MONTHLY DURANGO PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB MEETING
Please note, we will once again be meeting in the Pine Room at the La Plata County Fairgrounds Extension Building, 2500 Main Avenue, Durango CO. Please join us at our next meeting
from 7:00-9:00pm on Thursday, January 15. Also, we have arranged to have the meeting room
an extra hour so that we can continue in-depth discussions/demonstrations of the software if
needed!
JANUARY MEETING
Our January meeting will actually be a workshop of sorts! Instead of focusing on best ways of
capturing images in your camera, we will be offering information and tutorials on digital darkroom
software and techniques –what you do with an image AFTER you’ve captured it! This night is
designed to give you basic tools to navigate three widely used systems: Elements, Photoshop
and Lightroom. Instructors will demonstrate how to take an ’okay’ photo and make it into a ’wow’
photo! After the demonstrations, members will have a chance to break away into smaller groups
to focus on specific questions and mentoring.
BYOL (Bring your own laptop.) If you have a laptop or other device with one of these three software programs, please bring it to this meeting to work along with the instructor for hands-on
learning. Click on the links in the programs listed above for more information. Other sites are
available too. You can probably find FREE trial periods for each software program if you are not
ready to purchase.
Please join us and learn how to make your photos go from good to great!
FEBRUARY MEETING
February is the DPC Birthday month where we will conduct our annual Club Competition and
Potluck! This meeting is only for members in good standing and one non-member guest. You will
not be able to take part in the February potluck and competition if your dues are not paid up. We
will meet on Thursday, February 19 at 7:00 pm at the Durango Senior Center at 2424 Main Avenue. Enter from the High School side (24th Street) and park in the Senior Center lot. Doors will
open at 6:30pm and we would like to open the buffet as close to 7:00 pm as possible.
POTLUCK: The Club will provide trays of sandwiches, a few buckets of Kentucky Fried Chicken,
drinks (i.e. apple cider, water, coffee) as well as paper plates, forks, knives, spoons, napkins and
glasses.
Attendees are asked to bring a dish (suitable for eight) based upon their last name:
A thru I - Appetizer
J thru N - Salad or Vegetable
O thru Z - Dessert
(Continued on page 2)
Since the Club is providing the main entree and beverages, it is important that we know how many
will attend! Please RSVP no later than February 17th to: Roy or Pat Roberts at 970-764-4138 or
[email protected] or [email protected]. Thanks for your cooperation!
COMPETITION: Only DPC members in good standing (dues paid) are allowed to submit photos.
Submittals must be no larger than 16 x 20 with or without mat and/or frame. Paper, giclee, canvas,
acrylic, aluminum...all are acceptable. Members can bring up to 3 photographs each. Categories
are Landscape, Architecture, Close-up/Macro, People, Animals (domestic and wild), Abstract, and
Miscellaneous. Club members vote to choose the top photo in each category as well as the overall
Best in Show.
DURANGO PHOTO CLUB NEWS
OUTGOING OFFICERS:
Please join us in thanking Jerry Bauman for his years of service to the DPC as Vice President and
Program Director. Also thank our Treasurer and co-membership chairman Linda Thompson. They
have both done an outstanding job in ensuring the behind-the-scenes operations run smoothly and
seamlessly.
INCOMING OFFICERS:
We are pleased to announce that Matt Hoaglin has stepped up to be the new Vice President and
Program Director and Gordon Greve has stepped into the Treasurer/Co-Membership Chairman
position. Please welcome them and thank them for taking on these duties.
ANNUAL DUES DUE
Dues are $20 per year for an individual, $30 per year for a family. Dues are due on January 1st of
each year. If you have not already done so, please plan to pay at the January meeting or send
your check payment to Gordon Greve, 387 Horse Thief Lane, Durango CO 81301. Email Gordon
(see back page) if you have questions regarding your membership.
FUTURE MEETINGS UPDATE
We will meet in the Pine Room at the LPC Fairgrounds unless otherwise announced. Please come
up to 20 minutes early to socialize with other photographers and then be able to start the meeting
on time.
We will continue to plan for a special guest presentation for the first half of the meeting.
Starting with our March meeting, we will no longer have monthly themed challenges but we will
have IMAGE SHARE. Members will submit up to three photos via email to our new VP Matt
Hoaglin (see back page). Matt will compile and display them during the second half of the meeting.
We’d like the photographer to provide image info (ISO, shutter speed, aperture, as well as if any
filters, lighting or tripod was used) and any post processing. This second half of the meeting will be
educational so that members can learn from the photographer’s image as well as the photographer
may ask and learn in what ways the photo could be improved. More information will come in future
e-newsletters. Although the page will be available if you’d like to view or share images, Flickr will
no longer be used for image sharing at DPC meetings.
CHANGE OF ADDRESS?
If you have changed your email address, please be sure to notify us as we use it to keep you apprised of all Club activities.
UPCOMING PHOTO COMPETITIONS
and OPPORTUNITIES
Durango Coffee Company
DPC members are invited to display their work. Yvonne Lashmett is displaying four of her Black &
White train photographs for the month of January. Currently the months of February and March are
available. Please contact Linda Pampinella (see back page) if you are interested in displaying.
Colorado Life Magazine
We at Colorado Life Magazine are planning issues a few years in advance, and we’re looking to get
some photos lined up for future versions of our events section. We’d like to know if you’d be up for
shooting some events in your neck of the woods. Our rate for department photos is $50 for each bigger
one used in the magazine, $25 for smaller ones. The Durango events that seem most likely to be covered in the magazine are the Polar Express and the Snowdown. However, we’d love input on other fun
events to cover. If there’s something interesting and photogenic going on and you send us a photo of it,
we’d likely consider it for publication.
Thanks, Matt Masich Assistant Editor, Colorado Life Magazine [email protected]

The Durango Arts Center announces 2015 DAC MicroGrants application cycle now open.
DAC MicroGrants is a visionary funding program for artists in La Plata, Archuleta, Montezuma, Dolores
and San Juan Counties. Understanding that a financial barrier is oftentimes all that stands in the way of
an artists’ next critical step in their career, MicroGrants distributes small but impacting funds to emerging
and established artists, serving as a catalyst to further their work while living and creating in Southwest
Colorado. This opportunity is open to DAC members as well as non-members.
Eligibility Criteria: Artists do not have to be members of the Durango Arts Center, and no priority will
be given to DAC members. Individual artists working in the following mediums are welcome to apply:
Artists must be currently living and creating work in one of the five counties surrounding Durango: La
Plata, Archuleta, Montezuma, Dolores or San Juan. Funding may be applied towards artistic needs
small and large, depending on the proposal. DAC MicroGrants supports ambitious projects that embrace
experimentation and focus on process, as well as emerging artist essentials, such as materials, supplies, professional development or website fees.
Applications are due January 30, 2015. Awards distributed March 6, 2014
