PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Peter Magnusson
On January 29th I attended a lunch meeting of the IERHA
Board of Directors in Selkirk. This meeting was to inform
members of the direction that IERHA is taking in the next
four years. The discussions were of a general nature,
specifying what areas they wished to focus on. One area
of focus was resources for seniors. These would include
services like housing, home care, congregate meals and
facilities such as ours. They are looking at ways that seniors can live an independent lifestyle for as long as they
can. They are looking for the best value for the dollars
spent. I presented to them a report on our Centre stating
the valuable activities we have for seniors and spelling out
our fundraising efforts. The funding they give us is for
wages of the office staff. All other expenses we support
ourselves. They definitely are getting the best value for
their dollar by supporting our Centre. The people I talked
to were quite supportive of my presentation. Although
nothing of a concrete commitment for additional funding
was made at this meeting, I felt it was worthwhile. It got
our name and nature of our operation up front and noticed.
This meeting allowed me to network with other Centres
with similar concerns. I was able to talk to a member of
IERHA who is a member of the budgeting process. It was
good to put faces to the names of the people at IERHA.
I feel that it is necessary to clear up the issue of why we
have a harassment policy. Some members have questioned
the need for one. On December 4, 2014 I received a call
from Carmon Barros of Manitoba Work Place Safety and
Health. She told me that they had a complaint from our
office staff that we did not have a harassment policy posted
in our workplace pursuant to Part 10 of Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health, Regulation M.R. 217/2006. She
further advised me that this policy should have been put in
place in 2006. I was instructed to draft a policy for her
review and to post it at the Centre by December 19, 2014,
which I did. Regulation M.R. 217/2006 spells out what is
and is not harassment and what is to be contained in a harassment policy and that it must be posted in the workplace.
I submitted the harassment policy we have today and it
was approved. It applies to the interactions of, employee
and employee, employee and the board, employees and
members, and members and members. This policy not
only states what harassment is, but what procedures you
should take if you feel you have been harassed by anyone
at the Centre.
Your friendly bartender will see you at the Valentine’s
Party on February 14, 2015 at 7:00 p.m.!!
“The worst time to have a heart attack is during
a game of charades”
We meet every Tuesday morning to work on sewing projects of
our own or for charity.
Recently, our group volunteered to help the Days for Girls Team
Winnipeg. (www.daysforgirls.org). Days For Girls is an international organization of volunteers who help girls to have access to
quality sustainable feminine hygiene products. To date 100,000
kits have been distributed free of charge.
Our group agreed that every girl in the world deserves education,
safety and dignity. Not having sanitary supplies means using
leaves, mattress stuffing, newspaper, cornhusks, anything they
can find and still miss up to 2 months of school every year. The
poverty cycle can be broken when girls stay in school.
Our members have been very generous in donating their time,
enthusiasm, fabric and sewing talents.
We volunteered to make 50 kits before the end of March. ( 400
liners and 100 shields and 50 drawstring bags.)
We will be making 50 more kits in the fall
A work party has been scheduled at New Horizons on February 9
at 6:30 p.m.
We accept donations of 100% cotton flannelette for the liners or
100% cotton quilting fabric for the shields and bags.
Please note that due to cultural restrictions we are able to use
fabrics with geometric or floral/botanical prints only.
The kits also contain a bar of soap and washcloth if you have any
to donate..
Please call Alice Newman at 204-642-5508 or Denise Wenzel
204-651-2211 if you want more information.
BUILDING & MAINTENANCE
Everett Lloyd
The Grand Room & the Harmony Room have been
patched, primed and painted.
Everything else is “on going” and in good shape.
The floor washing machine has been checked and seems
to be in good working condition. We are waiting for a better price on the front door before we go ahead with the
change.
Thanks to Bill Delorme for helping with the painting in the
Grand Room and Harmony Room.

KITCHEN NEWS
Sharon Peichl
The Friday Lunch Teams have met to discuss the future of our program. The operation absolutely requires 8 teams to cook and serve a lunch once every
2 months, and including special events like the Curling Tournament and St. Pat's Dinner. Each team of 5
or 6 has a leader or shares the planning duties to
take turns 'leading'. An average of 38 lunches are
served with more at the tournament.
Three of our leaders and a few team members will
RETIRE after this lunch season.
Some team members have 'served' for more than 12
years! And thanks to them for all their time and
effort!! We MUST fill the vacant teams to continue
the program. It's time for some others to step in.
Most of us have prepared a meal for 30, and with
good help in our excellent kitchen it's not that big a
job. Menus can be as simple as soup and sandwich,
or any favorite the team wants to try. Lots of good
help will be willing to help you start up. Call the office
with your offers of help or for info, or call a team
member to join in one Friday to assist a live lunch
preparation. All comments and suggestions are most
welcome!! Please speak up.
Don't forget – all the programs at our Centre are run
by volunteers, and positions must be refilled by new
ones to keep them going.

