She has plans to throw the shot and discus as a senior after basketball season. She also plays for the Louisiana Lady Select AAU team. “Jyar is a natural when it comes to the game,” Adams said. “She has a great IQ and makes reads you don’t teach. She has that natural feel that is similar to a Chynna Turner in size and strength, but her skill set allows her to connect from the three, score around the rim, pass like a guard and bang with the best of them defensively.” Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage, a 6-foot-1 forward from Santa Fe, New Mexico, averaged 13.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.6 blocks a game as a junior, helping her team to a No. 1-ranking in Class 4A. She has played for the New Mexico Select team since seventh grade. “Sabrina is a natural, physical, strong, very athletic and powerful player,” Adams said. “She is very versatile in her skill set, which will allow her to play like a guard in a 6-foot frame in the four and five positions in our system. She will be a great fit in our style of play and in the tempo we need to keep.” Ellie Lehne (Lenny), a 6-foot-2 forward from Byron High School in Byron, Ill., was named second-team AP All-State, second-team IBCA All-State and Big North All-Conference and scored more than 850 points as a sophomore and junior. Bonner’s points came on a 10-of-13 shooting effort, while Harden backed her with a 9-of-15 performance of her own. WSU’s Harden turned in a well-rounded statistical performance with the 21 points, nine rebounds, six steals and two assists. Kelsey Jacobs also had six steals, while Michaela Dapprich and Alie Decker had six rebounds each. Newman’s Sierra Maykus led the Jets with 10 points, while the Shockers held the visitors to 24.2 percent from the field and forced 36 turnovers. Overall, the Shockers out-shot the Jets, 45.7 percent (32-70) to 24.2 percent (8-33), and out-boarded Newman, 43-35. WSU opened the second frame by out-scoring the Jets, 7-2, to increase the lead to 42, 60-18, before the Shockers scored another five unanswered points to go up 65-18, at the 11:41 mark. In the first half, senior Alex Harden scored the first bucket for the Shockers on a driving layup, while Dapprich and Bonner followed with layups to put WSU ahead 6-0 before Newman answered with a bucket. WICHITA, Kan. -- Jamillah Bonner’s 21 points and 10 rebounds helped Wichita State defeat UT Arlington, 71-61, Saturday afternoon in front of 1,549 fans inside Charles Koch Arena. Bonner’s offensive effort was backed by 16 points from Michaela Dapprich, 13 from Alie Decker and 12 from Alex Harden. Cierra Johnson had 17 points for UTA to lead the Mavericks’ three doublefigure scorers. WSU out-shot the Mavs, 51 percent (26-51) to 44.3 percent (27-61) while the Shockers made 7-of-10 from the arc compared to UTA’s 2-of-10 effort. Decker led WSU’s charge from deep, making three-of-three attempts, while Bonner and Dapprich had two treys each. Eleven of Dapprich’s 16 points came with foul trouble as she picked up her fourth foul with 19:45 left in the second half. In the second half, the Shockers gave up two quick buckets that cut the lead to one, before the two teams exchanged leads over the first eight minutes. WSU extended the lead to 12 over the next four minutes, out-scoring the Mavs, 10-0 to take a 53-41 lead at the 9:08 mark on a Michaela Dapprich three-pointer. The teams again traded baskets over the next minute as WSU’s lead held steady at 10 points into the eight-minute timeout, 55-45. The Shockers again answered the Mavs’ offense over the final eight minutes, keeping the lead at between seven to 11 points before two Bonner free throws with nine seconds remaining gave WSU its third 12-point lead of the half. A UTA shot at the buzzer by Toma Zaleckaite fashioned the final score, 7161. To open the game, UTA held a 13-8 lead into the first media timeout at 15:50 on 50 percent (5-10) shooting, while the Shockers made just three-ofseven shots. The Shockers closed the gap to one, 19-18, on a White jumper, two Harden buckets and a trey by Alie Decker by the 13:55 mark. WSU’s Decker and UTA’s Johnson led scoring for each team with 10, and nine points, respectively, in the first half. The Shockers shot 48 percent (12-25), while UTA shot 44.8 percent (13-29). Each team had nine turnovers and UTA held a slight 17-16 rebounds lead. “The team that showed up against Creighton last game wasn’t the team that showed up today,” said head coach Jody Adams. “You have to give Eastern Washington credit, they were very well prepared. Their two best players showed up and played well and ours did not. When you let a team score 40 points in a half in our system it is going be tough to win. “We are going to get back to the drawing board and learn from this. It is still early in the season.” Junior Michaela Dapprich led the Shockers in scoring with 21 points, one short of her career-high, while Alex Harden backed her with 14. Dapprich picked up a double-double with 10 rebounds, a career-high. Hayley Hodgins led EWU with 30 points, while Lexie Nelson followed with 29 as the Eagles shot 48.4 percent (30-62) from the field. The Shockers were held to 33.3 percent (23-69) from the field for the game, up from the 23.5 percent (8-34) they shot in the first half. In addition, EWU made almost twice as many free throws