THE INTELLECTUAL PLAYGROUND FOR HR THOUGHT LEADERS
INTRODUCTION
The world and the world of work has changed dramatically and continues to change, bringing about the
question of where the world of work is heading and what this will mean for organisations and HR. Some
approaches are no longer applicable. Organisations need to really think about their investment in human
capital in terms of where they will come from, what they will do and how they will contribute to increased
performance. HR also needs to demonstrate the value that it can bring to the table. The HR function is
well-positioned to provide sustainable competitive advantage to the organisation through its workforce.
According a PwC Human Capital Report 2014, less than half (45%) of HR leaders are confident that they
will have the right talent to execute on the business strategy. The Society for HR Management (SHRM)
also state that managing talent and improving leadership development are the most critical HR challenges
facing organisations today and projected for the future.
The reality is that organisations around the world are facing similar talent challenges and in order to solve
these problems, requires a shift in thinking. Competition is fierce, talent supply is difficult to predict and
HR executives are under severe pressure to prove a return on investment in people. But with challenges
comes opportunity – with new thinking and advances in analytics and technology, HR is certainly capable
of great things and is able to contribute to the strategic heart of the organisation even if this means fighting
to prove its worth. The human resources function is well-positioned to deliver sustainable competitive
advantage to the enterprise through its workforce.

The best HR functions are showing that they can provide insight that will help make smarter and better business decisions through
the use of predictive analytics. However this should be analytics to support the business and not just data for data sakes. Often
data describes what has already happened as opposed to using analytics to predict what might happen and actively find ways to
address a potential problem. HR directors need to think predictive – CEOs want and need help planning for the future and not a
story of what has already happened!

IN-DEPTH WORKSHOP
PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP ONE
Tuesday, 17 MARCH 2015
Implementing a lean
approach to & through HR
FACILITATOR
Professor Norman Faull
Chairman, Lean Institute Africa
INTRODUCTION
ABOUT Norman Faull
How is lean relevant to HR? While lean is effective in improving processes, as in those for making
automobiles or insurance pay-outs, how does it engage HR? It is a body of practices and
philosophies that originated in Japan in Toyota. And Toyota claims, ‘We make people before we
make parts.’ TPS stands for the Toyota Production System, but also, the Thinking People System. If
we miss the people development aspect of lean, we miss the whole thing. In this fun-filled workshop
we will explore the essential people part of lean and HR’s key role with respect to lean in the
organisation: developing capability within HR; delivering value for the organisation and its customers;
and how results will surely follow.
KEY THEMES
KEY OUTCOMES
•
What is lean? How does it distinguish
itself from other improvement
approaches?
Understanding of lean as:
Learning by doing: is it easier to get
people to act their way into a better way
of thinking or to think their way into a
better way of acting? An HR-based game
will make this practical, memorable and
enjoyable.

to drive and embed culture change
A management system, not a collection of
tools and techniques
A vehicle for evolving a more effective
and reliable corporate culture, and one
that aligns with and supports the strategic
imperatives
Developing leaders to think and act
strategically in support of front-line staff
focused on delivering value to customers
Contributing to HR effectiveness within
the HR function and the organisation
Only learnt by doing, which means
developing capability, delivering value,
and delivering results all in the same
initiative.
Who should attend
Senior HR executives seeking to strengthen a lean initiative or to launch one either in the HR area or
the organisation as a whole.
Emeritus Professor Norman Faull is the
Chairman of the Lean Institute Africa
and formally a Professor of Business
Administration at the Graduate School
of Business, University of Cape Town.
He was among the first researchers
in South Africa to introduce innovative
manufacturing and supply chain
improvement concepts, such as
lean manufacturing, into the country.
In recent years he has focused on
implementation of lean management in
the South African public health system.
He teaches on MBA and executive
programmes at UCT and elsewhere.
He continues to research the area of
process improvement, with particular
attention to large-scale systems.

SETA grants and accreditation
requirements
Many of our delegates enquire about the
accreditation of our events. There is a
misconception that organisations qualify for
SETA grants only for accredited programmes.
This is not correct. The payment of SETA grants
is regulated by the Government Gazette, no.
9867, Vol. 570, 3 December 2012, no. 35940.
These Regulations clearly state that the SETAs
“must allocate a mandatory grant to a levy
paying employer” that has submitted a WSP and
ATR by the regulated date, has provided all the
information required in the regulated template,
and is up to date with skills levy payments.
Furthermore, the template in the Regulations
(Section C: Skills Development) allows employers
to include ALL planned training in the report; not
only accredited programmes.
