Shift and delivered by Octopus Inc with
and on behalf of East Sussex County Council and a range of cross-sector partners
from Early Years, museums and libraries, heritage, the arts and universities.

Heritage Lottery Fund - Windmill Hill Windmill Trust
A trust which helps protect and preserve a historic windmill has been awarded an
£80,800 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
It will be used to restore Windmill Hill Windmill to working order where it will once again
grind flour.
The project will be led by volunteers from the community and is due to start in autumn
2015.
The machinery, the sweeps, the unique patented governor designed to control the
speed of the sweeps and the original outside stairs for easier visitor access to the
trestle (first) floor, will all be restored.

The restoration will be documented by members of the local photographic society who
will mount exhibitions in the area, and a historian will research the story of early millers
of the windmill.
As a result of the restoration there will be numerous opportunities for volunteers to
witness, experience and keep alive the practice of operating a windmill and producing
stone ground flour.
The Windmill at Windmill Hill, was built in 1814 and is a Grade II listed building. It is the
landmark that gives the village its name and is the largest post mill in the UK. The
structure was authentically restored and opened to the public in 2006 as an exampleof
the country’s industrial heritage. It is one of the few remaining windmills of its type in
Sussex. Windmill Hill Windmill Trust is a registered charity, established in 1995 to
promote its restoration and preservation.

Male Rape Support Fund
The £600,000 government fund was the first one dedicated for male victims of rape.
Its aim is to provide online information and face-to-face support at centres. Twelve
charities were recently awarded a grant over two years, one of them is Mankind in
Newhaven.
Mankind will receive £68,296 over two years, enabling them to increase their capacity
by a quarter and improve services.

Sport England invests in clubs and projects across the country to create a great
environment that encourages more people to play sport.

Veolia Environmental Trust
Veolia Environmental Trust have recently made two awards in East Sussex, which are
summarised below.
Hadlow Down Playing Field Association
Veolia have awarded a grant of £18,894 to Hadlow Down Playing Field Association to
fund the installation of a drainage system for the popular pitch.
The pitch lies on Weald clay. Without adequate drainage, this leads to water-logging in
the winter and rock-hard conditions during the summer, leading to the frequent
cancellation of football matches and practice sessions.
They will now start working with the playing field association to finalise the details of
their project, including the start date, so it can get up and running as soon as possible.
The Hadlow Down Playing Field Association exists to provide a sport, recreational and
community space not only for the residents of the parish but for any others outside its
boundaries. The playing field consists of a large football area for young people, a
cricket pitch for both adults and young people, a play and picnic area – public access
is unrestricted.
Pevensey Memorial hall
Veolia have awarded the hall’s management committee a grant of £53,000 towards the
first stage of a two-stage project to install a new roof and overhaul the hall’s ceiling. In
recent years the roof has leaked during heavy rain, meaning that buckets were
deployed to reduce the risk of falls and damage to the building.
They will now start working with the hall’s management committee to finalise the
details of their project, including the start date, so it can get up and running as soon as
possible.
Pevensey Memorial Hall seeks to facilitate local community activities at an affordable
cost. Current regular users are: Pevensey and Westham Playgroup1st Pevensey
Guides and 1st Pevensey Brownies, Four local dance groups including ballroom and
modern Pevensey Short Mat Bowls Club Community Bingo. The hall is also frequently
used on a non-regular basis by other clubs and organisations and by the local
community for private functions.

Awards
Awards for Young Musicians
Awards for Young Musicians awards grants between £200 to £2,000 to support
musically talented young people between the ages of 5 and 17 years, who come from
lower-income families.
Funding goes directly to suppliers rather than individual families and can be used to
fund private music lessons, course fees, equipment costs, and travel expenses related
to courses and lessons. Young people should be recommended for this scheme and a
Music Teachers Reference Form, a Recommending Organisation’s Reference Form
and a Headteacher’s Reference Form must be completed. Auditions will be called for
those applying for larger sums of money.

Charlemagne Youth Prize
The European Charlemagne Youth Prize aims to encourage the development of
European consciousness among young people, as well as their participation in
European integration projects.
The Prize is awarded to projects undertaken by young people which foster
understanding, promote the development of a shared sense of European identity, and
offer practical examples of Europeans living together as one community.
The prize for the best project is €5,000, the second, €3,000 and the third, €2,000. As
part of the prize, the three final laureates will be invited to visit the European
Parliament (in Brussels or in Strasbourg). Also, the representatives of all the 28
national projects selected will be invited to a four-day trip in Aachen, Germany.
The prizes for the best three projects will be presented by the President of the
European Parliament and representative of the Foundation of the International
Charlemagne Prize of Aachen.

