Exposure Festival February 2015

CHAIR’S MESSAGE
by Peter Duthie, Chair, exposure 2015
One young guy, in fact,
said to me last year,
“Exposure is the light
in all that long winter
darkness. I don’t stop
the entire month
living and breathing
photography. I can’t
wait for it to happen,
and I hate it when it’s
over!” I can’t actually
attest to that being the
exact quote, but I can
tell you with certainty
that Exposure 2015 is
here and it’s bigger and
better than ever. Enjoy!
photography festival
On behalf of Exposure’s Board – now
larger by three new members – I am
happy to report that Exposure 2014 was a
tremendous success: a fitting celebration
of Exposure’s tenth anniversary. The
flagship event of last year was Decade,
the Festival’s first curated retrospective
showcasing work featured in past festival
exhibits. Curated by Vincent Varga and
hosted by the Christine Klassen Gallery,
Decade demonstrated the depth and
breath of photography enjoyed by
denizens of the Banff-Canmore-Calgary
corridor during the past nine Februarys.
If you missed Decade, which would be a
sad admission, you can sample our five
minute video of the exhibition on the
Exposure website.

Exposure 2014 encompassed more than 60 venues. Some reported
attendance numbers as high as 3,000 visitors. Exposure showcased
photography for an audience anywhere from 130,000 to 2.5 million,
depending on whether or not the viewers of the emerging
photographers on Pattison billboards get counted. Our guide, now a
major source of revenue, saw a print-run of 28,000 and was distributed
at every Fast Forward Weekly drop-off location from Calgary to Banff.
Our Facebook page, at the peak of the Festival, grew to more than
400 regular visitors and continues to grow; our Twitter feed exceeded
1,500 followers at the end of the Festival. Our third was held at Festival
Hall, where music, magic, live and silent auctions, good photographic
friends and fellowship came together to create a memorable and
profitable evening. Throughout the Festival, photography lovers were
running from commercial and non-commercial spaces taking in great
photographic exhibitions, attending photographers presentations in
Calgary and Banff, strolling the streets of Canmore and dropping into
participating galleries, driving back to the Cave and Basin in Banff for
more photography, catching a film at Glenbow as part of our regular
February film series (featuring films about photographers or
photography), and chatting at any number of opening and closing
events. It’s impossible to take it all in. Believe me, I’ve tried.
But that’s the past. What about Exposure 2015? Well, expect all of
the above and even more. Thanks to our loyal sponsors – Vistek,
CADA, The City of Calgary and Rhino Print Solutions – and those
supportive folks who place ads and listings in this guide, we’re able
produce this handsome guide to help you decide what you want to
see or how you want to participate in this year’s Exposure offerings. Try
to be in Banff on January 30 and 31 for two of my favourite events, the
photographers’ presentations hosted by the Juniper Hotel and the
Festival’s Banff-Canmore opening at the Whyte Museum of the
Canadian Rockies. Also, take note of this year’s Founders’ Gallery
exhibition—Burnt Generation—– at The Military Museums and the
Oh Canada exhibition at Glenbow. Also, be at Glenbow on February 25
for an Exposure sponsored talk by the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Sophie
Hackett in celebration of the Glenbow exhibition. These are just a few
of the many events and exhibits that you can be part of this year.
But there’s something else I’d like to share, I have very special news
about the eleventh year of the Festival. We have stretched the
Exposure umbrella higher and wider and invited other communities in
Alberta to participate, and we’re happy to announce that among
others Edmonton’s Douglas Udell Gallery and the Louie Photography
Gallery—the first Edmonton Exposure opening venue—are on board.
They are the start of our initiative to reach out to a broader audience
and participant base of more than 4 million Albertans.
So I guess you could compare the growth of Exposure to the first
law of Thermodynamics—at least I remember one thing from my
high-school physics class— energy can neither be created nor
destroyed. It can only change forms. Over the years an immense
amount of raw, enthusiastic energy has been pumped into this
festival– thanks to a hard working Board and the efforts of our Festival
Manager, Wes Lafortune – and you are seeing it reshaped before your
eyes into one of the best photography festivals in the country. One
young guy, in fact, said to me last year, “Exposure is the light in all that
long winter darkness. I don’t stop the entire month living and
breathing photography. I can’t wait for it to happen, and I hate it when
it’s over!” I can’t actually attest to that being the exact quote, but I can
tell you with certainty that Exposure 2015 is here and it’s bigger and
better than ever. Enjoy! «

