FEBRUARY 2015
President’s Corner
by Dan Jenkins
We’re a month into the New Year, and only about
four months to the end of our club year and
banquet. There’s a lot going on for MWCC
between now and then. Competitions, program
meetings, field trips, our “I See,You See” club
project, our Birmingham Green “Service to the
Community” project, Arts Alive…. Plenty to
keep us busy as a club, and lots of time to get out
and take pictures on our own.
Winter continues. If there’s been mostly rain
instead of snow where you live, just drive a few
miles west or north and you’ll find plenty of
opportunities for pictures of (and in) the white
stuff. I’d encourage you to pick a landscape view
and photograph it during each of the four
seasons; it’s amazing how different the same
scene can appear in the Spring when the buds are
on the trees and the flowers are blooming on the
ground, in the Summer when there’s green
everywhere, in the Fall when there are reds and
yellows and browns mixed in with the green, and
in the Winter when there are no leaves and little
color, or perhaps everything’s covered in white.
We haven’t talked recently about our projects.
Many (or maybe most) of the teams for our “I
See You See” club project have taken a hiatus for
getting together during the cold weather, but
don’t let that stop you from visiting any of the
three locations on your own if the mood strikes.
As Spring approaches, we’ll all be gearing up to
get together again to photograph, or rephotograph, Henry Hill on the Battlefield, the
Virginia Arboretum, and downtown Warrenton.
In April we’ll collect one image from each
member from each location they visited; then
we’ll put them all together in a slide show to
share at the May 21st meeting. Let me know if
you’ve joined MWCC recently and haven’t been
assigned to a team.
We also will be donating photographs to the
Birmingham Green Assisted Living facility for this
year’s MWCC “Service to the Community”
project. The hallways of the facility are mostly
bare, and the staff and residents are looking
forward to having our photographs on their walls.
It would be great if each of us who are able to do
so could select at least one of our photographs
to mat and frame so we can present as many as
possible to Birmingham Green by the end of the
club year in May.
Now get out there, have fun, take pictures!

Speakers for February and march
by Steve Heap
We have two great speakers coming up at our regular club meetings. First, on February 5th, we have
Wayne Wolfersberger who will be speaking about the great photography locations that are close to us.
You don't need to travel long distances to find something spectacular - Wayne has some ideas for
interesting things to see much closer to home. From his bio published on
http://www.waynewolfersberger.com/about.html
Wayne grew up in the Washington D.C. Area. He attended local universities and graduated
with degrees in biology and conservation from the University of Maryland and George
Mason University. The use of photography to teach concepts to his classes became second
nature. Valuable experience was obtained while working for a commercial photographer and
later with the US Navy Photo Laboratory and a brief stint with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service. Wayne taught in Northern Virginia, Maryland and in the United Kingdom under the
Fulbright Program. During his years of full time teaching the sciences of biology and earth
science, Wayne found time to further expand upon his photographic skills which included
wedding photography, school groups and craft shows. Having left full time science teaching,
Wayne became an adjunct professor with Virginia Tech which left time for his pursuit of his
passion, nature photography. Wayne now is teaching photography classes during the fall,
winter and spring which allows for a great deal of traveling to prime locations for nature
photography during most of the year but especially during the summer months.
Then on March 5th, we have Don Rosenberger speaking on Abstract Photography. This is what Don has
to say about his talk: "What is abstract photography? Capturing abstract images takes a different way of
looking at the world around us; focusing less on specific details. If fact, when done well abstract
photography should appeal to our primal senses, evoking emotion through form and color rather than
image detail. Don began his photography journey in the mid to late 70’s. With the advent of digital
photography Don recalls on his website www.donrosenberger.com:
In 2005 I purchased a Nikon D70 and started down a new road as a nature and landscape
photographer. During this time I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with several
great professional photographers and many talented amateurs. I have learned much in
regard to image design, light and composition. The rewarding part is that the learning never
stops. When I make a good picture, I’m pleased, but at the same time challenged to take it to
the next level.
During this lecture we will explore a brief history of abstract art and how it has translated to
photography. We will explore many of today’s examples of abstract photography. We will discuss what
makes good abstracts, as well as specific examples of how to create your own abstract masterpieces!"
I hope to see you at these two interesting presentations!

Arts Alive 2015
by Gordon Tassi
The Prince William County Arts Council is a membership organization serving the Greater Prince William Area, including Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park. The mission of the Council is: • To promote and support local artists and arts organizations, and • To enlighten and educate audiences about the arts in the Greater Prince William Area. The Arts Alive festival is one of the Council’s important activies. The Manassas-‐Warrenton Camera Club, as part of the Prince William County Council for the Arts, will take part in “Arts Alive 2015”, a celebration of the arts organizations in the county. This is an annual event that allows arts organizations to market their activities and build support for the arts. The event will take place at the Hylton Center for the Performing Arts, on May 2, 2015, from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The club will display both print and digital images in the Main Lobby of the Center. We will also assist attendees who have concerns about their photography and/or camera’s operation. Club membership participation is essential for making this event a success. The club will display digital images from this year’s competition that received a 7 or above in a slideshow format. We also expect to display at least 20 prints, depending on their size, on our display rack and table stands. Club members will be allowed to sell their images, but we must have the makers name, sales information, and image title, and, for digital images, the maker’s contact information to handle a sale. The print images will be collected at the meetings in March and the April. All print images, 8 x 10 or up to 11 by 14 inches, must be matted with plastic eyes attached to the back of the matt for hanging them. The rules for matting are the same as those for “Nature Vision.” PAGE 5