Biffa Award
Due to the high number of applications being received, the Biffa Award Board has
made some slight changes to the eligibility criteria, as follows:
As of the 2nd February 2015, Biffa Award will introduce a time limit of one year from the
final payment before a new application for the same site can be submitted through
either the Small Grants Scheme or Main Grants Scheme.
In addition, with immediate effect, Biffa Award will not accept a resubmission of an
application for six months from the rejection/withdrawal letter date.

European Structural and Investment Funds 2014-2020: from
policy to practice - how will the Voluntary and Community
Sector engage in the new Programme?
The National Council for Voluntary Organisation recently hosted a national event for
the voluntary and community sector to provide an update on the European Structural
and Investment Funds 2014-2020 programme which is due to start in 2015.
The aim of the event was to provide participants with an update on the policy
developments of the European Structural and Investment Funds 2014-2020
Programme as well as with an opportunity to hear about the main entry routes into the
Programme from the Opt-in and Co-financing Organisations.

Grow Wild UK: FREE seed kits
The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew have teamed up with Lemos &Crane to share
thousands of free seed kits so groups around the country can transform their local
spaces into beautiful, inspiring and colourful wild flower havens.
This is part of one of the UK’s biggest-ever seed sowing campaigns, helping to create
over one million square metres of wild flowers for spring 2015.

Guide on EU Project Development and Management
As a lot of European Programmes will be opening in 2015, we are pleased to let you

The guide was written by Emilie Hochart who did a 6 months placement with us and
who was leading on the international section of Funding News during that time.

Power to Change – new fund for social enterprises
Power to Change is a new trust, set up with a £150 million Big Lottery endowment to
support the development of sustainable community-led enterprises. The fund will is
expected to open early 2015.
Power to Change, is inviting Community led enterprises to get involved now by
registering their enterprise on the Enterprising England map. This will ensure they are
kept up to speed with the initiative.

Training
Big Lottery - Awards for All webinar training
Big Lottery’s Webinars are interactive seminars run over the internet. This training
provides an opportunity to learn in a place that suits the applicant without the expense
and time of travel. It will give support and guidance on applying for funding and top
tips to presenting a project.
Webinars are offered weekly at 3pm on Thursdays, and last approximately 40 minutes
to an hour. There is the opportunity to ask questions throughout the presentation
through a live chat panel.
Once you have registered, you will receive an e-mail approximately 1 day before the
webinar is due to take place. This e-mail will contain a link to join the webinar and a
handy guide to getting set up correctly.

Government
Listed Places of Worship: Roof Repair Fund
This is a new £15 million one-off grant from the Department for Culture, Media and
Sport (DCMS) for urgent repairs to public places of worship across the UK. The aim of
the fund is to ensure historic places of worship can remain open for commemoration,
services and other community functions and events.
Organisations and congregations of all faiths and denominations across the UK that
are responsible for maintaining and repairing listed places of worship can apply.
for grants of £10,000 to £100,000. Match funding is not required, though welcomed.
To be eligible, applicants must:


Be a formally constituted organisation, such as a Parochial Church Council
Be responsible for maintaining a place of worship that is listed and used solely or
mainly as a place of worship within the UK
Funding is to be used to help meet the costs of urgent repairs to roofs (eg, coverings,
timbers, ceilings and vaults) and rainwater disposal systems (eg, gutters, valleys,
hoppers, downpipes, gullies, drains and soakaways).
Some funding is also available to help with the cost of repointing of high level masonry,
but only where part of a wider project to repair a roof and where the additional works
are necessary to prevent rainwater entering the building.
The repair work must have been identified in a recent professional report as being
necessary within the next five years.
The next deadline is 30th January 2015 (12 noon).
Awards are expected to be allocated by the end of March 2015.

