PRO BONO OPPORTUNITIES
Short-term and longer-term pro bono projects are listed on the CUA Law Pro Bono TWEN page. You also may create
your own pro bono project. We encourage you to take the Pro Bono Challenge. Through the Pro Bono Challenge, CUA
students pledge to complete varying levels of pro bono service during their three or four years of law school. Here are
typical projects:
1 - Property Tax Credit Project with Legal Counsel for the Elderly
Legal Counsel for the Elderly seeks 1-2 student volunteers who can assist with this project and devote a minimum of
6 hours per week, according to their availability. Weekday work only (not nights & weekends).
Qualifications: (1) familiarity with tax law and/or (2) experience interviewing and assisting low-income clients.
Students help low-income seniors who have high housing costs to obtain a DC property tax credit of up to $1,000.
Students screen clients for eligibility, guide clients to assemble documentation, and meet with clients completing the
DC tax form. Students also follow up with clients to determine whether the credit was received and advocate with
the Office of Tax Revenue when the credit has been wrongfully denied.
The project will run through spring semester. Training is provided, and all class levels are welcome.
If interested: Sign up on the Pro Bono at CUA TWEN page AND email Rochelle Bobroff, LCE’s Senior Attorney for
Systemic Reform, at [email protected].
2 - Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Clinic with CASA de MD on 01/24 in Hyattsville: http://tinyurl.com/
nz97mwn
3 - Prince George’s County Office of the State’s Attorney, District Court Division (assist with screening cases and
providing discovery): http://tinyurl.com/kw8q2vf

SUMMER FUNDING FOR PUBLIC INTEREST/SERVICE WORK
As you know, finding a summer position that will pay a rising 2L or 3L is hard. However, if you are interested in public
interest or public service summer placements, funding is available from the Law School through the Student for Public Interest Law (SPIL) summer stipend program. However, in order to qualify for funding, you need to have contributed to the work of SPIL. It is not too late to get involved. For more information contact Raha Mokhtari or Caitlyn
Yuschak, co-Presidents of SPIL. Raha may be reached at [email protected] and Caitlyn at
[email protected].
The Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps JD program provides law students with the opportunity to earn a $1,212
Segal AmeriCorps Education Award for dedicating 300 hours of service to a qualifying legal project with a
nonprofit program or other qualifying organization. Students serving in the program’s priority areas may
apply now through Friday, February 6, 2015. Your 300 service hours can be completed anytime from when
your application is accepted and your background check has been initiated through August 31, 2015.
SUMMER EXTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Judge Amy Berman Jackson of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia is accepting applications
for judicial internship positions for summer 2015. Interns will research substantive and procedural legal issues and
draft written recommendations for resolving those issues. They will also be responsible for detailed editing and citation checking. Additionally, interns will have regular opportunities to observe court proceedings.
This unpaid internship is open to all law students. Summer interns are expected to work full time for at least 10
weeks.
Applications should contain a cover letter, resume, transcript (unofficial is accepted; first year students may submit
transcripts separately when grades become available), three professional or academic references, and a short (15
pages or less) writing sample that reflects the applicant’s research and analytical skills. Please send all applications via
email to [email protected]. Please do not mail applications. Also, please title the subject
line as follows: Summer 2015 Intern Application: [applicant’s name]
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Questions may be directed to chambers via phone at 202-354-3460 or
to the above email address.
Summer Internship with the Federal Trade Commission – Office of International Affairs (Consumer Protection Group).
OIA’s consumer protection group frequently hosts interns who work with the office’s attorneys at the FTC’s headquarters in Washington, DC. Interns are responsible for researching novel and substantial legal issues, such as on-line privacy and governance issues, European consumer law, and issues relating to Internet jurisdiction and transnational service
of process. Interns sometimes also attend intra- and interagency meetings, assist in planning events for foreign visitors,
and follow developments in foreign law.
To apply for a summer 2015 position, send a cover letter, résumé, academic transcript, and writing sample via e-mail
by February 6 to: Hui Ling Goh, Counsel for International Consumer Protection, Office of International Affairs, Federal
Trade Commission, 600 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20580; Email: [email protected]
Applications should be submitted via email as soon as possible.
FULL-TIME SUMMER POSITIONS AVAILABLE
AT COLUMBUS COMMUNITY LEGAL SERVICES
CCLS is currently accepting applications from students who are interested in
working in the clinic during the summer. Students will work with supervising
attorneys in representing clients in the clinic’s ongoing litigation and case matters.
Students will have the opportunity to: work directly with clients; conduct
interviews and case investigations; and prepare cases for trial.
All interested students are encouraged to apply. However, preference will be
given to current and former clinic students who are already certified for practice as
a student attorney or to those current clinic students whose applications for
certification are currently pending. The positions are paid positions and will last
13 weeks. We anticipate having five or six positions available. If interested in
applying for one of the positions and to ensure full consideration, please submit a
resume and cover letter to the attention of Paul Kurth, CCLS Managing Director, by
February 11, 2015.
CCLS is home to four clinical programs and areas of focus: the
Advocacy for the Elderly Clinic; the Families and the Law Clinic; the Civil
Practice Clinic; and the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic. When applying for one
of these positions, students should specify their preference, if any, regarding
the clinical program for which they would like their application considered.

your résumé or cover letter?