Perogy Days are here again. The perogy program

642-4785 and she will help get you involved.
Thinking of becoming a volunteer? See a list of reasons that will help you make up your mind.
#10: It's good for you.
Volunteering provides physical and mental rewards. It:
Reduces stress: Experts report that when you focus on someone other than yourself, it interrupts usual
tension-producing patterns.
Makes you healthier: Moods and emotions, like
optimism, joy, and control over one's fate, strengthen
the immune system.
#9: It saves resources.
Volunteering provides valuable community services so
more money can be spent on local improvements. The
estimated value of a volunteer's time is $15.39 per
hour.
#8: Volunteers gain professional experience.
You can test out a career.
#7: It brings people together.
As a volunteer you assist in:
Uniting people from diverse backgrounds to work toward a common goal.
Building camaraderie and teamwork.
#6: It promotes personal growth and self esteem.
Understanding community needs helps foster empathy
and self-efficacy.
#5: Volunteering strengthens your community.
As a volunteer you help:
Support families (daycare and eldercare)
Improve schools (tutoring, literacy)
Support youth (mentoring and after-school programs
Beautify the community (beach and park cleanups)
#4: You learn a lot.
Volunteers learn things like these:
Self: Volunteers discover hidden talents that may
change your view on your self worth.
Government: Through working with local non-profit
agencies, volunteers learn about the functions and operation of our government.
Community: Volunteers gain knowledge of local resources available to solve community needs.
#3: You get a chance to give back.
People like to support community resources that they
use themselves or that benefit people they care about.
#2: Volunteering encourages civic responsibility.
Community service and volunteerism are an investment in our community and the people who live in it.
#1: You make a difference.
Every person counts.

No cards were sent out this month, but I would like to take
this opportunity to pass a long a “Thinking of You” wish
to our own Sunshine Girl Marion Gale. Despite going
through some medical procedures of her own she has still
managed to get out the cards that show our concern for
other members. We hope that Marion is well on her way
to a complete recovery and will continue her good work
at the Centre.

With Four Locations in Winnipeg
It’s like the kid who never said a word for six years.
His parents took him to speech therapists but the kid
never spoke. And then one morning at breakfast, he
looked up from his bowl of cereal and said, “The milk
is sour.” The parents were so happy. They said, “You
talk perfectly. Why did you wait so long?” He said,
“Up until now everything’s been okay.”
Bill Gates died and went to heaven and was
given a little cottage in the woods and next door
was a mansion on a hill with a golf course and
tennis courts, and there lived the captain of the
Titanic. “Why does he deserve better?” Bill asked
God. “Because the Titanic only crashed once.”
A guy goes into a bar, orders four shots of the
most expensive thirty-year-old single-malt
scotch, and downs them one after the other.
The barkeep says, “You look like you’re in a
hurry.”
“You would be too if you had what I have,” says
the guy.
A woman was in bed with her husband’s best friend
when the phone rang. After hanging up, she turned
to her lover and said: “That was Jim, but don’t
worry, he won’t be home for a while. He’s playing
cards with you.”
“What have you got?” asks the bartender.
“You Married?”
“Fifty cents.”
“I am.”
Three engineers were arguing about which is better, mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering. The
mechanical engineer says, “God must’ve been a
mechanical engineer: look at the joints in the human body.” The second says, “No, God must’ve
been an electrical engineer: look at the nervous
system.” And the third says, “God had to be a civil
engineer: who else would’ve run a waste disposal
pipeline right through a great recreational area?”
A traveling salesman stops at the nearest farmhouse
and asks if he can spend the night. The farmer says
okay and tells him he can go upstairs and sleep in the
same room as his daughter. The salesman goes upstairs and, as he enters the daughter’s room, notices
another salesman in bed with her. “Oh, my God!” he
proclaims. “I must be in the wrong joke!”
The doctor was showing the visitor around the insane asylum, and showing him a test to decide
whether people should be admitted as patients. “We
fill a bathtub with water, and we hand the person a
teaspoon, a cup, and a pail. “Oh,” says the visitor,
“so the normal person will use the pail to empty the
tub.” The doctor replied, “No, actually, a normal person would pull the plug. So, would you like a private
room?”
A park ranger is explaining the difference between a
raven and a crow. “A raven has six pinions on each
wing, and a crow has five pinions on each wing. So
really, it’s just a matter of a pinion.”

