“OUR BILLY ”
W illiam M .Bernat
OCTOBER 6, 1954 - JANUARY 29, 1997
I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one.
I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles
when day is done.
I’d like to leave an echo whispering
softly down the ways.
Of happy times and laughing times
and bright and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve:
to dry before the sun.
Of happy memories that I leave behind
when day is done.

Fair
from page 1
“The Fonda fair is a not-forprofit organization,” he said. “It
is up to everyone in this room to
make sure it continues for another 175 years. If we continue to
look at the fair as a source of revenue for ourselves, it is not going
to last. It is just that simple.”
The annual meeting took place
in the Fonda-Fultonville High
School cafeteria, in which two to
three dozen members came out to
hear the status of the fair.
Kennedy said the society has

In loving memory of Katherine T.
Smith who passed away
January 29, 1999.
The years I shared with you,
The happy times I knew,
Are most treasured memories,
With loving thoughts of you,
For you were someone special,
So gentle, kind and true,
You will never be forgotten,
For I thought the world of you.
If I could have one lifetime wish,
One dream that could come true,
I would pray to God with all my
heart for yesterday and for you.

Daughter Kathy
downsized its staff significantly
throughout the years to decrease
its payroll and budget. However,
the wages and salaries portion of
the budget nearly doubled in 2014
due to an increase in staff. He said
the department is made up of a
core group of employees who
have taken salary cuts as well. He
said, as president, he receives an
$800 stipend. Even without significant pay, Kennedy said, society folks continue to plan and pull
off the event each year.
He said members outside of the
board can do more to help.
Kennedy said members can fix
up exhibits during the summer.
Additionally, superintendents can
encourage new exhibitors.
He said attendees have complained in the past that the fair
does not contribute new activities
or vendors for their entertainment.
Kennedy said the society tries to
do this, but could encourage more
people to do so. He welcomed
members to bring new ideas to the
forefront for this year’s fair.
He said Adkins will perform
Sept. 5, during what he dubbed
the “Mohawk Valley Music
Festival.” Kennedy said the festival will run in conjunction with
the fair, at the fairgrounds. Four
groups will perform during the
event, including Adkins. The performances will be followed by an
after-party, in which, local musical group Skeeter Creek will play
at the fair’s entertainment center.
Kennedy wants to bring in more
“Nashville acts” for the festival,
and already has some leads.
Ossenfort from page 1
the project suddenly dissolves.
Fourth Ward Alderwoman
Diane Hatzenbuhler said the city
is burdened by a $15 million
deficit and should not take out
any more bond anticipation notes.
At the end of the meeting, the
Common Council decided to
read through the agreement
before approving it.
If necessary, Ossenfort said the
county’s Department of Economic
Development and Planning will
step in and provide financial assistance, through a community
development fund, for the water
and sewer lines. However, he
urged city officials to put an end to
their “ongoing disagreements”
and help move this project forward in a timely manner.
“The future of our entire county will no doubt be brighter if
you do,” the letter states.
Ossenfort said the $30 million
project is the largest private sector investment and job creating
initiative the city has seen in
years. His letter not only stated
the economic benefits of the project, but notes the significant
impact senior housing will have
on many families in urgent need
of such a facility. He said city
officials are representatives of
Montgomery County, and their
actions could create hurdles for
future development projects here.
Barone said he did not read the
letter, but defended his actions
regardless. He said he needs particulars before agreeing to the
payment plan.
He said the developer could
potentially decide to drop out of
the project, and leave the city to
recuperate the funds.
He noted this has happened in
the past with other major projects.
“There were several unanswered questions,” Barone said.
“It is plain and simple. Just tell
me what it is about and let’s go
from there. Anyone looking for
resources should be there to
explain it and why.”
Thane, like Ossenfort, said she
is disappointed in the Common
Council for its actions at the
Committee of the Whole meeting.
She said the Concordia project
was identified as a “priority project” by the Mohawk Valley
Regional Economic Council, and
she did not anticipate any slowdown on its moving forward.
“I was blindsided by their reaction,” Thane said.
She said city officials should
treat developers with respect and
professionalism, if they intend to
see future deals.
Thane said she is waiting for
the Common Council to read
through the agreement. In the
meantime, she said county officials have offered a loan to get
the ball rolling on the infrastructure improvement project.
“So we will see what happens,”
Thane said. “Today, we still have
someone that is being very public
with not being willing to bond. I
don’t get it. This bonding for this
project will not impact the operations budget so don’t understand
the council’s rhetoric.”