Readiness Fund
Investors want to know the social impact that organisations will make before backing a
venture with their money and this is often a decisive factor when they consider their
investment.
Without the right systems and knowledge many worthy social ventures struggle to
show how their impact can be measured. This new fund aims to solve the problem by
offering support from experts to help organisations to show the impact they make.
Managed by the Social Investment Business for the Cabinet Office, the money will
allow ambitious social ventures to access grants to help them manage their
performance and increase their social impact to attract more investors.

Grants between £15,000 and £150,000 will be available until late January 2015 to help
the organisations to build their infrastructure and skills and showcase their impact.
Organisations must fit certain criteria to be successful when applying to the fund.
These include being focused on tackling social problems, demonstrating a strong
commitment to securing investment or to delivering public or private sector contracts,
and being able to complete the work plan within a maximum period of 3 months.

Sportivate
Sportivate offers a wide variety of sporting activities for free or at hugely subsidised
rates to young people aged 11-25 across Sussex.
The four-year nationwide campaign to continue the Olympic Legacy, provides
youngsters with 6-8 weeks of coaching in a range of sports and guiding them into
regular participation.
Active Sussex invites applications from organisations that would like to apply for
funding to deliver activities. Active Sussex have awarded funding to over 500 projects
in Sussex with the average amount per project being £1,500.
Applications for Year 5 Phase 1 Funding are now open. This is for projects who would
like to deliver between April and September 2015 – the deadline for applications is
Sunday 25th January 2015.
They are only accepting applications that target 16-25 year olds and/or that target at
least one of the four priority areas below for this particular phase. If you would like to
engage with young people within the ages 11-16 you must target at least one of the
four priority areas below within your application:




Inactive Young People *
Women and Girls
Young people aged 19-25 years
Disabled young people
*Those young people who, when registering for Sportivate, state that they aren’t yet
doing once a week participation in sport.
If your application is successful you will be expected to attend an induction which they

Youth Voice
If you would like to actively involve young people in having a say over what happens in
your area (or around a specific issue) then your organisation can apply for anything
between £500 up to £2,500 to establish (or develop further) any kind of new 'youth
voice' group.

What is meant by 'youth voice' group
An organised group of young people (in this case any age group between 11 and 19
yrs) who represent the views and opinions of their peers. It can be about what
happens in a geographic area or it can be about a specific issue.
If you already support a 'youth voice' group (includes youth councils, forums, youth
mayors, youth steering groups, youth campaign groups etc.) then you may bid for
some of this money to help develop it further (e.g. training days, recruitment events,
campaign issue, specific consultation etc.)
Proposals welcome from any kind of constituted voluntary, community or not-for-profit
organisations and Town, Parish, District or Borough councils operating within the area
covered by East Sussex County Council.

Lottery
Heritage Lottery Fund – First World War Then and Now
First World War then and now provides grants of £3,000–£10,000 for community
projects which explore, conserve and share the heritage of the First World War. You
can apply at any time and the application form is really straightforward.

Sport England – Protecting Playing Fields
Playing fields are one of the most important resources for sport in England but many of
them are waterlogged or in a state of disrepair, so Sport England are investing
£28million of National Lottery funding into improving community sports fields.
The programme is being delivered via eight funding rounds with approximately £4
million being awarded to projects in each round. The first six rounds of funding has
benefited 399 projects who have been able to either create new natural turf pitches or
improve existing ones that needed leveling or drainage works.
Protecting Playing Fields is currently an annual programme to align the awards with
the time of year that works can be undertaken. Round 7 is now open and is set to
close on 9th February 2015 at 5pm. Decisions should be made by the End April/ Start
of May 2015.
Round 8 will open on 14th September and close on 2nd November 2015.
Community organisations can apply for £10,000-£65,000 and Local Authorities
£10,000-£100,000 (30% partner funding required for education establishments and £
for £ for statutory bodies).

The Archer Trust
The Archer Trust supports small charities, working to benefit people in need. If you
meet the following criteria, they may be able to help you:



You are a small UK charity for whom a grant of between £250 and £3,000 will
make a big difference
In one way or another, you provide aid or support to a defined group of needy or
deserving people, for instance those with physical or mental disabilities or the
disadvantaged
You are competently run and can support your application with up-to-date accounts
The Trust prefer to support organisations working in areas of high unemployment and
deprivation. They favour charities which make good use of volunteers. The Trust
support projects both in the UK and overseas, but for overseas projects only via UK
charities which can ensure that funds are being well used.
Applications can be submitted at any time, however replies may take some time
because the trustees only meet twice a year, normally in March and September.

