Welcome to the 75th Annual Columbus Spring
Pilgrimage – an award-winning event that has been
widely recognized as one of the best and most authentic
home tours in the South. The antebellum mansions of
Columbus are impeccably maintained and as resplendent
as ever. Many home tours feature recreated activities of
the 1800s, complete with period costumes, which add
excitement and even more authenticity to this historic
event. It’s an experience visitors will long remember!
Driving tour CDs and Columbus informational brochures
are available at the Tennessee Williams Home and Welcome
Center – located at 300 Main Street. This Victorian
structure is the first home of renowned playwright
Tennessee Williams – winner of the Pulitzer Prize for his
works, A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Participate in the second annual Columbus Pilgrimage
Half-Marathon and 5K! Whether you’re a novice runner or
seasoned athlete, this great race is not to be missed. The halfmarathon unwinds on a scenic course that takes you along
the Tombigbee River bed and ends at the historic river bridge
while the 5K loops through some of the South’s most beautiful,
historic neighborhoods.

Catfish cooking contest, live music
This year’s event – the seventh annual – will feature a day of
fun for the whole family, including a catfish cook-off, vendors,
fabulous food, cold beverages and some of the best blues
musicians in the South.
The name ‘Catfish Alley’ recalls a time in the 1800s when
African American fishermen would catch catfish in the
Tombigbee River on First Street and bring the fish to Fourth
Street, where it would be fried and sold. The aroma of catfish
cooking permeated the air; and soon, the alley became known
as a hub for thriving African-American businesses, blues music
and delicious food.
Now, nearly 200 years later, the
alley will once again be filled with
the sounds of blues and smell of
catfish cooking as thousands of
residents and visitors gather for
this festival, which celebrates the
many achievements of AfricanAmericans in Columbus and
Lowndes County.
Throughout the day, guests will
have the opportunity to enjoy
Mississippi-raised catfish, as well
as entertainment by musicians
including: the Terry “Harmonica” Bean One-man Band from
Pontotoc, Mickey Rogers and the
Mickey Rogers Band from Greenville, and Grady Champion and
his Blues Band from Canton. All
of the musicians have performed
throughout Mississippi, the South and in several European
countries.
‘Catfish in the Alley®’ is free and open to the public. Food
and beverage will be available for purchase that day, as well
as tickets for a nominal fee to serve as a judge in the catfish
cook-off.

This graveyard tour promises to be a memorable experience
for lovers of history and drama, for it is a combination of
both. Tales from the Crypt re-creates the lives of noted
personalities interred at the historic Friendship Cemetery,
the site of the Confederate Decoration Day that inspired the
poem, The Blue and the Gray.

project won the Governor’s
Award for Excellence in the
Arts and was named a national
finalist for the Save our History
Classroom Award. The students
select, research and portray the

Traditional Southern antebellum

captured at Bryn Bella. Built in
1848 by the William Cox family
and designed by James Lull, this
stately home boasts heart pine
floors, jib windows that access multiple porches, and grand top and

mind, Bryn Bella was once a 5,000-acre cotton plantation and is still

Named after the stately Magnolia
tree in the front lawn, this Greek
Revival house was built in 1853.
The front door opens to an
oversized hallway that runs from the front door to the back of the
house, a unique characteristic of the historic “double shotgun” style
home. Downstairs, the study and master suite on one side of the
hall and music and dining room flanking the other are filled with art
and antiques. In 1900, the Mayor of Columbus, David McClanahan,
purchased the home and incorporated the old kitchen house into
the main structure. He also enlarged the house for his wife and ten
children and included a secret compartment in the master bedroom
where he hid his liquor from his teetotaling wife!

Harris, Whitehall was originally
designed as a two-story Greek
Revival townhouse. This stately
mansion exhibits six paneled
square columns at the edge of
a wooden porch. The banisters

identically-milled hardwood balusters. Inside, heart pine floors and
handsome woodwork provide the background for the Boggess’ collection
of 18th and 19th century antiques.

facade with a Federal influence
and reigns over four and a half
acres of landscaped grounds,
including 3,000 boxwood. The
encircling brick drive was originally
built to accommodate carriages. Rosewood Manor is one of the oldest brick homes in Columbus and has
a museum-quality collection of decorative arts, and has a quaint chapel.

