C NNECTING THE D TS MESSAGE SERIES
| February 1, 8, 15, 22, and March 1 | Joel K. Johnson
We embark on a journey into the first five centuries of Christianity. It’s His-Story. It is a true story, and it is our story
with heroes and villains, and passion and betrayal, and big questions and big surprises. It is your story whether or
not you are a Christian yourself. Christianity infused the western world; shaping our landscape, language, art, family
life, law, the shape of society, the very way our minds work. This is the story of how we came to be who we are. Most
people have a fair idea of how it starts, with Jesus and His disciples, and parables and Pharisees. And they tend to
have a fair idea of how it ends, with the end of the world as we know it and the promised return of Jesus Christ. But
they tend to be a little hazy about the 2,000-year hiatus in the middle. How did we get from there to here? This series
will help you connect the dots from then to now, all while clarifying what we believe and why we believe it.

Students
Sundays
Xchange (grades 6–8)
Sundays, 11:10am–12:15pm
Room A112
On Wednesday nights during the school year, we
have loads of students in our building. It’s super
fun and a highlight of my week. But we also have
many volunteer leaders caring, shepherding, conversing, and encouraging students.
These leaders range from high school students
to the retired, and everyone in between, but they
all have one thing in common. God has made a
difference in their own life and they want to make
a difference in the life of a student. Our leaders
are more than chaperones...much more! They take
an active role building a relationship with each
student in their small group through good conversation, listening to students and pointing them to
Christ. Many leaders connect with students beyond
Wednesday nights. Our leaders know that they are
not the life-changers, but it’s the Holy Spirit, and
they have been invited to have a front seat to the
work of God. Having a caring leader in a student’s
life is one factor to a sticky faith.
We are grateful and thankful to God for providing
committed followers of Jesus who want to share
with students the love Jesus. Because of the volunteer leaders, student ministry thrives and students
experience a tangible model of Jesus each week.
We worship together, participate in discussion groups with caring adult leaders, play games and
mixers to get moving, and hear a message related to middle school students.
Each week we’ll discuss a question to help students consider their faith now and for the future.
Students, bring your Bibles!

The energy, excitement, and enthusiasm that
9th grade students bring each week to Upper
Room is contagious and energizing. Seeing our
freshman invite new students each week, serve
on the Upper Room worship team, reach out to
people in their schools, start Bible studies on
their campuses, welcome others to Upper Room
with open arms, serve their peers on the student
leadership team, and serve people downtown
Minneapolis and around the world are various
ways our students are living out the Gospel and
making a difference. The words of 1 Timothy 4:12
resonate in my heart as I think of these amazing
students, and it pours out of my mouth as I share
with others of what God is doing in and through
them in Upper Room: “Don’t let anyone look
down on you because you are young, but set
an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” Not only are
these students excited to be here on Wednesday
nights to deepen their understanding of what
they believe and why, they are also passionate
about reflecting God with
their lives and making a difference here, near, and far.

Even Better After 50 Class
Thursdays, February 5–26, 7:00–9:00pm, Woodside
This class is based on the book Even Better After 50— How to Become (and Remain) WELL
of Body, Wise of Mind, and WHOLE of Spirit in the Second Half of Life by Richard P.
Johnson PH.D. and will be led by Pastor Mark Nelson.
Part II—The Art of Living Wisely
February 5—Promoting Personal Health Power
I believe the desire to discover and fulfill our life purpose is one of the strongest forces driving us. The
question that frames our lives is, “What is the purpose of my existence?” Teleios is all about helping
people ask and hopefully answer this question for
the second half of their lives.
February 12—Creating Healthy Relationships
February 19—Learning the Wise Art of Exceptional Living
February 26—Actualizing Wise and Positive Mental Attitudes
Part III—Pathways to Wholeness will be covered in March, ending on March 26th.
Contact Kim if you are interested in attending.
In the first half of our lives, purpose is often defined
for us by the external expectations of education,
career and family. However in the second half of
life, most of us are done with school, disappointed
or unexpectedly displaced in our careers, and living
in an empty nest. Now what?

