he 2015 Calendar of Events has been
finalized and is enclosed for your
information. Be sure to save the dates
for many of the special activities, beginning
with the Valentines Dinner Dance on Saturday,
February 14th. Please read the Rear
Commodore’s article for more information.
Again this year, we are pleased to have Mark
Letchworth surprise us with his culinary skills with
special dinners and wine parings. MYC now has an
ABC license that allows members to purchase wine
and beer to take home. Due
to the popularity of these
dinners, they will be limited
to only active members with
no more than 4 reservations
per member.
The New Year’s Eve
event was an outstanding
success with a capacity
crowd. It was the first time
we were able to use the
newly renovated deck,
which offers lots of
opportunities to expand the
use of our clubhouse. MYC
has a beautiful setting on
Stutts Creek, and the deck
provides an enjoyable place to dine on good food
and relax with friends. Bring a guest and show them
around; they might decide to join our Club. Only a
member can sponsor a new member, so look for
opportunities to recruit new applicants. We are the
best deal in town.
We are all saddened by the passing of our board
member, Ted Williams. He served as Fleet Surgeon,
and before becoming ill, he agreed to continue with
additional responsibilities. He was a wonderful
person with lots of enthusiasm; we will miss his
smiling face.
We open our doors for the first time on Thursday,
February 5, at 5 p.m. with the Officers and Board of
Directors Installation Ceremony. We welcome five
new board members: Dan Reno as Rear
Commodore, Henry Moncure as Treasurer, David
Johnson as Fleet Surgeon, and Joe Arnold and Pete
Jennette as Directors. The evening begins with light
hors d’oeuvres and an open bar until 6:00, followed
by the usual Mom’s Home
Cooking dinner. Be sure to
make reservations if you plan
to stay for dinner. The
uniform is MYC winter formal
for Board members. Look for
an eMinder with details.
Be sure to get your annual
dues in on time. They are
due by February 1st in order
to avoid a 10% late fee.
Also, when writing your
check, this is a good time to
add a little extra for our
Scholarship Fund. Due to
our tax status, contributions
are not tax deductible.
I begin another year as Commodore, and it is my
privilege to continue to be of service to the MYC and
its members. Thank you for your vote of confidence
and I, along with the entire Board, look forward to
serving you. Your input, suggestions, or concerns
should always be shared with the Board. You elected
an excellent board of directors to represent you, and
we take that responsibility seriously.

IN
MEMORIAM
adly we report the passing of our friend
and fellow member, Ted Williams.
Ralph E. “Ted” Williams, died at home January
1, 2015, surrounded by his wife, Karen, and other
family members.
A member since 2005, Ted was deeply involved
in club business and activities and he will be missed.
We all extend our heartfelt condolences to Karen
and the entire Williams family.

MANTEL
OF THE MONTH
ooking forward to the coming Spring, this
month’s mantel is the collaborative
craftiness of Susan Hill, Sheran Hodges,
and Nancy Twigg.
So when you see the ladies around the club
this month, be sure to give
them a big thank you for
their artistic efforts.

elcome to all. I hope that you
are anxious to get back to MYC
activities and want to know what
the club has to offer in 2015. I am your
new Rear Commodore and it is my job
to let you know what we have planned.
I look forward to meeting you at the
Officers Installation Reception,
February 5th, see you then.
he Roof Over The Deck Project
along with substantial upgrades
to the electrical system was
completed in time for the Mathews
Yacht Club New Years Eve party.
Everyone who attended had a great
time. I have had numerous
compliments about the contractor’s fine
job.
wo members from the Waiting
List have recently accepted offers
to activate their membership and
become full active members.
“Love is in the Air,” and on Saturday,
February 14th we want you to celebrate
with us at our very special Valentine’s Day
Dinner Dance. That evening we will have
live music provided by Out On A Limb, the
group that entertained us on the 65th MYC
Anniversary last August.
Since then, numerous requests to have
them back have been made from members
who love to dance as well as those who
like to sit back and listen and maybe tap
their feet to the beat. We are very glad
they will be here that evening.
Because Valentine’s Day actually falls
on Saturday this year it looks like the
planets are all in alignment for a bigger and
better celebration than ever before. The
festivities will begin with your arrival at
5:30p.m. for dinner and the entertainers will
begin their magic at 7:00p.m.
Mark is planning the dinner and as we
all know he is an excellent Club Manager
and Executive Chef and has a wonderful
staff that always works hard to please, so
expect something delicious as always.
Good food, good music, good friends,
and someone you love- I believe these are
all the ingredients for a wonderful and
romantic evening. So, I suggest that you
mark your calendar immediately and make
your reservation in advance so that you
don’t miss out on the fun. See you there.
The Club is closed during the month of
January. The facility gets a deep cleaning
throughout including the galley and all food
serving and preparing equipment. Any
needed repairs are made. The Board of
Director members are busy planning the
schedule for 2015 and each member of the
board is getting geared up for their area of
responsibility.
Save the date. The Mathews Yacht Club
Annual Work Day is scheduled for April 18,
2015. This is a major event where club
volunteers muster at the Club to clean the
yard, spread mulch, prune shrubs, paint
etc. then have lunch prepared by Mark and
his staff provided by the club. This is
always an enjoyable event and provides
club members and members in waiting an
opportunity to do some work, get dirty and
meet other members.
I had the privilege of getting to know Ted
Williams during the time he served on the
Mathews Yacht Club Board of Directors.
He tackled any job the Board sent his way
with a sense of urgency and with
enthusiasm. It did not make any difference
whether the task at hand was renting liquor
lockers, organizing a paint crew or
replacing chain link fencing around the
pool. Ted had a real talent for organizing
the job, making it enjoyable and in the end
providing a quality product. We will all miss
Ted as a fellow Board Member and as a
friend. Our thoughts and prayers go out to
Karen and Ted’s family.

FLEET SURGEON
David N. Johnson
AS WE BEGIN A NEW YEAR, I am looking forward to serving as Fleet Surgeon.
In that capacity, I would like to remind everyone about food safety.
We work hard to comply with the Virginia Department of Health’s high standards.
Whenever we have a buffet-style event, put out hors d’oeuvres, and desserts, PLEASE
make sure you’ve washed or sanitized your hands and use only the Club’s serving utensils
to transfer food.
Use the spoons provided when helping yourself to nuts and trail mix at the bar.
Unsanitary habits include using fingers to pickup morsels, “double-dipping” into a dip, or
using your fork to taste test an item. The VDH regulations require using a clean plate for
seconds.
All of us understand and appreciate the need to promote good cleanliness practices.

George Cummings - 2011
Richard Cobb – 2013
John Digges - 2009
John Kalinowski - 2014
Robert Leitzel - 2005
In 2014, we received 23 applications. The
Waiting List at year-end had 43 approved
member/applicants.
As you send in your 2015 dues, please look
over the membership information on the
Remittance Slip carefully and make any
corrections. This feeds into the database
that is used to print the member handbook
each year. Remember to return the
Remittance Slip with your check by the end
of January.
Please keep the Secretary informed of any
address, phone or e-mail address changes
