Fire at a Brooklyn Warehouse Puts
Private Lives on Display.
- New York Times Headline
When I stepped outside the church last Sunday morning
I immediately noticed the acrid smell of something burning. It didn't smell like wood smoke, so I doubted that it
was coming from a neighbor's fireplace. I could still smell
it when I arrived over at Gregorian Hall for Mass. And
then it dawned on me that the odor was coming from the
burning warehouse in Williamsburg.
Strewn all about were decades’ worth of charred medical
records, court transcripts, lawyers’ letters, sonograms,
bank checks and more.
Somewhere in heaven there is a storage room with billions and trillions of boxes of our personal information:
the record of our sins and failures. As we look forward to
Ash Wednesday in another week or so, I would like to
think that those ashes represent what happens to our heavenly rap sheets. Every last one is burned to a char by God's
love, with not a trace remaining.
And the record of our virtues, our acts of kindness and
compassion, our moments of heroism? Not to worry.
They are all carefully maintained in HeavenlyCitiStorage a facility that is 100% fireproof.
++++++
The fire that began on Saturday morning went to seven
alarms before it was brought under control the next day.
Even after the blaze seems to have been extinguished, fire
personnel remain on the scene to prevent a fresh outbreak
of flames.
What made this fire so difficult to put out is the fact that
it occurred in a building run by CitiStorage that housed
four million boxes of records. There were so many sheets
of paper that they clogged the water-intake system of the
fireboat out in the East River.
WORLD DAY FOR CONSECRATED LIFE is celebrated today, Sunday, February 8th. We recognize and
give thanks for those who have consecrated their lives to
God and the Church through vows of poverty, chastity
and obedience. May the light of Christ shine brightly
through men and women who choose the consecrated life
to live out their baptismal commitment.
COLLECTIONS last week amounted to $12,000.
Thank you for your generosity.
“They’re like treasure maps, but with people’s personal information all over them,” Spencer Bergen, 24, said of the
half-charred scraps that he said he had seen strewn around
the Williamsburg neighborhood as far inland as Berry
Street.