PHOTOGRAPHY: A Matter of Life and Death
by Wes Lafortune, festival manager
This February,
as we enter
Exposure’s
eleventh year,
it’s important to
note that the art
of photography
is more than
selfies, selfpromotion and
spectacular
scenery.
A quick trip through this guide will tip
conscientious readers off to this fact. Read
these pages and then proceed to Exposure’s
three official openings. On January 31 in
The Bow Valley at the Whyte Museum of
the Canadian Rockies is the exhibition High
Adventure – Byron Harmon on the Columbia
Icefield, 1924. Harmon, who was born on his
family’s homestead in Olympia, Washington,
later became mesmerized by the Canadian
Rockies. Because of this fascination he spent
most of his adult life making dangerous river
crossings and negotiating treacherous
mountain passes to document the majesty he
witnessed with his view camera. Spectacular
life affirming photographic expeditions
buffered by threats of the raw wilderness he
was determined to document.
The Calgary opening takes place on
February 5 at Founders’ Gallery – The Military
Museums. Here we are invited to discover
Burnt Generation; a visual discourse on the
topic of isolation from a group of nine
contemporary Iranian photographers who lead
us through a landscape pockmarked by
violence, extended periods of war and
gruesome acts waged against humanity. This
photography exhibition asks much of itself and
its viewers. Burnt Generation doesn’t feed us
easily digestible narratives but instead
challenges with smart and surprising
photographs using the visual tools of fine art,
4 4
Basketball in the Cemetery
by Larry Louie
documentary and portraiture to shed new
light on what, all too often during the
country’s recent history, has been a dark and
confining place. Iran’s Burnt Generation—
post-Shah 1979 and Iran/Iraq War—have
survived this desperate epoch to create
photographic works of art that urge all of
us to carefully consider the dire consequences
of war.
Finally proceed to Edmonton where you’ll
find the Louie Photography Gallery. This is the
venue of Exposure’s inaugural opening in
Alberta’s capital city on the evening of
February 7. Named after its owner, Larry Louie,
an optometrist cum photographer who opens
up his gallery to show stunning black and
white images of places he’s visited in the
developing world. Poking the eyes of cliché,
Louie celebrates the people he visits in
countries such as Bangladesh. You don’t have
to look far for cues of grinding poverty here:
dirty water, dirty air, wretched housing. But just
beyond the edges of despair lies something
truly beautiful: Life. Children playing in the
streets, family celebrations; daily triumphs that
we all can relate.
For Louie, merely capturing moments of
time in these seemingly exotic places (far from
exposurephotofestival.com
his comfortable Edmonton home) is not
enough. He has joined with a Canadian
charity (SEVA Canada) and, when possible,
they restore the eyesight of those blinded by
cataracts or other correctable issues that
impact eye health.
Upon first consideration it could be
perceived that Louie is the magnanimous one
in this scenario. And perhaps he is. But I
would argue that Louie is the ultimate
beneficiary in this exchange. He is welcomed
into the homes of countless strangers, as if an
old friend, and then encouraged to use his
professional training to restore strangers’
eyesight, all while winning the admiration of
many. Photography gives Louie a framework
to travel around the developing world. He
takes photographs, helps to heal those afflicted
by eye disease and in return they give him
their love: life.
And so this February as you peruse the
more than 60 exhibitions available across
Alberta, consider the photographic artists who
travelled before us, those who call Iran home,
or the villagers and city dwellers across the
globe who struggle to meet the necessities of
life. Photography for them, and for us, really is
a matter of life and death. «

An exhibit inspired by the world around us

the reaction that he hopes to instill in others

HACKETT
What is contemporary in Canadian photography?
As a descriptor for visual art, ‘contemporary’ is often taken to mean
the new. This narrow view obscures a broader consideration of
photographic practice in Canada and its legacies over time. Hackett
will consider the question of contemporaneity in photography from the
1960s to today, touching on a range of artists from Charles Gagnon
and Suzy Lake to Elaine Stocki and Annie MacDonell.
Exposure and Oh, Canada in conjunction with Glenbow and
TD Bank Group are pleased to present Sophie Hackett, Associate
Curator, Photography, Art Gallery of Ontario in discussion on the topic

Perspective Shift
January 20 to February 28
These images were made over a three
year period while visiting architectural
theme parks in Nikko, Japan and Shenzen,
China. The images achieve impossible
focus by layering anywhere between 10 and
20 frames of shallow focus into one sharply
delineated frame.
Robinson’s Camera is excited to present
an exhibition of wilderness images from
the foothills and mountains of BC and
Alberta by Andrew Millar. These images
were captured using lens/camera body
perspective control (tilt-shift); similar to the
view cameras of the 19th and 20th century
used by the photographers that discovered
the West. Andrew created the photographs
displayed in this show using a digital
metal plate process. Please join us for an
informative artist talk on tilt-shift with the
chance to try out perspective control
for yourself.

