The Promise of Living
Radio City
Rachmaninoff is considered to be one of the finest pianists of his day and one of the
last great representatives of Romanticism in Russian Classical music. The third
piano concerto was composed for his North American tour in 1909 and offers an
immense challenge for the soloist. Shostakovich wrote Festive Overture in just two
days. A brilliant, effervescent work, its vivacious energy spills over like uncorked
champagne. The Tender Land was written by Copland under commission to
commemorate the League of Composers 30th Anniversary. ‘The Promise of Living’
is the third movement of the suite. Radio City by Michael Daugherty will be an
Australian premiere performance. Some may recall his Red Cape Tango featured in
the 2014 concert series. Radio City is his incredible tribute to fiery conductor
Toscanini and the NBC Symphony.

Name any great Hollywood blockbuster and there is almost assuredly an inspiring
soundtrack accompanying it. Music evokes strong emotion – suspense, fear, elation
– and it is through these feelings that music enables us to connect with characters
and experience thrilling action scenes. Observe the amazing array of instruments
we normally experience only by ear that are used in the production of this music.
Additional works will include music from Babe, Gallipoli, The Mission and The Spy
Who Loved Me.

Gershwin
Founded in 1895, The Proms, or as they are more formally known, The Henry
Wood Promenade Concerts presented by the BBC, are billed as the greatest
classical music festival on earth. With well over 90 concerts every year from July to
September, they take place in the Royal Albert Hall, London. Join the Heidelberg
Symphony and the Ashton Smith Singers for an evening of nostalgia, excitement
and romance as we romp through the musical heritage of the British Isles in a
tribute to the Last Night of the Proms. The programme will include a selection of the
best of British music, including such favourites as The Planets by Holst, Rose of
England, The Floral Dance, Ye Banks and Braes, Donald Where’s Your Trousers
and 100 Pipers. This is a concert for all the family and definitely not to be missed!
Four Dances from Estancia
Poème for Violin and Orchestra
Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso for Violin & Orchestra
Suite No. 2 from the ballet Spartacus
Porgy and Bess: A Symphonic Picture
Ginastera’s Four Dances from Estancia makes extensive use of Argentinian folk
music in a brilliantly orchestrated work that well deserves its considerable
popularity, and Khachaturian’s Spartacus Suite is infused with enchanting Armenian
influences and portrays the poignant struggles of the heroic slaves. The
incomparable Natsuko Yoshimoto is back with a wonderful French selection – the
delicate and introspective Poème and the charming and virtuosic Introduction and
Rondo Capriccioso. Gershwin’s famous ‘folk opera’ Porgy and Bess provides an
exuberant finale to the 2015 season.
Prior to the HSO concert, ticket holders are eligible to attend Twilight Concerts by Junior Strings of Banyule &
Robertson Youth Orchestra from 5.30-6.30pm, and the Heidelberg Wind Ensemble from 7.00 – 7.30pm