Architectural Heritage Fund (AHF) - Project Development
Grants
AHF awards grants up to £25,000 to cover some of the costs of developing and coordinating a building project and taking it towards the start of work on site. Registered
charities and not-for-profit organisations are eligible applicants.
The building must be listed or in a conservation area, be at risk (structurally,
financially, functionally etc), and be capable of being used again. The fund particularly
favours supporting those responsible for buildings who have been unable to find viable new use for the building. The funding may support professional fees and go
towards project organiser fees.

Bedgebury Foundation
The Foundation objective is charitable grant making towards the education of young
people (under 25) and adults who teach young people. Due to high demand awards
are only available to those who live or have had their secondary education in Kent and
East Sussex.
Individuals such as school children,students, clergy, teaching staff, teaching
assistants, young people who are unemployed or young offenders.
Supporting applicants where the lack of funding is likely to be the main barrier to
success. Grants will be awarded to those in the greatest financial, mental or physical
need and will not be for mainstream education including fees for degree courses.

Big Venture Challenge
Operated by UnLtd, with funding from the Big Lottery Fund and the Millennium Awards
Trust, the Big Venture Challenge is designed to help the most ambitious social
entrepreneurs successfully scale up their ventures.
It is looking for 40 social entrepreneurs coming from four cohorts. Two thematic
cohorts of 10 ventures will cover the themes of Employment and Young People and
Education. A regional cohort of 10 will take ventures from the South West and East of
England. There will also be a general cohort open to ventures across the country.
Applicants may apply for any amount of between £25,000 and £100,000. In return the
sponsor will take a 5% share of incremental revenues for two years. Winners will also
receive access to one-to-one business support and mentoring and networking
opportunities, designed to keep pace with high growth social entrepreneurs.

Boshier - Hinton Foundation
The Boshier-Hinton Foundation exists to improve quality of life for people with
disabilities or learning difficulties, and their families. They do this by making grants to
individuals or their families; institutions providing facilities and advocacy for children
and adults with special educational or other needs; registered Charities and local
community charities.

The Founding Trustees are experienced in working and caring for children and adults
with special needs and their families. It is also their experience that funding for projects
to promote the welfare of individuals and groups of individuals continues to be difficult
to obtain as grants have become more restricted and limited in recent years. The
purpose of this Charity is to identify areas of need and make appropriate grants, where
possible.

The Chapman Charitable Trust
The Chapman Charitable Trust focus their new grants in two areas:

Activity, health and well-being, including research
Culture, the natural environment and heritage
They also make grants for care, the community and counselling.
Most grants are between £1,000 and £2,000. The trustees meet twice a year, usually
around the end of March and the end of September, when all applications received by
the 1st of those months will be considered.

Downlands Educational Trust Grant
Charities and non-state schools in Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Kent, Surrey and Sussex,
whose beneficiaries are predominantly children with special educational needs can
apply to the Downlands Educational Trust for grants towards the cost of particular
items of equipment and other specific projects, including training courses. (The
average value £1,800).
The trust particularly welcomes applications from charitable schools whose intake
comprises dyslexic or autistic pupils or those falling within the autistic spectrum.

Innovate UK Innovation Vouchers
Applicants can claim an UK Innovation Voucher of up to £5,000 towards the cost of
expert advice if they are running a small enterprise or considering setting one up.
Applicants can apply if they meet the following requirements:

They need specialist help to meet a business challenge
It is the first time the applicant has worked with the knowledge supplier
The Innovation Voucher scheme gives access to a wide range of expert suppliers, and
encourages businesses to pursue fresh knowledge that can help their enterprise to
grow and develop. That could include advice on an innovative idea, learning more
about using design within the business or how the applicant should make the most of
intellectual property.
The deadline for applications is 21st January 2015.

Momentum Music Fund
Momentum Music Fund awards grants between £5,000 and £15,000 to talented artists
and bands to help further their careers.
Grants can be used to assist with any activity that significantly contributes to the
development of an artist or band. This may include, but is not limited to, any of the
following activities:





Development of new material
Touring/Key live dates (UK only), eg paying for travel and accommodation, session
musicians, etc
Recording
Marketing
Anything else that will help the applicant to develop professionally and creatively
The Fund is open to applications from artists and bands in England that are at a crucial
point in their development, with the potential to significantly further their career within
the next two years.
Applications can be submitted by the artists themselves or those who are working on
their behalf, e.g. a manager, an independent label or publisher.