Metalized Precipitation, Seven Billion
Individual Diamonds of Untenable is the
third in a series of large, multi-projector,
installation works. More than a dozen
diapositive film slides of locations around
Calgary are projected on a large wall,
appearing as a strange but plausible
diorama. As the viewer moves through
the space they modify that image by
blocking some or all of the images
emanating from projectors, both casting
their shadow on the wall and becoming
a new projection surface. The work is,
in part, a response to our complicated
relationship with carbon.

The Juxtaposition of Digital Art by Jeff
Cruz and Patrick Rochon
January 12 to February 28
Space, Place and Time brings together
the diverse work of the Canadian Fine
Art Photographer Kevin J. Mellis. His
work explores the universal elements of
everyday existence and the interaction
between people and locations. This
exhibition features photography in both
Wet Plate Collodion and Large Format
Black & White. You can visit more of his
work: www.kevinjmellis.com
Burnt Generation is an exhibition of
contemporary Iranian photography –
most of which has not previously been
seen in North America. The exhibition
seeks to convey the impact of decades
of political unrest and social upheaval
upon the Iranian people. The exhibition
is a rare opportunity to move to a place
beyond cliché; a moment to forget the
stereotypical images of Iran and enter
the worlds of eight highly original and
intellectually engaged image makers.
Featuring documentary photography,
portraiture and fine art photography,
Burnt Generation has three central
themes: the isolation, loneliness and
desolation of youth; the common threads
that unite the Nation in spite of everything;
and the personal, political and social
consequences of war. Burnt Generation
is curated by Fariba Farshad, Director of
Candlestar, UK.
Endeavor presents a wonderful
juxtaposition of series by two Canadian
artists: First, Calgary-based artist
Jeff cruz: Instant Two. This work, a
continuation of Cruz’s Instant Art series,
explores the connections we make
between two separate images. For the
past three years Cruz has been capturing
instant moments in everyday situations.
When combined in the same frame, these
separate moments can create a unique
experience. And second, Montreal-based
artist Patrick Rochon: Radiant Light. The
series represent not only the expression of
light human bodies emit but the extensive
experience and technique the artist has
acquired throughout the years. “Most of
what shapes reality is unseen. I’ve been
fascinated by what we can’t see. Like
the shape of sounds, energy, vibrations,
feelings, the photons our bodies emits.”

Transition
February 13 to March 31
A transition in seasons leaves the trace
of a relationship that once was, while
creating the promise of what is to come.
The change from summer to winter can
foster a reluctance to readjust, but our
passion allows us to go beyond this. As
subjects of our surroundings, we are
forced to adapt. Those who are ambitious,
awaken new opportunities that lay within
the permanence of a structure. Using time,
light and form, this exhibition explores
movement in relation to the landscape as
it cycles through its course.

scuplture Louise P. Chong. Stelfox works
in traditional photographic palladium
methods that produce stunning delicate
tonal ranges, evoking a sense of memory.
McAtter seeks to create photos that are
universal and touching all at once. Recently
she embarked on a series, documenting
the birthing process, capturing a
multitude emotions ranging from triumph,
strength and love. Seeking to redefine
the perception of adornment, chong,
constructs tableaus on canvas, integrating
found objects and precious materials.
It’s Natural describes this collection
of work covering wildlife, landscapes,
emotions, no-makeup selfies and more.

Allan Harding MacKay is attracted
to transitions that seem to occur with
the clash of weather systems and the
formidable clouds and dramatic skies
that result. This Banff series is based
on the observations and images he
gathered from the viewpoint of his studio
and transformed the digital sources into
the traditional materials of charcoal,
chalk pastel, oil pastel, wax, and oil
on paper. Included are works from his
Nelson sojourn.

