Nursing Admissions Requirements Fall 2015

Admission Criteria and Points Scale
Class of Fall 2015
The minimum requirements below must be completed by February 2, 2015 to be considered for the
Fall 2015 Nursing class. Once the application deadline has passed, all qualified applicants will progress to
Phase II.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR PHASE I:
1. Complete an application online at www.haywood.edu. Under Quick Links click on Apply Online.
Applications will be accepted from October 1, 2014 through February 2, 2015. List A45110 (Nursing)
as your program of study.
2. Submit an official high school or GED transcript to the Enrollment Management Office located in the
1500 Building. For more information, call 828.627.4500.
3. Complete the placement tests, Accuplacer, biology, and chemistry tests, in the 1500 Building. For an
appointment, call 828.627.4607. SAT scores, ACT scores, or college courses may substitute.
4. Any developmental courses (DRE 096, DRE 097, DRE 098, DMA 010, DMA 020, DMA 030, DMA 040,
DMA 050 and BIO 094) a student places into must be completed with a grade of “DP” (Developmental
Pass). Students who placed out of some or all developmental courses may have already satisfied this
requirement. The need for these courses is determined by the student's results on the Accuplacer
exam, biology placement exam, and the chemistry placement exam. Students will need to
complete these exams as part of the admission process.
5. Evidence of a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater on a four point scale. The most recent transcript
with the most coursework will be used for students who have attended more than one college.
6. Provide documentation of successful completion of a NC approved Certified Nurse Aide I program
which includes theory, lab, and clinical components. (A copy of a college transcript or a notarized
course completion certificate will be acceptable documentation.) Challenging the Nurse Aide I
examination will not meet this requirement. Call Sandy Fischer at 828.565.4145 for more

7. Hold a documented, current, unrestricted credential as Nurse Aide I (NAI) from the North Carolina
Nurse Aide Registry https://www.ncnar.org/index1.jsp and the Division of Health Service Regulation.
(A copy of current listing on the NC DHSR Nurse Aide Registry Website by January 31, 2015 will be
acceptable documentation.)
8. Completion of BIO 168 Anatomy and Physiology I with a grade of “C” or better. Note: BIO 168 has a
prerequisite of BIO 094.

REQUIREMENTS FOR PHASE II:
The total point score is comprised of the following:
1. Score from the HESI Assessment Exam – Students may earn a score between 1 and 100. Students will
receive the same number of points that he/she scores on the HESI. For example, a student who scores
a 90 on the HESI will receive 90 points.
Students will complete the HESI Admission Assessment Exam (mathematics, reading, grammar, critical
thinking, and learning styles) during late February and early March. The HESI Admission Assessment
Exam will be administered only to students who have met all the requirements of Phase I. The HESI
exam may be taken a maximum of two times, but only once per admission cycle. The HESI score from
the current admission cycle will be used. A study guide for the HESI, Admission Assessment Exam Review,
is available in the HCC Bookstore.
2. Points for grade point average (cumulative GPA):
The most recent transcript with the most coursework will be used for students who have attended more than one college.
3.00-3.50 = 8 Points
3.51-3.99 = 14 points
4.00 = 16 points
3. Points for other training:
Points will only be awarded for the highest coursework or degree completed.
Health Occupations I or Allied Health Science I = 1 point
Health Occupations II or Allied Health Science II = 2 points
Diploma level degree = 2 points
Associate level degree = 4 points
Bachelor level degree = 5 points
Masters level degree or higher = 6 points
Provisional acceptance to the Nursing program will be offered to the top 38 point earners from Phase II at
each campus (Haywood and Tri-County).
PROVISIONALLY ACCEPTED STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING BY MAY 15, 2015 TO BECOME FULLY
ACCEPTED INTO THE NURSING PROGRAM:
If these requirements are not completed by May 15, 2015, the student’s slot may be offered to an alternate student.



Complete state health and immunization forms (provided in acceptance packet)
Successful completion of CHM 090 – Chemistry Concepts (with a grade of “DP” Developmental Pass,
or place out on the chemistry placement test)
Successful completion of BIO 169 – Anatomy & Physiology II with a grade of “C”
Students are encouraged to complete the following courses that are required for graduation prior to being
accepted into the nursing program: ENG 111, ENG 112, PSY 150, PSY 241, BIO 175, MAT 143, and a
Humanities/Fine Arts course.