Shadowlawn

Fluted columns tower over the
grand portico of this charming
Greek Revival mansion with its
Gothic and Italianate accents. Shadowlawn houses many
wonderful Victorian collections,
including novelty clocks, calling card receivers, and aesthetic silver
and silverplate. It is an excellent example of Antebellum and
early Victorian lifestyles. Standing stately on the corner beside the
Mississippi University for Women (MUW), Shadowlawn was beautifully
restored in 2001 and is now a wedding venue and bed and breakfast.

THE HAVEN

This house was built by two
brothers, Isaac and Thomas
Williams, both of whom were
“free men of color” from
South Carolina. They owned a
blacksmith shop on the corner
of the property and both were
considered prosperous. The
broad, low-gable roof is typical
of South Carolina low country
architecture. The raised
cottage is reinforced with
handmade bricks and its chimneys still stand perfectly straight after
over 150 years.

The Ole Homestead is a
vernacular raised cottage probably
constructed by Charles Abert when
he moved to Columbus in 1825.
It was originally two rooms over
two rooms facing the Tombigbee
River. In 1835 Abert sold the
home to John Kirk who added an
east wing facing College Street. It is the oldest building remaining within
the original corporate limits of Columbus and among the oldest raisedcottage houses in Mississippi. Former residents include Congressman
H S Bennett and Confederate surgeon James Hopkins. The historic
landmark received the 2014 Trudy Allen Award for residential restoration
in Mississippi from the Mississippi Heritage Trust.

Legend has it the
county’s gold and
silver were once stored
here, but history is the
real treasure in the
home believed to be
the oldest surviving house in north Mississippi, first built as a one-room
log cabin with loft around 1818. Captain Edward Randolph, a soldier in
the War of 1812, enlarged and enhanced the Cedars to suit his station,
an elegant evolution still preserved in the courtly welcome of the graceful
columned veranda that opens the way to charming features like the
exposed log wall of the parlor.

Columbus Air Force Base
Located seven miles north of Main Street, CAFB is one of the Air Force’s
crown jewels in the Southeast. One third of all U.S. Air Force pilots receive
their initial pilot training in Columbus, earning their coveted “silver wings.”
The base began in the early 1940s as an Army Air Corps pilot training base
and was closed from WWII’s end until 1951, when the Korean War brought it
back to life. During the Cold War, its runways trembled under roaring B-52s;
but in 1969, the base returned to its original role of training the world’s best
pilots and warriors. As home to the 14th Flying Training Wing, CAFB is one of
the busiest airfields in the Air Force and, on occasion, accommodates a space
shuttle ferry flight. With a population of nearly 3,000 military and civilian
personnel, CAFB members stand ready to deploy across the world at a
moment’s notice. Because of the current security restrictions, the base
cannot accommodate visitors.

Stephen D. Lee Home
The Stephen D. Lee Home was built in 1847 by Major Thomas Garton Blewett,
a prominent early citizen of Columbus. The house and its outbuildings
originally occupied the entire city block. It became the last home of General
Stephen Dill Lee who married Major Blewett’s granddaughter, Regina Harrison.
General Lee was instrumental in the establishment of the Vicksburg National
Military Park and of Mississippi State University, where he served as the
University’s first president. The house is furnished with many original
decorative pieces and furniture, which were returned to the house by the Lee
descendants. The Florence McLeod Hazard Museum, a local history museum,
is located on the second floor of the home and is comprised of a collection of
artifacts and memorabilia of the Blewett and Lee families as well as a Civil War
collection. Also on the second floor is a bedroom that has been restored and
furnished with original Lee family pieces. The Lee Home is on the National
Register of Historic Places and is a Mississippi Landmark. The Lee Home
also serves as an educational and cultural center for the community.