We find ourselves needing to dream new dreams
and pursue new purposes so that we can discover
new significance. We come to realize that we still
have a driving felt need for making a difference
with our lives, for God, for ourselves and for others.
Making a difference in the second half of life
requires that we learn the art of living wisely.
Being wise is all about knowing who we are and
discovering what it is that we are to do in the world.
In order for us to maximize our potential for making
a difference we must not only be wise of mind, we
also must be well of body, and whole of spirit. If you
want to believe that life can be Even Better after 50,
if you want to make a difference with your life, join
us on the Teleios journey.

Volunteer
Be a Servant–Volunteer Opportunities
To be a follower of Jesus is to do what Jesus did. Jesus, the king of heaven, served others. At Westwood,
there are many ways to volunteer based on your interests and availability. Find something that excites you
and dive in. Your joy factor is about to increase!
Children’s Ministries: Broad scope of teaching, helping and/or creative roles available with focus on
small group format for birth - 5th grade.
Contact: Danise McMillen, 952.224.7342, [email protected]
One Sunday morning, I stopped to talk with a lead
usher who volunteers her time at Westwood every
Sunday to ensure a smooth service for all who
attend. We talked for a few minutes and I thanked
her for everything that she does, both on Sundays
and during the week. The hours she puts in mean
so much! She then said, “Oh, it’s nothing. This is my
happy place. This is where I feel fulfilled.” Her words
struck a chord with me as well—church is where I
also feel fulfilled! And that’s not the first time I have
heard that from Westwood attenders.
One of our core values at Westwood is that people
really understand who they are in Christ, and how
God has created them uniquely to fulfill his purpose.
When you step out in faith, and volunteer to serve
your time at Westwood, whether that is in kids’ ministry, worship arts, as a greeter at the front door, or
in the kitchen prepping food for funerals, we care
about the gifts God has given you. In the right place,
as children of God, we shine. There is a light from
within that surpasses any joy the world has to offer.
If you are in a place this year of wanting to serve the
kingdom of God in an impactful way, step out boldly
in faith and discover how He wired you to find joy in
serving Him!

Our Compass Verse for 2015
Micah 6:8 held our focus for The JUST Church series. Now let’s commit it to memory and allow it
to take us through 2015 as a “compass verse.”
Cut out the above picture and post it somewhere you will see it everyday. When you’ve internalized
something, it can stay with you all your life—like the lyrics to your favorite song from high school.
Here are 5 tips for memorizing Bible verses:
•Write it down. Not just once; write it many times–five or ten times is a good start.
•Say it out loud. Burn them into your memory by speaking the words aloud.
•Incorporate the verse into your prayers. Pray that God will help you understand and apply the
verse to your life. Pray for God’s help in fixing the verse in your heart and mind.
•Put it everywhere. Write the verse on sticky notes and put them all over the place. Use the
image above and make it your computer desktop background.
•Use music to help. During The JUST Church service we sang the song “You Have Shown Us.”
Find it on You Tube at http://youtu.be/hzVru. Or repurpose a tune you already know.
These are just a few of the great tips you will find on the Bible Gateway Blog. Check it out at
www.biblegateway.com/blog.

WESTWOOD SUMMER CAMPS WORK TO IGNITE the faith of students and
change the way they live their everyday lives. Through authentic worship,
messages centered on Jesus, daily devotionals, small group and quiet prayer
time, students are able to dig deep in their faith and experience God’s love
and presence in a unique way. Read on to learn about each trip through the
perspective of the student ministry pastors and students that have gone in
past years.
FOR INCOMING 6TH-8TH GRADERS, Hype is a 5-day summer camp set
in Grantsburg, Wisconsin. Students create stronger bonds with other students, leaders and God. Through fun activities such as rock wall climbing,
zip lining, and interactive free time, students have fun together for a whole
week. Chapel occurs twice a day and includes worship, a message, and
cabin time conversation. Students’ faith is dynamically impacted. For Natalie Nichols, a current 8th grader, her favorite part of Hype was worship.
“It was like a chain reaction. Everyone was super into it and pumped up
about their faith which made me super pumped up about mine.” Aiden Erani, also an 8th grader,
enjoyed small group cabin time “HYPE WOKE ME UP AND MADE
ME REALIZE THAT MY FAITH IS
and listening to the high school