as the Shockers shot, going 20-of-21 from the line, while the Shockers were 6-of-11 form the line. The 23.5 percent contributed to the 25-point deficit (43-18) at halftime. THOMAS, USVI – For the second-consecutive game a balanced effort led Wichita State to a win, as the Shockers defeated the Clemson Tigers, 63-48, at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center Saturday. WSU (4-2) finished the Paradise Jam with a record of 2-1, while Clemson (3-4) went 0-3. Alex Harden was named to the Paradise Jam Island Division All-Tournament Team. Alie Decker and Michaela Dapprich each scored a team-high 14 points. Decker finished 5-for-8 from the field and 4-for-6 from behind the arc. Jamillah Bonner went for 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Kelsey Jacobs added 10 points and four boards. Nikki Dixon recorded a double-double for Clemson with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Despite a slow shooting start to begin the second half, WSU finished the game 24-for-50 (48 percent), including 7-for-16 from downtown (44 percent). Clemson connected on 21-of-52 field goals, good for 40 percent, but only 2-for-12 from three-point distance. The Shocker defense forced 18 turnovers and converted those into 20 points. Clemson only dished out six assists as a team, compared to 17 for Wichita State. Clemson began the second half on a 6-0 run to close the gap to 34-23. WSU missed its first seven shots. A jumper from Bonner finally snapped the cold spell at the 13:54 mark. After Clemson pulled within 10, the Shockers extended the lead back out to 17 after two scores from Dapprich and a long two from Kelsey Jacobs in the corner. For the second straight game the Shockers used a quick start to build a double-digit lead. Midway through the half WSU led by 20 (29-9). Six Shockers scored at least four points in the opening half. Decker led WSU with nine points en route to a 34-17 lead at the break. All nine of her points came from beyond the arc as she went 3-for-4. Bonner and Dapprich each scored six points, while Bonner added three assists as well. WSU shot 50 percent (13-for-26) from the field, including an efficient 55 percent from behind the three-point line, hitting 6-of-11 shots. The defense was again suffocating by holding the Tigers to just 35 percent from the field, 0-for-6 from three-point range and forcing 12 turnovers. Nyilah Jamison-Myers led Clemson with six points in the first half. WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State improved to 5-2 with a 55-26 win over Arkansas Pine Bluff in front of 10,087 fans, the fifth-best attendance in history, at the annual Schoolhouse Rocks with the Shocks game. The Shockers were led in scoring by Alex Harden, who collected her second double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds. She was backed by Jamillah Bonner’s 16 points and Michaela Dapprich’s 12 points. The 26 points WSU held UAPB to in the game is the second lowest total by a Shocker opponent in history and the lowest output by a Division I team against the Shockers. In 1974-75, WSU held Sterling College to 20 points in a 63-20 win. UAPB (2-5) was led in scoring by three players with six points each — Mollie Campbell, Shami Goodman and Carlisha Walker. WSU out-shot UAPB, 35 percent (20-58) to 26 percent (11-43) and also won the battle of the boards, 40-33. After a slow offensive start, Wichita State used a 9-0 run over the final two minutes of the first half to take a 27-16 lead into the locker room, and continued pulling away as the second half began. A Harden steal and breakaway layup, and a Dapprich jumper, added to the run and put the Shocker lead at 47-22 with eight minutes remaining. WSU out-scored UAPB, 28-10, over the final eight minutes, holding the Golden Lions to 10 points in the final frame. To open the first half, WSU held UAPB without a field goal until the 15:19 mark, which tied the score at 4-4. It was back and forth until UAPB went up 12-9 at the 9:39 mark. It was the Golden Lions’ last lead of the game. Wichita State took the lead for good at 6:32 on two Harden free throws, 14-12, and started to pull away. WSU then went up 23-16 on Bonner’s threepointer and foul shot at 1:52. WSU recovered the slow shooting start to make 30.8 percent (8-26) in the first half after making just 3-of-21 to open the game, while UAPB’s shooting fell to 26.1 percent (7-27). Harden led WSU in scoring in the first frame with 10 points, while Makayla Wormley led UAPB with seven points. To open the second half, KSU tied it up, 22-22, at 19:15, before Harden completed a traditional three-point play at 18:11 for a 25-22 WSU lead. Later, WSU pulled away and a Bonner three from the left baseline with the shot clock running down, put WSU up 13, 42-29 with 8:10 left for their largest lead of the game. To start the game, KSU struck first and went up six, 12-6, on a steal and layup by Lewis, the first of three six-point leads the Wildcats would have in the first seven minutes before WSU’s offense got started. WSU battled back and went ahead by three on back-to-back Harden buckets, the second at the 6:49 mark. A Texada driving layup cut the Shocker lead to 22-20 at the 1:30 mark, which ended first half scoring. Michaela Dapprich led WSU in scoring the first half with eight points, while Lewis also led the Wildcats with eight. In the first half, KSU out-shot WSU, 38.1 percent (8-21) to 31.0 percent (9-29), while the Shockers missed eight shots under the basket and KSU missed six. