I ndispensable Therapies for I m pairm ent -based A phasia I ntervention (Held in conjunction with 4th Singapore Rehab Conference) 28 M arch 2 015 SYNOPSIS This workshop will focus on clinically informative psycholinguistic models and impairment-based therapies. The fundamental components and principles of these models will be highlighted so that clinicians can more precisely define processing breakdowns to identify specific, targeted interventions that optimize treatment outcomes. Efficient assessment practices will be outlined, and five specific therapies will be addressed in terms of their processing characteristics, treatment parameters, and some of the practicalities related to devising and implementing treatment for individual clients. The five therapies are: Ø Ø Ø Ø Ø Semantic Therapy Cued Naming Therapy Phonological Therapies Segmentation Therapy Mapping Therapy TARGET PARTICIPANTS Speech pathologists who work with adults with Acquired Aphasia are welcomed to join us in this workshop. An undergraduate-level understanding of basic box-and-arrow psycholinguistic models (e.g., PALPA model) is desirable, and students who have completed psycholinguistics course modules would understand the content. SPEAKERS Associate Professor Elizabeth Cardell, PhD BSpThy; MSpPath; LCST(London); PhD; MSPA; CPSP Elizabeth Cardell’s clinical and research work in psycholinguistics and aphasia spans over 25 years. Her research Master’s degree (1999) investigated treatment efficacy for lexical-semantic anomia, and her PhD (2006) explored online sentence processing in aphasia. After a long clinical career in neuro-rehabilitation, Elizabeth entered full-time academia in 2008 and is currently Director of the Master of Speech Pathology program at Griffith University, Gold Coast. As well as coordinating the Queensland Psycholinguistics-in-Practice Special Interest Group, she is in high demand as a presenter in psycholinguistics and aphasia and was the Speech Pathology Australia National Tour Speaker for 2007.