leaders share their faith stories.
“It really helped having leaders
– SAMMI LEE, 6TH GRADE
so close in age there to help you
in your faith because they have
all gone through it before.” 6th grader Emma Baden admits, “I was scared
to do it before, but now I am able to comfortably share my faith with
12
people
who don’t
know who
Jesus is.”
Pastor
Dianne
summed
up Hype’s
impact:
“Students return from camp changed people, reflecting that Hype was a
place they met God or they prayed for the first time. When students talk
about a sacred moment in their faith journey, they often mention how
Hype summer camp was a place God made Himself known to them.” By
the end of a Hype trip, each student walks away with new friends and a
deeper understanding of their faith, as Pastor Dianne explains “a faith that
can stick beyond high school.”
EXPLICITLY STATED IN ITS NAME, this summer camp gives 9th graders
the chance to “unite” and grow spiritually as a class through a variety of
fun activities, lively worship, great biblical teaching, time alone with God
and small group time. Unite is a 6-day camp in Green Lake, Wisconsin,
that gives students great opportunities to deepen their faith and, as Kari
Nelson, Upper Room Associate puts it, “have more fun than you thought
you could ever have!” With an incredible band playing a variety of music
genres, students all agreed that worship was their absolute favorite part.
“I already loved worship, but Unite made me fall in love with worship
even more,” stated Jack Velasco. “The thing that stuck with me the most
was worship,” said Nathan Pharis. Ethan Wizbwoski was “on a spiritual
high the whole time.” Morgan Day also enjoyed how students were able
to come closer as a Westwood community. “We were even able to see
someone accept Christ,” she added. Students who attended Unite last
year said, “We grew together, and now, we are like family.” Max Steine
encourages students to go on the trip. “If we could do it again, we
would!”
“THE LAST TWO NIGHTS OF THE SPEAKER AND WORSHIP AT THE
UNITE TRIP ARE WHAT REALLY PULLED ME ALONG FARTHER IN
MY FAITH JOURNEY.” – MAX STEINE
SET AT THE FOOT OF THE BEAUTIFUL Collegiate Peaks in Colorado, Silver Cliff Ranch is and has been a great location to host
a camp for 10th–12th graders for an amazing week together.
The scenery alone reminds students of God’s glorious creation;
not to mention God thinks we are even more beautiful than
the picture-perfect mountainous landscape. Erin Halla’s favorite
memory was watching the sunrise at four in the morning with
the girls in her cabin. “Camp is truly a way to experience God
in a setting much different than Minnesota.” Throughout the
week, students are led through a variety of onsite games and
activities; white-water rafting being one of the favorites, as
well as enjoying worship

centered on Jesus, and small
group cabin time. “Colorado is a trip unlike any other,” Pastor
Josh explains. “Students get an opportunity to get away from
their normal routine at home and go to a beautiful camp in the
mountains. It is often one of the life-changing moments in students’ faith journeys.” Caitie Shafer, a junior, enjoyed the break
from technology: “You
got to focus on what “IT’S ONE WEEK OUT OF YOUR SUMMER

worried about what
is going on at home,
you are just focusing on your faith,”an uncommon opportunity
for busy high school students. Emily Hongslo encourages other
students to go, saying, “It is a trip that changes your faith and
who you are as a person, and you make life-long friendships
that you wouldn’t have made if you didn’t go.” Even though
it is only one week out of your students’ summer, they will
leave Colorado with memories that will last a lifetime. Students
entering 10–12 grades in Fall 2015 are invited to check out
Colorado 2015!

COME JOIN US AS WE PACK 225,000 MEALS ON SATURDAY,
FEBRUARY 28. PARTNERING WITH FEED MY STARVING CHILDREN,
THIS AMBITIOUS GOAL REQUIRES 1,200 VOLUNTEERS.
During the month of January, Pastor Joel spoke on injustice and ways
in which we are called to “act justly and to love mercy and to
walk humbly with your God.” The greater need in our world today, and the purpose of the Food Pack, is to not only feed God’s hungry people – “in body and in spirit” – but to also challenge injustice
in our world today. One way to get involved in righting the wrongs of
injustice is to volunteer for one or two time slots during the Food Pack.
It may seem like a small gesture, but the effect can be profound.
The Westwood Outreach Ministry has a focus and ministry to three
main people groups. Middle Eastern Muslims are one of these groups.
We have asked Feed My Starving Children to investigate sending the
food from the pack directly to Syrians who have been fleeing their
war-torn country and are scattered in refugee camps in Jordan, Turkey,
and even Syria itself. As Chaz Nichols, Westwood’s Director of Missions
and Adult Ministries, explains, “It is easy to look at the news in the
Middle East and not know what to do. We want to bless them and
show them the love of Jesus Christ in any way that we can. As a Westwood family and body of believers, we have the opportunity to provide
much-needed food to Syrian Muslims and Christians living in an area
suffering from tyrannical leadership and ISIS influence.”
Register today at www.westwoodcc.org/upcoming
The Mobile Food Pack is a great event for your family, your small group
or a group of your friends or neighbors. We invite you to register you
and your group for more than one shift! Shifts are available throughout the day from 8:00am to 6:00pm. Help meet the greater need in
our world.
Experience missions in worlds far away, without
leaving the Westwood campus!

