Saint Andrew Catholic Church Newtown, PA 18940 — 215-968-2262 — standrewnewtown.com February 1, 2015 — The Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time “May I see your photo ID?” That’s a question expected from the passport inspector at any given airport. But it was quite a surprise to hear it coming from my doctor’s secretary. I thought this was a sad sign of the times we live in, when duplicity is the main tool of petty thieves and terrorists in our newly suspicious atmosphere. In His time, Our Lord Jesus Christ had an ID problem of sorts, but in His case, the questioners always asked to know His identity after He did a good deed, even a miraculous one. In today’s Gospel Jesus frees a man from the ugly throes of demonic possession. But the townsfolk of Capernaum are quick to ask “What is this? A new teaching backed up with authentic authority?” It’s as close as they came for a demand to see some ID of Jesus. No surprise that in a gossipridden world, Our Lord’s fame spreads all over, a particular theme in the early part of Mark’s story. The pairing of fame with fortune that dominates the wishes of many people today is a clear contradiction of the Christian life goals. Fame has already been famously pared down by the artist Andy Warhol into a mere fteen minutes. But that doesn’t deter those ambitious for it. As for fortune, that pursuit remains ever popular. Lottery tickets are scooped up daily, with little or no thought on the buyer’s part that their deed “benets senior citizens.” They want it to benet them. Jesus, of course, seeks neither fame nor fortune. In fact, He tries His best to discourage the one and has no interest in the other. But He is vitally interested in people having the correct spiritual ID, including us. Oh yes, we have such an ID. We got it at our Baptism. On that day, our parents thought enough of us to pass on to us the greatest gift they could think of: the Catholic faith that they themselves received. A faith that so guided their lives that they knew they had to pass it on. The end result is that we know who we are without even looking at any card. We are Christ’s. And hopefully proud of it. Theoretically at least we reject the twin goals of fame and fortune as the reasons for living. Practically speaking, we acknowledge the pull of those two items on our hearts. Sometimes we forget how counterfeit they are because they appear so real. That’s when we have to face facts and reexamine our daily decisions. The great season of Lent is now less than a month away. It’s “tune-up time.” Right now we can prepare for that Lenten project. I suspect that there’s a stalwart Seraphim at the gate of heaven stafng the nal checkpoint before we enter. His “job,” if you will, is to ask us for our “photo ID.” If that’s so, then Lent is a good time to update those Christian credentials. The Possessed Man in the Synagogue, James Tissot —Rev. Leonard N. Peterson Please join us Sunday and everyday. The HOPE ministry is a community outreach program that covers all residents, young and old, living within the boundaries of Saint Andrew Church. Many of our care receivers are parishioners, but this is not a requirement. The HOPE acronym stands for Helping Other People Everyday, and that is exactly what our 250 volunteers do each day of the week. Our volunteer caregivers are all members of Saint Andrew Parish who come from all walks of life and all ages, both male and female. They are truly selfless in their love for God and their love and service to their fellow man. Our members care for the elderly, ill, disabled. They serve families who are going through a crisis and need some extra help. The tasks are varied ranging from providing transportation to Mass, doctor and dental appointments, to grocery shopping and errands. We prepare and deliver meals and visit the sick, disabled or homebound. Each volunteer is asked to perform one task every sixth week and is never asked to do anything that would make him/her feel uncomfortable. Each person can choose from a variety of tasks that are sent via e-mail or a telephone call. The members give freely of their time and talents. They give of themselves by their genuine interest for the care receivers. HOPE volunteers are God’s boots on the ground. The HOPE ministry is set up to be flexible in today’s busy world. There are 4 coordinators who rotate monthly, keeping an appointment book, and visiting and evaluating all care receivers. Volunteers are divided into 6 teams with two team leaders. Every sixth week a team leader will contact her team with all the tasks that need to be completed. Each team member can then choose a task that is comfortable for him/her. While we serve, respect and love the needs of all age groups from conception to natural death, the people we serve are often at the older end of the spectrum. They are extremely grateful for our volunteers. Knowing that they are able to get to their doctor appointments, participate in the Mass, receive meals or have someone sit and chat creates a reason for their getting up in the morning. Our care receivers’ sincere gratitude is both humbling and heart warming. Love IS our mission – to love each person as we love ourselves, to perform those little acts of kindness that mean so much to others. In doing so our ministry has become recognized in the community as one that can be not only useful but widely trusted and valued. We NEED your help to help those who are in need of assistance. Won’t you please think about joining the HOPE ministry? There is an old saying that there is strength in numbers. To stand alone for a cause is hard, but to stand with a group gives us purpose and identity. Jesus knew that. He knew that His mission would be accomplished more easily if many individuals banded together as one body to give strength and support to one another. Love IS our mission – This is our purpose. This is our HOPE ministry. — H.O.P.E. Holy Ghost Preparatory High School —Peter Taylor: Trustee scholarship LaSalle College High School —Peter Taylor: Founder’s scholarship Archbishop Wood High School —Zoe Talbot: Tuition scholarship From the Principal This week at the sixth grade class liturgy, Father Wilson spoke about service in the homily. He noted that our sixth graders have a service requirement for Confirmation but he wished they were required to do community service after receiving all of the fruits and gifts of the Holy Spirit. After Mass, I informed Father that we do have service requirements in seventh and eighth grade as well. Years ago, I realized that most of our students attend high schools with service requirements, I thought: why should we stop service in seventh and eighth grade? I spoke to the sixth graders after Mass and told them that service should become a habit. Like piano lessons and soccer games, you improve with exercise and practice. We must get into the mindset of performing community service. I told the sixth graders a story about one of our graduates who happens to be my daughter. About six times a year, she goes into inner city schools in Washington, D.C. and meets with the principals. In cooperation with the administration, she designs murals for the schools. Laura sketches out the mural on huge walls throughout the schools. She makes it like a paint by number. On Saturday mornings, a group from Hands on DC comes in and paints in the sketch. Laura’s murals are gorgeous and the students are delighted when they return to school on Monday. I have even seen one of her murals in a television commercial. Last year she was asked to paint a very large painting of the Capitol. The painting was featured in the annual banquet for Hands on DC. She was named Volunteer of the Year; the painting was hung in a national gallery and eventually purchased for a great deal of money, which was used to help pay for more paint supplies. —6— 001AND Saint Andrew Catholic Church 81 Swamp Road, Newtown, PA 18940-1537, 215-968-2262, Fax 215-579-9344, www.standrewnewtown.com, www.facebook.com/standrewnewtown Office Offi ce Hours: Monday-Friday, 9:30AM -12:00PM & 1:00-4:30PM, Monday-Thursday, 5:30-8:00PM Pastor, Rev.
