1 RIVER CLUB REVIEW Feb 2015 River Club Community Organization Newsletter In the case of an uncontested election, the Notes from the Board As you know, our annual board elections were held in January. There were 3 seats open for 3year terms. Our by-laws read: Board will reorganize and install the new members at a meeting in January. In the case of a contested election: The Board will reorganize with the new members by the end of February. We have a number of initiatives we will be working on in the upcoming year – most are outlined in Bob Gilman’s Waccamaw Management report but the primary one involves the work on the median. The issue of repairing the neighborhood “ladder” ID sign at the front gate has moved up the priority list and repairs should be handled shortly. We had several issues that we discussed at previous meetings and they were handled late in the week. New bushes have been planted in the tree line opening near the back gate and at the front gatehouse to hide the utility boxes. The trees approved for removal along the berm on Club Circle near Bently will be removed this week. In addition, the recently cleared berm in the same area will get some final clearing and pine straw will be added. We are making plans to paint the fire hydrants in the Spring and will possibly ask for some resident assistance. We have several turn-arounds that need attention and WM will be meeting with the asphalt company shortly. Several may be enlarged and shaped to help prevent ruts, and we’ve discussed the need to level out Club Circle in those areas impacted by tree roots. We have requested new street signs and have this on our list for this year, and we’ll keep checking the individual neighborhood ID signs for repair as needed. As you may know we’ve removed trees from the median and have trimmed and shaped many of those remaining although there is still more trimming and shaping to be done. The current plan is to install new plantings in late February and early March. After the new plantings are in we’ll be adding sod and additional ground cover to finalize our median landscape project. We’ve also requested a proposal for new plantings for the back gate and will follow up to get this area renovated. Lastly, we are working with SCDOT, WM and the golf course to maintain the bike path along Kings River and the River Club. We depend on residents of the River Club to bring to our attention issues that to be addressed, and we’ll continue to work with LBTS and WM to get these issues resolved. Please forward any issue to us and we’ll keep you posted. Thanks… New Board Member Sharon Patula: My husband, Paul and I were born and raised in the state of New Jersey. Paul worked in the aerospace industry and I worked for our local Board of Education. We were active members of the community. I was vice-president of our union, and volunteered as an officer and member of our PTOs, Cub Scout leader, and Little League coach. As we started to look toward retirement we purchased a condominium at True Blue, here in Pawleys Island. We thought we would be snowbirds, then decided to move here permanently in March 2007. We began looking for a house in 2009 and purchased our home in February of 2010. We viewed many lovely homes in the surrounding developments. The deciding factor in choosing River Club wasn’t the amenities or the particular house, but the people. We met such wonderful people and made so many new friends. We have been members of the RCCO since we moved in. We love being here and hope to contribute to the quality of life we enjoy at River Club. Newsletter Note—Format Change This RCCO news letter will take on a new role supporting the website. Items of current or transient nature will be the focus of content for the newsletter. The website will include more information than the newsletter and have content slightly more static. Ray Funnye, Public Services Director, provided the following excellent status information: New Board Member Thomas May: I was bor n and r aised in Kear ny, NJ . After gr aduating fr om Seton Hall University with a degree in Marketing, I served in the in the United States Army for the next two years. Janet and I married just three weeks after my discharge in 1969. We raised our three children in New Providence, NJ. We are now fortunate to have seven grandchildren residing in Exton, PA; Charlotte, NC; and Alexandria, VA. My thirty-four year career in international ocean transportation was spent entirely with SeaLand Service, Inc. I began in a sales position in New York City, eventually assuming the role of General Manager of Sea-Land’s Latin America Division. The relocation of Sea-Land’s corporate office brought us to Charlotte, NC in 1995. While investigating coastal living in the South, we found our paradise in Pawleys Island. We settled in River Club in 2004, and have enjoyed all the wonderful amenities it has offered while benefitting from the many friendships we have developed. To All River Club Motorists Please do not drive across any median throughout our River Club community. Please back up, if necessary, to the first available turn-around and go around, or reverse your direction. LBTS and River Club will be spending a lot of money to upgrade the landscaping on the medians, including the sprinkler heads which you can't see and the community can’t afford to have the unsightly damage caused by a vehicle crossing the medians. PLEASE DO NOT DRIVE ACROSS THE MEDIANS. Previously, I lived in Arizona, Wisconsin and New Jersey. I received my undergraduate degree from Marquette University, and my master's degree from the University of Wisconsin. Joe Banyar: In both Arizona and Wisconsin I taught math in junior high. I retired in 2008 after 34 years in the classroom. During that time I was involved in many leadership roles within my school itself, the school district and the teachers' association. In1998, I earned the Teacher Merit Award from my district. In Wisconsin I was on the board of the StoneCrest Condominium association for nine years. My first position was as head of the landscape committee. My duties included overseeing the maintenance of the landscaping, sidewalks and roads. I was challenged to keep the residents of the complex satisfied with a beautiful lawn in the summer, and snow free sidewalks and roads in the winter. I eventually was elected to the position of president of the board. In this position some of my responsibilities included putting together the yearly budget, running all meetings and listening to and reacting to all resident concerns. Since moving here, many of you have probably seen me or my wife, Dalene, walking on Club Circle with our two cocker spaniels, Willy & Bella. I enjoy time on the beach and working in the yard. Having lived in Wisconsin makes me an official "Packer Backer". There have been questions about maintaining the path from Hawthorne north to Tradition. Myrtle Beach National has done the mowing along the road in the past and the only open question here is whether the SCDOT will do additional grading to allow proper mowing. This is being worked on and a call with LBTS, Myrtle Beach National and SCDOT is in the works to hopefully resolve. The maintenance of the path, while technically a SCDOT responsibility, is also being discussed. I was a bit surprised to learn that the actual board meeting starts at 9am, typically at Waccamaw Management and then moves to the LBTS Beach house at 2pm, which is then open to ALL LBTS Members. I would encourage all who are interested in what their HOA does, to attend. You can find more on these meetings by going to http://www.litchfieldbythesea.com My responsibilities on the board are security, which is an area that I am very interested in and wanted to have several areas looked into. I decided to form a Task Force to look into a number of things and our first meeting was January 7th at the Beach House. I will not try to go into the details of what we are doing, but if you want to know more, please use this link for a update on our work: http://www.litchfieldbythesea.com/security.html One other note on Communications, PLEASE make sure that you have given your most current e mail to Waccamaw Management. Your e mail is used if there are important notices to go out, E MAIL BLASTS, such as storm alerts, etc. This same e mail should be given to the RCCO, if you are a member and/or in the directory. Landscaping, I have to tell you that Vic Figlar who is on the LBTS board and responsible for landscaping is doing a great job of working with the RCCO to make the needed changes to the median in River Club and other locations within our community. It is great to see that work has and is being done with plans and approved funding to replace many of the trees that had to be removed, plant some smaller bushes and replace grass as appropriate. The replacement activities are planned to be completed by the end of February, beginning of March 2015. Bob Gillman, Ruth Leal and Diane Stern are working very closely with Vic and really doing a great job for our community. Final thoughts, please remember to use the LBTS web site, it has some really good information and links. Also, the RCCO has been working on a first time web site for River Club, you will hear more about this from our “Web Master” Mike Turner. Click here for River Club Website.