Westwood’s Annual Food Pack
Saturday, February 28, 7:00am–10:00pm*
Every year the entire Westwood family comes together on the Westwood campus to pack food for
people in ravaged areas of the world. Last year, over 1,200 people came out to help for this event.
This year, Feed My Starving Children will be our food pack partner. This is a great event for your
family, a group of friends, small group or even your neighbors. And in addition to the packing, there
will be a small Outreach Exploration Expo as part of the whole experience. The expo will give you the
opportunity to explore and learn about the various ministries Westwood has in the area and around
the world.
Come for one shift…or consider doing a couple of packing shifts that day!
Time—4 Shifts will run in two hour segments:

The Just Church: Exploring God’s Call to Justice
Thursdays, through February 12, 7:00–8:30pm
Room B100
Laura Gilbertson, Professor at Bethel University and frequent speaker at Westwood, will be leading
a four-week study on understanding God’s heart for justice. Drawing from author Jim Martin’s book
The Just Church, Laura will lead a highly interactive study in pursuing God’s heart for us personally
and as a church in the area of justice.

Internship Program in Malawi
Westwood has partnered with World Relief for years in Malawi. Westwood teams have made
numerous trips to the northern province of Chitipa–bringing spiritual encouragement to both
pastors and lay people. As a further deepening of the partnership, Westwood and World Relief are
announcing an internship program in Chitipa, Malawi to begin in June 2015. A three to six-month
assignment, this is a wonderful opportunity for university students or active retired folks.
Everyone wants to make a difference in the world.
And while recent news might suggest otherwise,
most groups are created in order to make a
positive impact in the world.
And isn’t this, in part, what the psalmist was asking, when he prayed, “Teach us to number our
days, that we might gain a heart of wisdom.” He
was mindful that life is short and we need God’s
wisdom to be the right kind of people engaged in
difference making activities.
And when it comes to making a difference, it really
is about people—that’s God’s heart. He wants us
to give our lives away to others. But as a church,
we need to be looking out in the world for those
opportunities as well.
Over the next few months Outreach will be looking for ways to help some of the 3 million Syrians
who have had to flee their country.
We are asking Feed My Starving Children, our
annual food packing partner this year, to see if
they can direct the food Westwood packs to be
sent to help Syrian Muslims and Christians who
have fled the violence and war in their country. The
current plight of the Syrians is one of the greatest
humanitarian problems in the world today—and
as a church we can make a difference in their lives.
I am asking you go online today and register for
one or more packing sessions at Westwood’s Annual Food Pack (details to the left). Let’s make a
difference together.

This month’s theme of ‘making a difference’ made
me think. I pondered the word ‘difference’ and
then looked it up in the thesaurus and found the
following words: change, alteration, variance,
modification, and metamorphosis. Making a
difference is hard to measure, because it may not
be recognized at the outset. It may take some
time. With our lives’ full of constant demands,
expectations, and responsibilities, how are we to
really make a difference when there is so much on
our plates?
Contact: Tammy Hakanson, 952.836.9069, [email protected]
I think it starts with the inner journey of the
heart. The Bible teaches that we are to align our
life’s compass towards Christ. He wants us to be
receptive to His presence. He does not want our
frenetic activity, busyness, or the tendency to be
‘people pleasers’…he wants our attention. As we
begin to alter the posture of our hearts we are able
to lean into His whispers, putting us in a better
position to hear His voice. Spending time in scripture can quiet our souls and anchor us in the truth
that Christ’s love, compassion and kindness will
leave their mark on our hearts. As we experience
ongoing inner heart change He will use us to make
a difference from the inside out.

