McKinley Sr. Satellite Site Volume 17 Issue 2 February 2015 February’s Volunteer of the Month is a Real Sweetheart February is a very special month basically for the businesses that ‘clean-up’ on the sale of flowers, cards, etc., but it is also a great month to spread a little kindness and love around. With that in mind we would like to honor Linda Eaton as February’s Volunteer of the Month. Linda is presently serving as President of the Advisory Council. For many, many years Seventh & Center Sts. she has been the driving force behind the 90+ Celebration of Life event and has formed her “Team 90” group of Verona (Hilltop) PA 15147 412-828-5888 Funding Funding is provided by the Municipality of Penn Hills* And the Allegheny County Area Agency on Aging Activities Calendar…..Page 11 Advisory Council….Page 3 Day/Evening Trips Jefferson Pg. 4 dedicated volunteers to host this wonderful event. You will find her writing an article for the newsletter, meeting for committees, updating the Advisory Council bulletin board, planning the 90+ event, meeting with staff on issues that may have been brought up at the Advisory Council meeting or something that a senior has brought to her for clarification, shopping for a Center event, planning posters, decorating for a special Center party, doing research on an issue, taking training to form a better Council and to keep the Center up to date, whew!!! As you can see, she is pure energy! Linda will give her opinion after she has read up on a topic and her ideas are very constructive. She works extremely well with the Linda Eaton members of the executive board of the Advisory Council Advisory Council President and with the staff. Linda is there when we need her. She is truly a Center Ambassador who is a shining example in the Community of what a senior can do and what the Penn Hills Senior Center can do for all of our senior residents. She and her sister Margie, are long time Penn Hills residents who keep up on what is going on in our Community. They have formed friendships with other Council members, Day/Evening Trips McKinley Pg. 6 seniors, and staff of our Center. We are so very happy that she decided to stay an active part of the Penn Hills Senior Service Center and hope that she will stay an active Highlights-Jefferson Road..Page 5 member and friend for many, many more years. Thank you so much, Linda, for your patience and support—you are a jewel in the Senior Center crown!!! This elected group of seniors takes their positions very seriPhyllis’ Last Minute Snippets..Pg 2 ously. They serve Senior Center Pictures...Page 9 on committees, help at Center events, work on policy and procedure with the staff, and much more. Page 2 Last Minute Snippets: By Phillis Ann Paciulli I was thinking about a promise that I made to myself and to YOUR Center participants when I first stepped into this position. The promise was to spend time in the lunchroom with you all. Well, I have failed miserably and want to make amends. So, I will be in YOUR Center lunchroom 1 day a week in the morning for coffee and conversation. You are invited to ‘sit down’ with me and talk—it will not be a one on one type of visit, but more of a “round table” discussion. This will include a visit to our McKinley site as well. I will then visit each of the programs that we have and spend a little time observing and maybe participating for a short while. This is being done in an effort to reconnect with all of you. See you on Monday, February 2nd at around 10 am! Phyllis Ann Paciulli Director of the Penn Hills Sr. Center “ I will be in YOUR Center lunchroom 1 day a week in the morning for coffee and conversation.” Editor: Jane Carr Editor Emeritus: Phyllis Ann Paciulli Jefferson Ctr. News: Lena Natalia Notes from McKinley: Mary Anne Sciullo Sr. Travel: Yvonne Walker Council Corner: Linda Eaton Contributing Articles : Menu/Activities: Michelle Pirollo Word Search: Shirley Haerr February 2015 Congregate Meals: As stated in last month’s newsletter, there have been changes to the Congregate Meals program that we have shared with you. However, as is normal, change is not easy to accept. I will try, one again, to explain it to you. Meals will not be taken from the Center—what does this mean? In the past, if you were unable to finish your lunch or if there was any extra meals or parts of the meals you were permitted to bring your own containers and take it home to finish. This is NO longer acceptable! Food safety is an important concern for ALL individuals, BUT especially for older adults who are considered a vulnerable population. If you order a meal, it is expected that you will consume the meal at YOUR Center. If there is anything left over, it is to be disposed of at the Center. If there are seconds, they will be offered to you, BUT they have to be eaten at that time. The only items permitted to be taken home are shelf-stable, non-perishable or non-potentially hazardous food items from your own meal, etc. such as whole fresh fruits, bread, pastries, cookies/ baked goods, unopened packaged items such as crackers/bread sticks and unopened individual containers of fruit, applesauce and fruit juices. There is a statement on the policy/guideline sheet regarding the ordering of an additional meal that can be taken home—that meal, which is the same meal eaten at the Center, will cost an individual between $4.70 and $5.70 (payable in advance) which is the original cost of the meal and the acceptable container in which it will be packaged—individual containers brought from your home are not acceptable and the Center would have to purchase containers from the food provider. If the person ordering that second meal does not come into the Center that day, they will not receive a refund—the meal has to be paid for and the funds to do this will NOT come from the Center! The Penn Hills Senior Service Center WILL NOT offer this at our Jefferson Road site OR the McKinley senior satellite site. The money paid goes directly to the meal provider (the company that provides our daily meals) through the Center, an account will have to be set up and an additional accounting system will have to be put in place—the Center will get NO credit or monetary reimbursement for ordering and packaging the meal for take out; so, we are not going to offer this choice. This is our FINAL decision even if reimbursement of any kind would be offered. It has been left up to the discretion of the individual Centers and our decision is NO.