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Wichita State’s late rally fell short as the Shockers, led by Alex Harden’s 19 points, couldn’t overcome a 10-point second-half deficit at No. 11 Tennessee Tuesday night. It was an emotional homecoming for WSU Head Coach Jody Adams and Assistant Coach Bridgette Gordon as the two former Lady Vols, both National Champions in their time at UT, greeted former coach Pat Summitt prior to the game. The Shockers’ Alie Decker backed Harden with 17 points, including 15 off three-pointers, as the Shockers matched the Lady Vols’ 23 second half points. The three-point deficit at the half, 31-28, was the game’s difference on the scoreboard. Harden put the Shockers on her back the final six minutes, scoring six of WSU’s final nine points, two on a steal and breakaway layup before Kelsey Jacobs hit a three-pointer in the right corner to cut the UT lead to one, 52-51 with 25 seconds remaining. UT’s Massengale hit two free throws to seal the win as WSU’s final possession with five seconds left ended in a fumble before a final heave fell short. Isabelle Harrison led UT with 14 points, while Cierra Burdick had 17 rebounds to spearhead the 21-rebound lead by the Lady Vols. The Lady Vols out-shot the Shockers for the game, 40.8 percent (20-49) to 36.4 percent (20-55). At the line, UT made 13 free throws, while WSU made the two they took. To open the second half, UT out-scored WSU, 7-2, in the first five minutes to take a seven-point lead, and extended the lead to 10, 40-30. WSU cut the lead with the help of two Decker treys and four points from Harden to out-score the Lady Vols, 13-8, until the 5:41 mark. Harden continued to shine with four more points before Jacobs’ trey with 25 seconds left. In the first half, Tennessee had just built its largest lead with six seconds remaining on a three-pointer by Middleton, but Alex Harden drove the floor for a trey of her own as time ran out to fashion the halftime score, 31-28. WSU out-shot the Lady Vols by a tenth of a percentage point, 40.7 (11-27)40.6 (13-32). Four Shockers scored a three-pointer in the half, led by Decker’s three treys. Decker led WSU’s first-half scoring with 11 points, while Burdick had 10 for the Lady Vols. Jamillah Bonner led the Shockers with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Alie Decker and Michaela Dapprich had 14 points each. Jaleesa Chapel added 10 points and seven rebounds. Overall, WSU out-shot the Bearkats, 39 percent (24-61) to 26.7 percent (1245). WSU held the Bearkats to 13 points and 19 percent in the first half to help put the game out of reach. SHSU did score 33 points in the second half to WSU’s 34 points. The Shockers defense helped cause most of SHSU’s 27 turnovers and a 10-rebound margin, 43-33, contributed to the 70-46 victory. Wichita State went on a 12-2 run to open the second half, and led by as much as 33 at the 15:20 mark. Sam Houston State cut the Shocker lead back to 19 at the 8:41 mark on Robertson’s second trey of the game. WSU answered and pushed the lead back to 27 on a Decker trey with 5:21 left. SHSU out-scored WSU 13-6 over the final 5:21 of the game, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the first-half deficit. WSU opened the game with an 8-0 run capped by a Decker three-pointer, her second in the run, forcing a Bearkat timeout at the 16:13 mark. The Shocker increased the lead to 23-4 on another Decker trey from the left side out of the media timeout at 9:54, and after both teams traded baskets, it was 25-6 with 7:50 left. Wichita State’s lead held steady until the 3:58 mark, before Bonner made two free throws to increase the WSU lead to 31-10 following the timeout. A Moriah Dapprich jumper was the last score of the first half and increased WSU’s lead to 25, 36-13, with 2:50 remaining. Bonner led WSU at the half offensively with 11 points, while Jazmin Wiley scored four to lead SHSU. The Shockers shot 38 percent (13-34) to SHSU’s 19 percent (4-21). WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State (10-3, 1-0) out-distanced Indiana State (10-2, 0-1), 63-52, on Friday night in the MVC opener for both teams. Alex Harden led all scorers with 21 points while Michaela Dapprich and Jamillah Bonner backed her with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Harden’s defensive effort included a WSU recond-tying 11 steals, the most since April Banks had 11 on Jan. 4, 2004. ISU’s Stephanie Wittman had 12 points as the Sycamores’ lone doublefigure scorer. Eight other ISU players contributed on the scoreboard. The Shockers lost the battle on the glass as ISU led rebounding, 42-37, but the Shockers helped create 21 Sycamore turnovers, including three-straight that led to baskets early in the game. Indiana State tied it up at 19:04 on a layup by Wittman at the start of the second half, and proceeded to take a four-point lead before WSU went on an 11-point run to take a 38-31 lead over the next five minutes capped by a Bonner trey at the 14 minute mark. Indiana State tied it up again with a 6-0 run at the 9:02 mark with a jumper in the paint by Grier but the Shockers took the lead again and built it to seven at the 2:36 mark on a Jacobs layup.