NFU Mutual Charitable Trust
Charitable groups and organisations can apply for between £1,000 and £20-30,000 for
projects which focus on the education of young people in rural areas and the relief of
poverty in rural areas. The NFU has also recently decided to make awards to larger
initiatives which would have a significant impact on the rural economy.

Post Office Community Branch Fund
The Post Office Community Branch Fund helps secure the long term future of
branches which have become the crucial "last shops" in their area, offering millions of
people unrivalled and easy access to services such as mails and high street banking.
Applications for funding of over £3,000 will be reviewed by a panel including
representatives of the National Federation of Subpostmasters (NFSP). Applicants
intending to submit an application for £10,000 or greater are required to contact Post

Prince's Foundation for Children and the Arts - Start
Programme
Children and the Arts Start Programme supports cultural organisations who are
developing and delivering arts enrichment programmes for state primary and secondary school students who do not have existing links to cultural venues and are from
deprived areas.
The Programme grants up to £15,000 per project in years one and two and a
maximum of £10,500 in year three.
Applicants should be not-for-profit organisations, including councils and others that are
not arts venues but are working in partnership with an arts venue. Programmes
should:




Introduce young people to the arts
Inspire them to learn more
Enhance their experience through critical analysis and participation
Encourage them to create their own art

The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust, awards grants between £1,000 and £18,000
to individuals living and working in the UK to fund further training, study or experience

Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys - Stepping Stones
Grants
Grants up to £20,000 are available to charities working to significantly improve life
outcomes for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys is a charity funded by Freemasons which
aims to relieve poverty and advance education for children and young people. The
Stepping Stones scheme aims to help reduce child poverty by breaking the link
between the lack of access to education and the cycle of poverty. The scheme
supports the most disadvantaged children by providing grants to other charities which
undertake work in this area.
The maximum grant is £20,000 for one year and £30,000 across a two year period.
About 15 grants are given in total each year, two or three of which are maximum
grants. Match funding is not required.
Applicants must be:



Engaged in work aimed at reducing child poverty/breaking the cycle of poverty
through education and education-related activities
In a position to significantly impact life outcomes for young people
Able to demonstrate their understanding of the regional or national context in which
they work and the root causes of the issues they wish to tackle
The funding (full or partial) is to be used for specific programmes, initiatives and oneoff/specific overhead costs and will cover projects, salaries or core-funding.
There is a two stage application process. Interested charities should submit a onepage initial enquiry that includes the charity’s registration number, details about the
main area of work, the amount of the grant requested and a description of the
programme or project that the grant would be used towards, including its location. Email or post this initial application.
Applications that most closely match the Trust’s eligibility criteria will be sent a full
application form. There is no specific deadline for the one-page initial enquiry, but this
should arrive at least one to two weeks prior to the deadline for the full application
form.

Weaver's Company Benevolent Fund Grant
The Weavers Company Benevolent Fund grants to £15,000 to support local
organisations undertaking projects for young people who are vulnerable and at risk of
becoming involved with crime.
The scheme particularly wishes to fund projects that work:

they are given every possible chance to meet their full potential and to participate

INTERREG V France (Channel) England Programme
The opening of the first call is to take place at the end of January with the deadline for
the call happening towards the end of March. With regards the technicalities of the first
phase application this is to be a fairly substantial piece of work, not simply a ‘summary’
of what you wish to do. Here are some of the issues that will need to be addressed in
the first phase:

If the first phase is approved, the 2nd phase full application form can then be submitted.
The deadline for this submission is again, not yet known however is likely to take place
in late spring/early summer with approved projects likely to start in Autumn time.
If you are interested in applying, the first thing to do is to read the cooperation
programme which you can find here. This will give you the priorities and output and
result indicators expected, so you can then see if your project fits into one of these
categories. Do please bear in mind that this is still a draft version and will only be
finalised once the European Commission has approved it. However it is unlikely that
there will be major changes made to the document.
A project concept form is now available and has a 2 fold purpose. The first is to fill out
if you are looking for partners, (which facilitators can send round to their networks) the
second reason is to fill out and send back to a facilitator to check that the project idea
is on the right track.
