JANUARY 20 1 5 A Message from Principal Klase Dear Parents, At this busy time of year it is very easy to get caught up in the frantic race that has become the pace of our present day culture. Although the evergreen Christmas tree, Santa Claus and presents have become a symbol for Christmas, we hope your holiday celebrated the real reason for the season, giving and receiving. The real reason for the season is to reflect on the special gift (His Son) that God has lovingly given us and to receive this gift with reverence and appreciation. It truly is the season for giving and receiving. May 2015 find each of us better able to lovingly give and to receive, and to understand more fully the miracle of God and the gifts he gives us. During this New Year, be assured of my prayers for each of you, members of our St. Louise de Marillac School family. Peace to Each of You, Mr. Klase parents, volunteers, and The Forensics Team participated in their first tournament of the year on Saturday, November 15 at St. Margaret’s School. The team placed first receiving 17 First Place awards and 11 second place awards. The St. Louise de Marillac School Forensics Team is available to 7th and 8th grade students. Forensics is a public speaking activity in which the students compete interscholastically with Catholic, private and public schools in the Southwestern Pennsylvania State Forensics League. A typical season includes three regular tournaments held on Saturdays in November, December and January. The season concludes in February/March with the Finals Tournament. Students may choose to compete in one of the following categories: poetry, prose, drama, declamation, impromptu, extemporaneous speaking, and multiple reading. The Forensics Team is very proud of its most recent success during the present season by capturing “back to back” First Place Awards in the first two tournaments of the season. rd th The 3 competition of the season is January 24 and will take place at St. Louise. At the competition this weekend the team is striving for a three-‐ peat 1st Place! DRAMA CLUB A FAIRY TALE CHRISTMAS C AROL The St. Louise de Marillac School Drama Club presented its first production of the new school year on Friday, November 14. The cast and crew worked very hard to make A FAIRY TALE CHRISTMAS CAROL a great success. The club will be on “hiatus” until January when auditions will be held for the spring musical. The two productions under consideration are ALICE IN WONDERLAND or THE LION KING JR. Stay tuned for more information after the holidays. Yearbook News The St. Louise de Marillac yearbook is in need of any photos you have from parties, sporting events, class outings or hanging out with STL friends. This is the best way to get your photos in the yearbook. Our yearbook photographers can’t be everywhere….so we need your help. You can download the Replayit phone app from the App Store. All the photos will be placed in the time capsule and those not used in the yearbook will be here for you to view after publication. You may also send them directly to Melissa Shaughnessy c/o yearbook. If you mark the envelope or pictures with your child’s name and homeroom, they will thbe returned to you. Deadline for submission is February 15 . Yearbooks are also available for sale ONLINE only. You must reserve a copy of the yearbook to receive one at the end of the school year. If you aren’t sure if you already ordered, please contact Melissa Shaughnessy at [email protected]. Grandparents Day On November 7th, the sixth grade students and their grandparents/VIP guests gathered for a very special mass and luncheon. The theme of this year’s Grandparents Day was “Grandparents Anchor Generations”, building on the Gospel theme for this year of Hope, as symbolized by the anchor, and the impact grandparents have on the moral compass of generations to follow. The sixth graders (dressed in their Sunday best) met their grandparents/VIP guests at the church for Mass. After Mass, a luncheon was provided followed by a special program honoring the Grandparents. Each sixth grader presented their grandparent or VIP guest with a “grandy” award. The students paid special tribute to their grandparents who served in the military with a medley of Military Anthems. The program concluded with the song, Anchor by Hillsong. It was a beautiful song echoing the theme that above all our hope in the cross is the anchor for our soul. The chairpersons would like to thank all the sixth grade parents who helped make the day a success, Father Joe, Mr. Klase and Mr. Fincham. A special thanks to Mr. Wagner, Miss Aikens and Mr. Sabol all they did to prepare the sixth graders for this special day. Local middle school teacher Zee Ann Poerio received a McDonald’s MAC Grant for $500 to help bring a hands-‐on robotics project into science classrooms at St. Louise de Marillac School in Upper St. Clair. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the MAC Grant program, which supplements regular classroom lesson plans with activities the school budget may not allow. Every school year, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grade teachers apply for grants of up to $500 to fund interesting and educational projects. The MAC Grants program provides financial support so teachers can bring hands-‐on tools into the classroom to engage their students in innovative ways. Poerio is one of many local teachers selected to receive a 2014 MAC Grant. The $500 grant will help her utilize five Finch robots to teach computer science and programming. The Finch is a robot designed for computer science education that was developed at Carnegie Mellon’s CREATE lab. Students will learn how to write programs to transform the Finch into a buzzing alarm clock, a joystick for student-‐written games, a hearing test, a musical instrument, a light-‐fearing robot, a weather forecaster and much more. Recently, Poerio met one of the creators of the Finch robot at the 2014 Three Rivers Educational Technology Conference, Dr. Thomas Lauwers. Lauwers is the founder of BirdBrain Technologies LLC, and creator of the Finch Robot and the Hummingbird Robotics Kit, which were both initially designed at the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute’s CREATE lab. “Zee was awarded a McDonald’s MAC Grant for the Hummingbird Robotics kits two years ago and has been a great ambassador for robotics in the elementary and middle schools,” said Lauwers. “I know her students will enjoy programming the Finches.” Catholic Schools Week... • Sunday 1/25 – 11 am – Opening Mass • Monday 1/26 o Bus Driver Appreciation Day o Opening Assembly & Scavenger Hunt • Tuesday 1/27 6pm – SPIRIT WEAR! o Open House and Ice Cream Social • Wednesday 1/28 o Wear your Teacher’s favor color shirt day o Thank you Luncheon for Staff and Teachers • Thursday 1/29 – 12:30 pm – Talent Show • Friday 1/30 – 9 am – Closing Mass and Assembly SAME DAY ORDERS Merchant Rebate Denominations Merchant Rebate Denominations APPAREL Aeropostale 3.5% $25 DINING Red Lobster 4.5% $25 5% $25 Red Robin 3.5% $25 American Eagle Babies R Us .75% $20 Starbucks 4.5% $10/$25 Banana Repulic 7% $25 Subway 1.5% $10 Children’s Place 6% $25 Texas Roadhouse 4% $25 6.5% $25 TGI Fridays 4.5% $25 2% $10 Giant Eagle 2.5% $10/$25/$50 $100/$200/$500 Shop N Save Crazy 8 Gap 7% $25 Wendys Gymboree 6.5% $25 GROCERY J.C.