Care & Support
Care with the Love of Jesus Christ
Thursdays, February 12–March 12, 6:30–8:30pm, Room A206*
Discover effective ways to carry the love of Christ into painful circumstances at home, work or play.
This five week interactive training explores God’s call to care and how to recognize and respond to
the hurting people we encounter every day. Topics include: Listening, Feelings, Boundaries, Grief and
Loss and Prayer.
To the world you may be only one person. But
to one person you may be the world. (Mary Jo
Copeland)
My own life is changed because of a world of
others who have patiently listened, prayed for me,
helped me sort through the tangle of emotions and
life challenges, and genuinely loved me like Jesus.
Not long ago I found myself seriously stuck in the
mud. Well beyond the wheel-wells…so to speak.
It seemed the more I revved my engine, attempting
to make progress on my own, the more my anxiety
increased and the deeper the rut became. Thank
God for a friend who answered my call for help and
simply listened!
Perhaps you’ve been on the receiving end of a
frantic phone call from a friend or family member and wrestled with how to respond. Maybe a
neighbor shared a significant concern for her child
and is turning to you for help. Or perhaps your
co-worker confided in you about certain bad news
they received—a death in the family or a pending
divorce—and you felt at a loss to know what to
say, or do, even how to pray.
If so, I’d encourage you to attend the Westwood
class, Caring with the love of Jesus Christ.
Come explore the essential actions, attitudes and
responses of demonstrating Christ-like care for
others. I promise that you will discover practical
and invaluable ways to make a world of difference!

Groups/Studies
Bible Study: Lamplighters
Lamplighters Bible study groups offer several opportunities to study Scripture, make new friends,
grow spiritually, and learn how to be a disciple for Christ.
Lamplighters Men’s Groups
The first Sunday in January, I had the privilege of
interviewing Gaylon and Bruce, two guys who are
in the same small group who God has brought
together in a unique way. Gaylon donated his
kidney to Bruce, and everyone has a profound new
lease on life and faith. If you missed the story, you
can catch the January 4 sermon online.
This is the kind of story that you hear on the news.
It all took place in a Westwood small group. About
a dozen people who took a relational risk, and
are now growing together in faith. The invitation
on January 4 and the invitation now in the month
of February‑get into a group if you’re not in one.
We would love to help you find a circle of trusted
friends that you can journey with.
A few ways to explore: You can stop by the
“Groups” tables on a Sunday when you’re here.
You could also go online to westwoodcc.org/

personally help you.

Hebrews, The Nearness of King Jesus
“The book of Hebrews is the scaffolding of Christian faith” declares author, Lisa Harper. Join us as
we explore the bridge between the Old and New Testaments to get to the heart of the matter: Jesus
is our accessible King. He is not a far-away God, but an up-close Redeemer who draws near to us.
Hebrews helps women make the connection between God the Father and God the Son and reminds
us that Jesus is supreme. He is compassionate, empathetic, and loving to the end.
Cost: $17 or $22 after March 8. Registration online opens noon, February 16.*

Group Connect
Mondays, February 2 and 9, 6:30–8:30pm*
Woodside
God designed us to be in community with each other and lives are changed when people
intentionally connect in a small group. Whether you are new to this small group thing or have been
a part of groups in the past, we want to help you on your way. Group Connect is a 2 hour gathering
where you can meet people in your same life stage or part of town and form common ground to start
a small group. Your group will meet here at Westwood for two consecutive weeks. You will share a
meal with your group, get to know the other members of your group through discussing questions
from Sunday’s sermon, and then be given information on how your new group will operate for the
next six weeks. This would be a great event to bring a friend. In order to guarantee that you will be
in the same group, they must also register themselves. Donations will be accepted to help defray the
cost of the meal.
If you are unable to attend Group Connect, but still would like to be in a group, please look at open
groups at https://westwoodcc.infellowship.com/GroupSearch.

God created us to be in relationship with each other. What we
pursue in small groups at Westwood is genuine community

so much more. If you sense God nudging you to lead this
kind of community, please join us at one of our upcoming
two-hour training programs. We go through content to help
you prepare to start a new small group.
