It starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Riverview Cafe. Somewhere in between the gym and the meeting, you'll likely see some yearbook staff members selling yearbooks. (More on that as you continue to read this.) So be sure to come on out to the school Thursday night to support our teams, the yearbook staff and our PTSA organization. SCHOOL BASED DECISION MAKING COUNCIL Meetings (usually) 3rd Thursday of each Month @ 4:00 at SSS Next Meeting: February 19 (Riverview Café) Greg Lawson – Chairperson Penny Howell – Parent Member Nanita Oldham – Parent Member Shane Smith – Parent Member Lori Denton Keyana Brown – Teacher Member Jeremy Howard – Teacher Member Sarah Kennedy – Teacher Member Stephanie Starkey – Teacher Member Counseling Corner Amy Young This quarter we will be focusing a lot on bullying as we get ready for our annual anti-bullying week. Small groups wrapped up before the holiday break and more will start this quarter. If there is a barrier to learning that your child is struggling with please contact Mrs. Denton. Small group topics are anger management, friendship, anxiety, divorce, etc. Mrs. Young will be on maternity leave the first part of the quarter. We look forward to her return! We also have a “Bully Box” that is outside Mrs. Denton’s office. If students are aware of bullying that is occurring within our school, they can make a note of the details of the bullying and place it in the box. The students can remain anonymous. Attendance There have been several issues regarding student attendance the school and the district are reviewing. In order to ensure that attendance is recorded accurately, we are asking that parent notes are written and taken to the attendance clerk (Mrs. Carrie Williams) or emailed to Mrs. Williams at [email protected] . Notes can also be sent in student folders in classrooms utilizing the folder system for communication. Please do not text your students’ teacher as an official notice of an excised student absence. Panther Parents, The fifth grade will be taking a trip to Charleston, SC over Spring Break. We currently have several fundraisers going on, and would like your input on our most recent one. We are in the process of publishing a "Parent-On-The-Run, KidFriendly, Economical" Cookbook! Describes just about each and every one of us Panther Parents, right? I'm certain that each of us has at least a couple of go-to recipes when we're late for a recital or ball game that our kids LOVE. So, please, take a minute, type it out, and email it to Sara Wellman at [email protected] . Then, in a couple of weeks, you'll have the opportunity to get your hands on the secret day-to-day recipes of other parents just like you. Chili’s Fundraiser Every Saturday from December 13-March 14, we will have the opportunity to fundraise through the Chili’s giveback program. If you show the voucher below, 15% of your purchase will go to providing financial support for the trip to Washington D.C. Please take advantage of this opportunity to support the trip to DC and enjoy some great food. Yearbook Sales This is the last week to buy a yearbook at the discounted price of $15. After Friday night, the cost becomes $18 per yearbook. Make sure to send in your child's form and payment to take advantage of this deal. Sales are going well so far, but to make things more interesting, if 100 or more students purchase a yearbook between now and Wednesday afternoon (the 100th day of school) a person's name (from all students or teachers who've bought a yearbook), will be drawn out of a hat, and that person will get to throw a pie in my face at the February Panther of the Month assembly. Also, the homeroom that buys the most yearbooks by Friday will get doughnuts one day next week. Again, yearbook order forms went home a few weeks ago. If you need another one, check at the front desk or email [email protected]. Panther Pride Spirit Week The yearbook staff will be sponsoring another spirit week Feb. 2-5 leading up to the final home FMS boys’ basketball games on Feb. 5. - On Monday, students can wear pajamas for Pajama Day. - On Tuesday students can pay a quarter to wear a hat for Hat Day. On - Wednesday, it will be College Shirt Day. - Thursday will be Orange and Blue Day with 8th grade night for boys’ basketball in the evening. Boys’ Basketball will be hosting 8th grade night on Thursday. The games will be at 5:30, 6:30, and 7:30. Please come out and support our 8th grade team in their final home appearance for Frankfort Middle School. There will be a Valentine’s Dance for FMS students on Friday, February 6 from 6:00-8:00 in the gym. The admission is $2.00 per student. If a student has mastered 80% of standards in core classes, their admission is free. Those students will be on a list at the gate. There will also be some concessions for sale during the dance. The following is a note from Mr. Kennedy to parents regarding the 8th grade trip: Parents, For a couple of reasons the 8th grade DC trip will be shifted to Chicago. The main issue was that in order to do the DC trip we needed to have 40 paying attendees but we were only at 22. So with that said, we are excited about the Chicago trip we have planned - we are essentially returning to the annual 8th grade Chicago trip. The total trip cost is $566 but will be reduced due to fundraising proceeds (that amount is still pending). The dates have changed slightly as well. The dates for Chicago will be as follows: departing from SSS 5/26 and returning to SSS 5/28. With this type of change there is some information and date changes we need to make you aware of. 2/4 - parent meeting, 5:00 pm, in SSS library 2/9 - Add/drop. With the change of plans, we realize some folks may want to drop or add from the list of attendees. We have blocked rooms at the Chicago Hilton and have a very limited amount of flexibility. If we have some drops we can add folks on and if we have additions but no drops we can do a wait list. 2/16 - Last day to get account current By 2/16 all accounts must be at $300 (this gives a two week grace period from the original schedule). At this time, if accounts are not current we will have to drop students from the list - I'm sorry but we cannot make any exceptions. 3/2 - Next $133 due 4/1 - Remainder of trip cost (this amount is depending on the amount of fundraiser proceeds) If you have questions or concerns you may contact me or Ms. Lane at [email protected]. [email protected] Thanks, Brad Kennedy Breakfast/Lunch Menus Second Street Elementary ************************ Lunch with the Principal Third Thursday of Each Month If you have any questions or just want to meet me, please join me for lunch. Lunch this month is Thursday, February 26 from 12:00-12:30 Dress Code: We will be conducting dress code checks during the Pledge of Allegiance each morning. If teachers feel that student dress could be in violation, they have been instructed to send students to the Dean of Students’ room and she and I will check students based on the school’s dress code policy. If they meet the standard put forth in the policy, they will be returned to class with a note verifying. If not, we will effort to get them clothing that falls within the dress policy. We will issue warnings for dress code Monday-Wednesday. Starting Thursday, we will begin issuing discipline consequences for violations. This will give teachers and students time before the KPREP test to be in the routine of their testing environment and begin working on activities/strategies to enhance learning and give students a familiarity with what they will experience and encounter on KPREP District Calendar
