The Pascal Voice Anne Arundel County Get Organized, Declutter and Right Size Your Life Goal-Setting to get Decluttering from the “Wishing” phase to the “Doing” stage will be the focus of the Pascal Senior Activity Center’s Declutter Support Group at their February meeting. The Declutter Support Group meets at the Center from 9:30 to 11:30 on the first Monday of every month. The group shares personal challenges, strategies and successes related to clutter and organizing. The meetings are facilitated by a member of NAPO (National Association of Professional Organizers). Call 410-222-4464. NARFE Service Center A trained volunteer from the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) is available each Monday morning (by appointment) to discuss benefits. MAP Maryland Access Point Information Specialist, Alagra Bass, from the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities, is available at the Center to assist seniors with defining needs and locating and filing for appropriate services and programs (by appointment). Senior Center Plus The Senior Center Plus program operates at the Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays to provide specialized activities for frail older adults. Participants receive staff support to help them participate independently at the Center. For information call 410-222-4464. Dept. of Aging & Disabilities Transportation provides rides for seniors 55 and over to senior centers, nutrition sites, and medical appointments. Advance notification is required. Call 410-222-4826 to schedule this service. Shopping The Center offers trips to local shopping centers every Tuesday departing at 11:15 and returning at 1:45. A schedule of shopping destinations is available in the office. Van riders are Page 2 asked to adhere to departure and pick-up times. Van riders must sign-up in the office one-week in advance and pay a $2 commitment fee. (Exact change only!) Those who cancel will not get their $2 returned. Forfeited fees are donated to the transportation program. Other van trips are handled through the Center’s Trip Desk. Transportation donations are accepted on the vans and at the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities, which is located at the Heritage Office Complex, Suite 400, 2666 Riva Road, Annapolis, Md. 21401. Monies collected are used to help fund the transportation program so please give generously. Mini-Massage Thursday, February 12, 10:00- noon, massages of the head, back or neck are offered free of charge by certified massage therapist Bonnie Pavlak. Free Hearing Screening Friday, February 13, Stephen Pallett, audiologist, will screen for hearing problems and adjust hearing aids (by appointment). Anne Arundel County Police Liaison Anne Arundel County Police will respond to seniors’ inquiries about safety concerns, community complaints, scams and other law enforcement issues. Contact Corporal Jimmy Miller at 410-222-0080. Lunch Program Meals are served at the Center Monday– Friday at 11:30. Reservations need to be made one-week in advance. Cancellations should be made as soon as possible. Each meal costs the county $4.10. Participants are asked to give what they can toward the cost of the meal. Participants are asked to check in no later than 11:15. Birthdays are celebrated on the third Wednesday of each month. Notary Services This service is available on Mondays from 8:30-11:30 and Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11:30-3:00. The Pascal Voice Public Use PC’s Two computers are available for use during normal Center hours. Please limit your use if someone is waiting. Classes are offered if instruction is needed. Check in at the office to receive a schedule and to register. Bridge A social bridge group meets each Monday from noon-3:00. New members welcome. Bunco is a parlor game which uses dice and is played in rounds. The Center has three groups. Leave your name in the office and we will check to see if any of the groups has openings or needs subs. Mexican Train is a domino game with many players. Join them at 12:30 on Mondays. Hand and Foot Canasta is played each Thursday from 12:30-3:00. A set of rules is available in the office. Beyond Loss Support Group meets on Wednesdays at 11:30. Members meet to exchange information, ideas and provide support to one another. Call for information about joining. Congressman Sarbanes Consultations for constituents of the 3rd Congressional District are available on Thursday, February 5 from 11:00-noon. De-clutter Support Group Center members can share their successes and gain support for the challenge of de-cluttering at 9:30 on Monday, February 2. Register in the office. Wii Open Bowling is available on Tuesday afternoons starting at 12:30 except on the third Tuesday, when play will begin at 1:00. Fitness Room Orientation Fitness Instructor Louise Mulvey will provide a one-hour informational session about how to exercise safely, demonstrate equipment use and answer questions. The group size is limited to six. The February orientation will occur on Tuesday, the 10th from 9:30-10:30. Register in the office. Bachelor Buttons Center member, Mary Stepke, is willing to perform light mending, hemming and clothing repairs. She usually attends the Center on Mondays and Tuesdays. You can speak with her directly or register in the office. Double Deck Pinochle is played with two decks of cards and can be played with more than four players. There is a group that plays each Friday at 12:30. New players are welcome. A set of rules is available in the office. MahJong This popular tile game that originated in China will be played on Friday from 11:00-12:30. Beginners welcome. Knitting and Crochet Karen Shoemaker will provide guidance with knitting projects every Monday at 10:00. Christine Barth will help with crochet, plastic canvas, and cross stitch patterns also on Monday mornings. Black History Month Program: Anne Arundel Community College adjunct faculty member, Nat Martin, will introduce his course Jazz and The Harlem Renaissance at 12:30 on Thursday, February 12. Nat plans to teach a full-length course on Wednesday afternoons during the Spring term. This introductory program will provide an overview of the trends and styles that helped shape the “Harlem Renaissance” and highlight the reasons why this musical and artistic period in our American History continues to stimulate and inspire discussion after more than half a century. The Pascal Voice Spring 2015 College Course Registration Begins Wednesday, February 18 Registration for the Spring Cycle of Anne Arundel Community College’s Senior Program non-credit classes begins on Wednesday, February 18. Most classes will start the week of April 6. A wide variety of fitness, art, computer, and other enrichment courses will be offered. Check on-line or in the office for a complete listing. New! Introduction Jazz and the Harlem Renaissance will be offered by instructor Nat Martin 1:00 on Wednesdays. A preview will be offered this month at 1:00 on the 12th (see preceding page.) All classes require a $80 administrative fee payable to AACC by check or major credit card. Those under age 60 pay an additional $40 per course. Some classes may have a supply fee.