Matthew Pillsbury, Tokyo
February 7 to February 21
Local photographer Brent Mykytyshyn
has set out to change the world one
loving image at a time and he’s starting
in the lower level of Paul Kuhn Gallery.
This February, you can be one of the first
to experience the purity of a stranger’s
true love, delicately captured with
methodical expertise in 1850s wet plate
collodion style. Allow yourself to get
caught in the warmth of a loving gaze
more than 100 times.
Following Matthew Pillsbury’s
Guggenheim Fellowship, the Douglas
Udell Gallery debuts the New York-based
photographer’s latest series, TOKYO, for
the first time in Canada.
Virginia Mak - Character Reference

Pushing photography beyond traditional

minimized light values, her work disrupts

figures in literature, folklore and mythology.

Canmore Juxtaposed:
An exhibition of blended photography
February 1 to 28
Why don’t you take another look at the
Leighton Art Centre (LAC)? Let our artist
members show you that the LAC is more
than just its history. Featured photographers
will focus on western themes and rural
landscapes. Enjoy this first ever display of
LAC members’ photography, all while
experiencing our heritage home art gallery,
shop, and museum located on 80 acres of
rolling foothills overlooking the Rocky
Mountains of southern Alberta.
This exhibition, produced by
Canmore historian and photographer
Rob Alexander, presents photographs that
blend historical and modern views of the
same subject. These blended photographs
create a dynamic way to interact with how
Canmore appeared in the past and how it
appears today. The backdrop of each
blended photograph is usually the modern
view with the historical photograph
providing a key element to set the tone
and to allow a viewer’s imagination to tell
the rest of the story.

Tripping the Streets Fantastic.
February 1 to March 29
Calgary photographers Julie Vincent
and Chris Tait continue with the third
instalment of their ongoing five-year
international street photography project.
Continuing their street photography
studies and work they created in London,
England and New York City, the pair bring
a Canadian look at some of the world’s
most renowned street photography
destinations. This year, the duo has
focused their lenses on Mexico City.
The project explores the differences
and similarities of major cities and their
residents around the world through
momentary glimpses through a consistent
lens. The artists explore issues of density,
history and culture foreign to our local
landscape, and consider the interactions,
human to human, and human with
environment, that define culture.

Fleeting Connections is a four-decade
retrospective by photographer, Kathleen
Davies of portraits made during casual
encounters with people during travels in
Canada and abroad. “So often it is the
people we meet and interact with
traveling that define and enrich our
overall experience.” These portraits
therefore reflect that momentary
communion between the photographer
and the subject – often joyful, but at
times reflective, or wary. The exhibition
features Black and White images
produced both from digital files on a K7
carbon ink jet printer, and from traditional
film on gelatin silver paper.

Geoffrey James: Inside Kingston
Penitentiary
February 14 to May 17
Canada’s oldest oldest prison, Kingston
Penitentiary (KP) was home to many of the
country’s most notorious criminals from
1835 to 2013. Through its final months
of operation, artist Geoffrey James paid
multiple visits to the site to develop a
body of photographs documenting and
memorializing this legendary institution.
The resulting images capture the physical
setting, routines and relationships inside
KP. James’ photographs engage with the
carceral environment and its inhabitants,
movingly melding artistic achievement and
documentary force.

The Quiet Rebuild – New Portraits
February 28 to March 1
The inaugural InFocus exhibition
features Edmonton and area
photographers. This open theme group
exhibit showcases the Capital Region’s
local talent, bringing together diverse
techniques, subject matter and creative
voices. The image-makers of InFocus are
passionate about their work and each
possesses a distinct photographic style.
The exhibit is curated by Alexis Marie
Chute, an award-winning Edmonton artist,
photographer and arts advocate.
Ever wonder what a black hole or a
doorway to another world might look like?
Or how to visualize the square root of
minus one? These images have been
manipulated according to the equations
of General Relativity and the mathematics
of imaginary numbers. Combining the
esoteric with the everyday, they aim to
make abstract ideas tangible.
Award-winning photographer Alexis
Marie Chute builds on her series of
provocative images of individuals in their
time of healing following hardship. The
Quiet Rebuild – New Portraits features
never before exhibited photographs in
her noteworthy series, now aptly exhibited
at Harcourt House where the work was
first conceived during Alexis Marie’s
term as Artist-in-Residence in 2012/13.
In The Quiet Rebuild, Alexis Marie
compassionately exposes the private