“Happily?”
“Yes, of course.”
“You and your wife both happy?”
“Sure, Every week we go out to a romantic restaurant, have a candlelight dinner, some wine—
she goes on Fridays, I go on Tuesdays.”
Charles, the son of an ailing rich man, decided he was
going to need a woman to enjoy life with when his dad
died. He went to a singles bar, saw a beautiful
woman, and walked up to her and said, “I’m just an
ordinary man, but in a week or two my father will die
and I’ll inherit twenty million dollars.”
The woman went home with Charles, and the next
day she became his stepmother.
A guy was driving down the road and ran over a
rooster, and he felt guilty, so he stopped and went up
to the farmhouse and said to the farmer, “I’d like to
replace your rooster,” and the farmer said, “Okay.
The chickens are out back.”
A ninety-year-old man went to his doctor and said,
“Doctor, my wife, who is eighteen, is expecting a
baby.”
The doctor said, “Let me tell you a story. A man
went hunting, but instead of his gun, he picked up
an umbrella by mistake. And when a bear suddenly
charged at him, he pointed his umbrella at the bear,
shot at it, and killed it on the spot.”
“Impossible. Somebody else must have shot that
bear.”
“Exactly my point.”

Here's a little story I'd like to share with everyone
about one of our members. His name is Everett
Lloyd, he is a member of the board under the name
of Maintenance since 2003/04, this is a volunteer
position.
On Saturday January 17th he painted the harmony
room with the help of Bill Delorme also a member,
and again on January 24th he painted the main hall
again with Bill's help.
To further add to my story Everett comes in every
morning to check the heat, lights, water and everything in between.
Let's show this man our appreciation for all he does
as well as all the other volunteers that make this
centre run efficiently.

FRIDAY FLOOR CURLING
Fred & Vera Ralke
We managed to mostly get through the Cold and Flu
outbreak recently. Numbers for one of the Friday floor
curling days were down as a result of a particularly
bad strain of cold going around. Pandemonium ensued when Fred posted a note telling people not to
hold hands, hug or kiss during floor curling, of course
everyone in the near vicinity jumped on the chance to
misinterpret the note. Doreen Braun led the group
hugs with Anni Hahlweg commenting that “we don’t
need much encouragement around here”, way to go
girls! No cold bug is going to stop us from having fun!

Thursday Curling got underway January 8th with a
bit of a shaky start! But I think everything is going
well now. We have a good turnout, but more curlers
are always welcome. The more the merrier! So if
you just want to practice, learn how to use a stick,
try skipping, playing third, second or lead, come on
out! It just costs $1.00 per week.

On behalf of the ballroom dance instructors, we
would like to thank the front office staff, Jonie and

There has been a lot of work required to start up our
dance program at the 55+club. Both Jonie and Chris
have been a valuable resource. They have been
friendly, approachable, patient and helpful. Both
have helped with the designing of posters, typing
registration lists, suggesting ideas, helping us to find
missing cords and stereos, answering questions, inserting this column into the highlights and all the
other details that make dance happen every Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. during the winter months. Thank
you Jonie and Chris!

Currently we have 586 members, 130 of whom are
new to the Centre this year.
We are definitely heading for a record year in both
total quantity of members and also for the quantity of
new members joining the Centre.
What’s drawing the crowds?, New programs probably, and a general desire for recent retirees to stay
active and involved.
In our effort to keep the larger membership please
don’t be shy to let us know if there is a program that
you would like to see happen at the Centre. Better
than that, if you have a particular skill you would like
to pass on to others, consider leading a program at
the Centre.

PLEASE JOIN US
WEDNESDAYS FEBRUARY MARCH APRIL 2015
EVERY WEEK IN HARMONY ROOM
55+ NEW HORIZONS CLUB, GIMLI, MB
Time: 4:00pm – 5:00PM
We do traditional dances from around the world
(Greece, Israel, France, North and South America,
etc.) along with newly choreographed dances to a
variety of world music. Beginners are always welcome. The dances are always simple, and each
one will be taught first, so no experience is needed.
You won't need a partner because everyone in the
circle is your partner. Dancing in a circle is one of
the oldest ways in which people celebrate community and togetherness. We have done a dance or
two at Winnipeg Beach celebrations to great success. Cost is $1 to New Horizons members and $6
to non-member.
Linda Rankin has taught Circle Dance for over 25
years and sculpts the class according to participants
skills and abilities.
